they're working on it. there are comments here about it sucking - what do you expect for a test release? also, at least they're putting something usable out there. yes, i'll be sticking with gaim, *but*... at least they're developing for linux. and this is what we need. you say "too little too late" - they don't *have* to develop for linux, just like you don't have to use their software. all i want is software that doesn't suck - and if linux aim develops fast and overtakes gaim as an excellent, featurefull client, i'll use it.
i dunno. i did my part and shelled out $50 for q3arena for linux, and honestly, i found the install to be really easy and straightforward. then ran the point release to upgrade it and i was online and playing in no time. honestly, i had the most trouble getting it working under windows on the same machine (used to be dual boot, and yes, for gaming). the linux quake3 was less of a hassle for me. i guess part of the problem is that a lot of stores don't stock the linux version, so the linux gamer who wants it just buys the windows version and gets it working. personally, i own both copies ('cause i played it in windows long before linux) but hey. i dunno. i guess all i can do is encourage the linux gamers out there to go and BUY linux games. if the store doesn't stock them, ask them to. let them know that there is a market. and please, PLEASE don't "pirate" linux games... it hurts sales, makes the market look smaller and leads to less linux game development.
one option is to *not* agree with the microsoft EULA - remember this? it states (or did last time i checked) that if you did not agree, return the product for a refund. so it's pretty simple - once you get your computer, fdisk and delete current operating system, install whatever you want, call up microsoft or your oem and say that you don't agree with microsoft's eula and that they need to issue you a refund. if they say it's not in their power to do so, take their name "for my records" and then ask to speak to their superior. go on up as far as you have to. we, as customers, do not need to be subjected to this bullshit. once i got the guts to do it once, i do it all the time, whenever i'm ripped off or whatever. and i *always* get my way. you can do it too. if they continue to refuse, make sure to note that you will never be purchasing products from them again. if they still refuse, say something along the lines of "well, i'm sorry, i just figured you issuing me a refund wouldn't be as much of a hassle for you as the letter to the editor campaign i'm going to start once i get off the phone." you'll get your money:)

he's quite wealthy. back in 1996 (i *think*) he was estimated at $200 million. he has just traditionally always kept out of the spotlight, and so you never hear about it. anyway, he lives comfortably, and with his spare time and money teaches music and computers to children. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
there's a documentary-like feature done by PBS called "Triumph of the Nerds" and my dad being the Director of Engineering at an affiliate of PBS, I had him get me a copy. They cover Woz pretty well. By this I mean, they show his technical genius and accomplishments as well as his humility. I can't help but get the impression from *everything* I read, hear or see about Woz that he's a genuinely good human being and really one of the greatest hackers ever. It's always nice to hear about him in the news from time to time. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
Don't mean to nitpick, but for people looking for what you're talking about, it's the Intellimouse Explorer or the Intellimouse with IntelliEye. The regular Intellimouse is a mouse with a ball, but what makes it "intelli" is the scrolling wheel. Anyway, yes, they are pretty good, but the price is still pretty high (~$60 when I got mine). -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
hmmm. it's an idea. but you need to understand where i live. most of the people around here don't have a computer. if they do, they're not the type that are into linux (let's admit it, linux isn't for everyone). gotta get people using linux first, and like i said, i've gotten three into it, but one went off to college... that leaves two:) 3 people isn't much of a LUG:) -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
so here i am in maryland, just like you. in carroll county, actually (where the men are men and the sheep are SCARED.) what is there around here for us linux dorks? i have exactly two friends around here that use linux, both of whom were introduced to it by myself. i'm sure at least i would like to go to a decent gathering around here, but i'm not aware of any in the area. my budget is also *extremely* limited (i'm poor, that's why i use linux!). any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.

i, for one, would like to be able to play mp3s through my stereo system. better speakers = better sound, and more surrounding as well. and i think the equipment stores mp3s on it, you can *get* the mp3s off your computer and store them on the rack. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
if it's intentionally trying to confuse children, then it would fall under the "confusingly similar" umbrella and probably could be stopped with court action on mcdonald's part. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
i understand. but suppose it did - this wouldn't surprise me. at all. and that's what i was saying. it seems to me that it's inevitable that eventually we'll find life out there... or it'll find us. this might be nothing. but it might be something. either way, interesting. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
this doesn't surprise me at all. it's a wee bit off topic, but i expect that we'll be finding more and more things like this as time progresses. there's a good book by isaac asimov called "extraterrestrial civilzations" i believe and in it he speculates on the existance of other intelligent life in the universe. it seems ridiculous to assume that we're alone, so i guess things like these don't surprise me. anyway, i'd be interested in where this discovery leads and what we can make of it. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
that is with 2 netscape's open, netscape composer, xmms playing an mp3 (legal too), gaim, licq, 2 xterms, gqview, electric eyes and xchat running under gnome 1.2 with windowmaker 0.61.1... i'm experiencing no slow downs whatsoever. your stability argument, quite frankly, is untrue. win2k has better stability *than previous versions of windows*... it still does not beat a linux system. mine is used a good 10-14 hours every day, playing quake3 and mp3s and pushing it to the limit. 128 megs of ram. that's all. and it runs like a charm.
there are plenty of good reasons to switch. yeah, maybe we don't have ms office or visual c++, but linux is strong in other areas. anyone that argues otherwise is suffering from blatant ignorance. i experience better stability and speed from this box running linux than i ever did with windows (exact same hardware). all my software (except quake3 and unreal tournament) was *free* costwise, and most of it free in the sense that i can modify and distribute the source code. most people don't want to do that, but *i* do, and i'm not alone. furthermore, i like the ability to customize. when i used to use windows, i ran litestep because it offered me that, at least to an extent. with linux i'm able to switch window managers on the fly, even whole desktop environments. i can make my desktop look however i want. virtual window managing is far superior in linux desktop environments than its windows counterparts, and that helps me get done what i need to get done. i listed the current apps i have open - could you imagine all of that on a single desktop?
this is not to say that linux is for everyone. but your assertion that there is no reason to switch to linux is both silly and offensive. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
i was impressed beyond impressed with the mandrake 7.1 setup. it installed *everything*... i set it up on a friend's computer, it detected his damn 3d accelerator and installed drivers for that! it worked right out of the box... i was impressed with redhat 6.1's setup (what i'm running on this box) but mandrake 7.1 puts everything else i've seen to shame. quite impressive. -- DeCSS source code! you must amputate to email me.
