This somehow reminds me of what happened recently with Dreamhost. It's not the same thing but it's about a confusion of dates and the unability for the system to effectively check for ridiculous errors. It's pretty funny, too (except for the customers)
Basically someone put future dates in the billing system, making it believe we were in a future date, and resulting in ridiculous bills being sent out to every customer for a total of $7,500,000 in the short period of time the program run.
this doesn't make any sense. If you have the ability to phisically touch the recipient of the data, why not just use a cable? Or standardize a sort of "clip" usb port where you just have to touch the other phone to transmit data if you are paranoid about someone intercepting your data transfer and don't want to use a clunky cable?
There is a project like that in Switzerland. It has been debated for years now, and nothing concrete has been produced yet, but if I recall correctly the two national Swiss technical institutes are still working on it.
I think this move will repel those with an even slight knowledge of mobile apps, but the majority of customers just won't care. Out of all the people I know, those who use the web capabilities of their portable phone are surprisingly few. No one I know has opera mini installed, let alone caring which apps can be installed and which cannot.
Technologically less educated people in those case just believe the salesperson and assume it is "not compatible" with certains apps (which it is, but on purpose), but buy it anyway because it looks shiny or has a 3 megapixel camera.
Here you can get a free evaluation copy of Photoshop CS3 beta, which is an Universal Binary.
Photoshop is one of the most intuitive and complete image editing softwares out there. If it was such a crap I couldn't explain why basically every single professional photographer who goes through the digital stage at some point uses it.
Directors? Directors often don't have the "ulimate creative say so in movie cration". Producers and executive producers do. I'm talking about big productions here, the story may be different for independent movies.
Apple just pushed an update through Software Update that fixes potential daylight saving time problems. You can grab it here if you use Tiger, or here if you still use Panther. It also released a similar update for Java. here is the Tiger version and here is the Panther one.
"but the middle-click-scroll feature is pretty handy. I doubt it will appear in Mac OS X anytime soon --"
fyi, middle-click-scroll works out of the box with a three-button mouse in Mac Os X in Firefox. You just have to middle-click (anywhere on the page but NOT on a link, in which case the link will be opened in a new tab) and scroll away. Since it is feasable in an application, I suppose implementing it system-wide shouldn't be too complicate. I am not a programmer, though.
Yep. The video and images can also be found here, on the original and exclusive coverage of the attack put together by somethingawful.com with material provided by Room101, the originators of the attack.
I personally find somethingawful.com's Second Life Safari pretty hilarious, here are all the episodes so far, for those who missed them.
Well, my torrent client is always up and running, and using it for even smallish files doesn't bother me. I'm sure there are some more people in my situation, and if they all used bittorrent for things such as this, those who do not know how to, or do not want to use bittorrent maybe would be able to get the release via http or ftp.
Apparently, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment is using Ultrafast Laser Technology for some research, so I suppose someone already thought about using it in the military field. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich is collaborating with them, altough I find it really difficult to understand to what extent. From their webpage:
Dr. Arisholm is an expert in parametric three-wave interaction modelling. We collaborate on the design and implementation of chirped pulse optical parametric amplification (CPOPA) an alternative route to phase-controlled intense few-cycle laser pulses.
A friend of mine is studying chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich and one of the devices he most likes to talk about is their femtosecond laser, mainly because everytime he mentions it to non-scientists he obtains lots of funny blank stares. A literature student myself, now I finally discover that device has an immediate, practical utility! It can turn metals black, w00t!

You read way too much Lovecraft. Still, I'd give you a +1 insightful if I had mod points.
This must be the work of the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred! He did this to praise the Old Ones, no doubt.

The firefox plugin Noscript (direct install here) lets you block almost all unwanted web "features", including sounds. Very handy!
The inside of MySpace is a black hole of sinews of pain and sorrow spiraling down with a red bleeding rose at the very end of the abyss.

Yup, that's a typical Swiss-French accent. It's the accent from Valais more specifically, I'd say.

Is there an official torrent of the releases hosted somewhere reachable?
haha, wish I had my mod points!

And so does Camino on OSX :( I just tested it.
Because we are on slashdot and cute, young, innocent girls tend to be rare around here?
