    old days. .

It was the explanation I got when I entered a datacenter in manhattan that had at least 3 procs in every multiprocessor machine(75-100 machines). I think it may have been creative sales tactics on Compaq's part.

I've heard of some HALs reciting the words of children's songs when you remove various components too.

  3. 3 for redundance in the old days on Are three cores better than two? · · Score: 1

It used to be fairly common to install a 3rd processor in any Windows based SMP machine for redundancy.

Because Windows had a seperate HAL for single, and multi processor configurations the machine would not be able to function with a single processor without a reinstall of the OS. I think this scenario is handled fairly well now but having 3 processors meant that you could loose one and the machine would still be able to boot in years past.

I am a 'social introvert' too. I haven't always been.

To me my outgoing work personality and my ability to strike up conversations with random people is learned because being an extrovert is the 'norm' and it will benefit me professionally. It feels very fake and I know it isn't genuine but I've observed people for a long time and I truely feel like I successfully exhibit a non introverted persona intentionally.

Hops were originally used to preserve beer before refrigeration existed. Someone observed that people handling the hops got sleepy so some of it's other uses have been known for some time. I've smoked hops before in an attempt to get it's sleep inducing qualities but the whole idea of drinking more beer to get this benefit seems silly if it's just the hops that provide it.

Sam Adams is the hoppiest beer that I know of and it's my preferred poison but it seems that hops by themselves could be used unless the beneficial compounds are created by the fermenting process.

I've seen horrible accidents happen on TV just as people taste Sam Adams Lite for the first time so be careful.

SCO isn't the only party you have to worry about.

Now that Oracle owns a company whose technology mySQL is dependant upon they should probably be considered a threat as well. They are also an agressive company (ask PeopleSoft) and mySQL uses DB technologies from Berkely too? Others?

We could potentially have a situation where a litiguous bastard company like SCO makes a claim and demands $$ for that IP. The only difference in this case is that those claims would not be baseless.

Microsoft (reaper of other's creations) bought Sybase's database technologies fair and square. MSSQL 6.5 was a significant revision, and 7.0 was a complete rewrite (so they said.) Improving on existing technologies isn't a bad thing but in the OSS world it should be considered very carefully.

Who the mySQL CEO is hanging out with is not the issue. Where money is moving to/from isn't the issue.

The issue is that some litiguous bastard company has tried to bite us and we need to make sure we dont let it happen again.

The clear winner is Postgresql which has been developed from the ground up and isn't a convenient wrapper for other's technologies. ?? Maybe mySQL can use some of that money to negate their dependance on foreign IP. If not then postgresql is the answer.
