You could find a different place to work, I guess. :) Not ideal, but it may solve the problem you're describing.

I agree with you, my friend - America definitely could use more nuclear power plants in place of fossil fuel plants. I think I remember reading that the average nuclear power plant produces something like 9 cubic yards of waste per year (picture a 3-yd by 3-yd by 3-yd block). Not much compared to the average amount of trash generated by a single household in a year!

Unfortunately, most of the American public can't be bothered to look past what happened at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. These two incidents have ruined the reputation of nuclear power - which is too bad, really. I spent several years working with the nuclear-powered ships of the US Navy, and those ships are a testament to the tremendous advantage of safely-managed nuclear power.

I, for one, hope that Americans realize the advantage of nuclear power before it's too late.

I agree that OOo can do most of what the average MS Word/Excel user needs... but the problem that I ran into when I was trying to import a Word document, then export it to PDF through OOo, was that the formatting was not preserved. Tabs, margins, etc. ended up at different locations - which was a real dealbreaker for the document I was working on at the time. Everything had to be in exactly the place I had set it.

Unfortunately, in that case, OOo didn't cut it. Does anybody know whether this is something that the OOo folks are working on? I wonder if this would have implications for some of the documents that are being imported and converted in the headline story...

Well... despite the seeming misnomer, the American version of football doesn't really offer much entertainment if the participants don't use their feet to move around the playing field. Besides, can anyone think of another name that we should call the sport that the NFL plays (that doesn't include the word "football")?

It's just too bad that your IT guys don't realize that you're actually helping them by reducing the chance of malware entering your corporate network. You'd think that the IT guys at a company would "see the light" so to speak, instead of mindlessly carrying out some antiquated marching orders.

It seems to me that PhotoMesa has nearly the exact same layout as, and many common features of, Canon's Zoom Browser program that they include with their digital cameras. CZB is a pretty decent program - decent enough that I don't even bother loading Picasa or anything else when importing pics from my camera. I think it's freely available through Canon's website. Another decent photo-browsing / lite editing program I like is FastStone Image Viewer. It's got a pretty cool interface, tons of options, and best of all, it's free as in beer.

I've found Avast anti-virus to take care of my needs, and have installed it on computers for my family members as well. It auto-updates, so they don't need to trouble themselves with any configuration, or worry about how old their virus definition files are. Best of all, the product is free (and just requires annual (free) re-registration).
