Since I download ISOs of Mandrake, burn 'em and install them, I can just call up RedHat and see if they will give me $10 for each set of RedHat 7.3 ISOs I download instead. Nothing better than watching a price war over a free operating system.
Ach. Damn blind Mac people. Font rendering under OS X is too damn blurry!
I think it looks great under Mac OS X. Not blurry at all -- I am eagle-eyed. But I will QNX RtP to see the difference. I admit to be being a Mac Zealot.
I disagree. KOffis seems to (currently) be lacking too many useful features. IMO, it's the opposite of most open source office suites; it looks great on the outside, but some work has to be done under the hood
Hey, I am a Mac guy! So appearance is so much more important than performance!:)
Just checking but make sure that your running the latest XFree86 (4.2) and have antialiasing turned on (in the control panel).
Thanks for the tip. I tried that with very little improvement if any at all compared to my Mac OS X box. Font rendering is just plain beautiful under Quartz.
I just downloaded RedHat 7.3 (just 3 CDs) which includes KDE 3.0 and installed it on an IBM ThinkPad to play around with it to see where the Linux Desktop is at. I am a dedicated Mac OS X desktop user and use Linux as a server OS. But am always curious how well Linux is doing for the desktop user and how much of the Mac OS X user experience is going to leak into Linux (like KDE's icon magnification in the panel).
KDE 3.0 is getting really close to something I would give Mom to use (she has Mac OS X right now) but it is still not there. It still has some bugs and useability problems like the clipboard. The KDE office suite is...well...sweet! I am truly impressed by that part. I am wishing that KDE/KOffice gets ported to XDarwin (We have Gnome -- Yuck!). Would give M$ Office v.X a run for its money in the home and educational market where Apple thrives.
My only huge complaint about KDE (And GNOME) is how freaking ugly the font rendering is. I guess I am spoiled with Apple. However, if they can get the font rendering from Nautilus (ex-Apple folks) into KDE, you got a real winner there once you run the desktop environment through a usability and consistency review.
Case in point: how come Chomsky hasn't been invited to present his views about the 9/11 events on television?
Uh, because he is a stupid, fucking anti-semitic asshole that hates Western Culture and America with a passion because no one gives a shit about his narrow minded, hate based dialogue. If it were not for the US liberal colleges, the man wouldn't know how to earn a living or even feed himself. Chompsky is up there with the David Dukes and Louis Farahkans in our society. Nothing more than a hateful racist with a small following of whacked out, bigoted idiots.
That is why, when you purchase another company, you enter a phase call "Due Diligence" so you can find out what kind of scumbags/angels you are buying. So, yes it is entirely Microsoft's fault for not researching the company they were buying.
Remember that the DVD player isn't technically free - you pay for it when you buy your Mac.
Its free to me. When throw money at a new Mac, I consider it a hardware purchase where Apple throws in the OS and additional software as a freebie. We can quarrel about this mindset but it would be a silly debate. Macs are a complete package for the most part.
Why pay for it if you already have a set top DVD player like my Mac friend? He never ever uses his Mac for playing DVDs, because he prefers the living room.
Because I am a mover and shaker and watch movies on airplanes. Plus the chicks in first class think you are hot stuff when you whip out your 15.2 inch widescreen G4 to watch a movie.
Note: If you are single, when flying, always keep a chick flick with you just in case.
iDVD is the DVD production software for Macs, not the viewer. I assume you are talking about the viewer. My answer? I have never noticed nor have I been bothered by interlacing on my movies. Check out MacFixIt, they always have great answers for unique problems.
Tell you what.... why don't you use Linux, a free and open OS, then pay for a commercial DVD player for Linux?
How about I pay for the OS and get the DVD player for free? Best part, I don't have to download a darn thing, its built into the operating system.
Otherwise, will you please stop with your Apple can do no wrong mantra? Please? All platforms have their faults, to pretend that OS X is more UNIX than Linux is just, well, so utterly pointless it's untrue. Who cares?
Bite your tongue Linux boy! How can I be an Apple Zealot if I don't feel they can do no wrong? Mac OS X is more UNIX than Linux, period. UNIX is a trademark owned by the Open Group. Apple has permission to use the UNIX trademark from the Open Group because its operating system meets the Single UNIX Spec., Linux does not.
Disclaimer: I use Linux for what its best suited for...serving.
I'd disagree we have an i-cube and it need the swap memory allocation tweaking in order to play a DVD all the way through
Uh. well, DUH! Apple's minimum RAM spec for Mac OS X is 128MB. So you are getting disapointing performance because you have half the RAM that the Operating System requires. What do you expect?
so tweaking needed yes....
Well if you want to use the system against the recomendation of Apple, I guess you would need tweaking.
but like every system it isn't perfect...
Well in your case, you are not even close to using Mac OS X as it is advertised. So how can this be a real complaint on your part? Its like driving a car with only half the tires on and bitching that it won't go fast.
Then stop using a UNIX-like OS and start using a real UNIX OS like...uh...I don't know...like...Mac OS X. There is nothing like the real thing baby!
Seriously, if you want to watch DVDs on a computer that doesn't run Windows, Mac OS X 's built in DVD player stomps on any thing available for Linux. The best part, it just works. No configuration files to modify, no compilation settings to tweak, etc. Just pop in the DVD and watch the movie.
But then again, isn't tweaking settings more entertaining than watching a movie?
What is to stop Kazaa and Brilliant Digital from using their software to scan the music & movie files on your hard drive, develop a signature and transfer that back to the RIAA and MPAA? Could Kazaa be a trojan horse company set up by music companies to spy on the p2p habits of music lovers? If they now claim that using the bathroom during a commercial break is a technical violation of the copyright laws, this doesn't seem to far fetched.
I would love to see a legislative body pass a law that prevents them from telling the citizens how they should act and behave. Oh, wait. That has happened. But it has been so long ago I think most US politicians have forgotten what that law was. Just to remind them, its called "THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES".
Sometimes, I wish all legislators would do is screw interns. We would be much safer as a country that way.
So the "problem" was presented as evidence of wrong doing, so they went ahead and fixed it. Is this similar to tampering with evidence?
No, this is not evidence tampering. The version of Windows used to present this "bug/feature" is still intact. What Microsoft has done is released a patch to fix this "bug/feature" for the general public. The copy of Windows submitted into evidence is still in the same state as it was upon being submitted.
However, fixing this problem does make Microsoft look more guilty (if that is possible).
Lawsuit is a good idea. I wish I could but I can't get my corporate council interested in going after a SPAMMER when he has bigger fish to fry for the company. However, I still think breaking kneecaps would be more satifying than legal action.
I've been blocking flowgo and euniverse for over a year. These people are totally slimy, and they haven't figured that mail bounces. These people give the human race a bad name.
Hey, how dare you even compare a Flowgo employee to a human being! Its an insult to human beings. I agree, these people are slimy. The only way they will be stopped is by the law or an (un)fortunate act of God. If several of us are bouncing their e-mails for 5 months+, they just don't give a damn. It obviously doesn't hurt them financially to send out e-mails that bounce. I assume they are reporting only what they send out to clients, not what is received. That might be an avenue to attack Flowgo. Like Capone being busted for tax evasion, you might to have to hit Flowgo with something outside their normal crime. Since a lot of their e-mails are being bounced and they don't care that they are being bounced, it would be a decepetive trade practice for them to sell to clients the ability to e-mail a certain number of Internet Users knowing full well they can never reach their target audience because of SMTP blocks and RBLs.
Just a thought, I still like the idea of breaking knees to solve a problem like this. Its just more up close and personal. Tony Soprano, where are you when I need ya, baby?
Flowgo has been a burr in my britches for quite a while. It appears that everyone of my e-mail users gets "newsletters" from Flowgo. About 30% admit to visiting the Flowgo site but swear up and down that they did not request the newsletter. At first, I tried to be nice and contact Flowgo and ask for them to remove my employee from their newsletters (its easier than trying to instruct them to do it). Got back no response. At first I was shocked that Flowgo would not remove them. So after giving them a week, I went into my Postfix configuration and blocked off any e-mail from Flowgo. That was 5 months ago. Still today, I bounce 50 to 100 messages from Flowgo from my mail server. I noticed that several blackhole lists are doing the same now.
There has to be a solution to this sort of problem. About the only way I could get Flowgo to stop SPAMMING my mail server is to call up a buddy of Tony Soprano to break their knees because Flowgo doesn't care and I have never, ever, ever been able to get one of my elected officials or law enforcement agency to pay any interest in Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail. Its not like Flowgo is hiding its behavior either. It should be easy to get them but no one that matters or has the power, gives a damn about this huge waste of bandwidth.
Come on! Only a lame farker would think Strong Bad was funny.
Sticking it to Gates! Apple and AOL

Apple Drops Mac OS 9
·
· Score: 4, Insightful
From the session notes: iChat: AIM-compatible messaging built in to Jaguar. Can create buddy list of anyone on the local network, as well. You can use your Mac.com name and don't need AOL account. Sorting. "First time AOL has let anyone under the tent," said Jobs (although others have reversed-engineered AIM compatible chat apps).
I think this is a huge announcement from Apple. With AOL taking Netscape/Mozilla and using it as its Web App replacing IE, we saw the first shot across the Microsoft bow by Case. Now Jobs and Case are teaming up to make AOL IM a bundled part of Mac OS X. Taking Microsoft's game and shoving it right back them. I assume this is why MSN has finally started supporting Mac OS with their service. They are reading the writing on the wall.
We have been seeing Apple getting more aggressive in dealing with Microsoft. Jobs balked at the Microsoft/DOJ "Give the Kiddies Windows" settlement, Apple's website now shows you that Mac OS X kicks XP's butt, the famous Photoshop "bakeoffs" and now the AOL IM in Jaguar. What next?
That's only if you believe that attending Star Wars makes someone less likely to get the flu. Otherwise, they'll take time off for each
Businesses already plan for employees to be absent a certain number of days. Doesn't matter if they go see a movie or get the flu. The time has already been accounted for.
Since I download ISOs of Mandrake, burn 'em and install them, I can just call up RedHat and see if they will give me $10 for each set of RedHat 7.3 ISOs I download instead. Nothing better than watching a price war over a free operating system.
Notorious Superstars are usually referred to by one name, i.e., Cher, Madonna & Liberace.
Notorious Uber Geeks are usually referred to by their initials by other wannabe geeks, i.e., RMS, ESR & DNA.

Slashdot. Pot. Kettle. Black. Rinse. Repeat.

I think its important question regarding the image of open source activists and corporations.
