    i can see this guy *not* getting the part, and here's why - june 9, 1999? THAT's when he became sexually attracted to her? a month after the movie came out? obviously he meant may, but lucas will read that and laugh. if he even reads it, which i doubt he will.

    this isn't meant as flamebait, but he deserves it. the stuff he was doing was illegal. it has almost no practical use, other than to show a security hole, and the best way to do that is NOT by defacing the webpage. that's like breaking into a house and trashing it to show that locking your door is a good idea. yeah, it works, but there are other ways.

    we need a professional quality 3D CAD solution. 2D is fine for beginners and whatnot, but anyone that's even semi-advanced should be drawing 3D. anyone know of a 3D CAD solution for linux?

    these are the things we need to see - linux becoming a "commercially viable alternative" to nt. the public needs to see them too. on microsoft's site, there's a page ("Linux Myths") which is of course the normal FUD that we expect from them, but it's written very well - read: persuasive to newcomers. with ~50% of compaq servers running linux...well, they're not doing it because it's a poor alternative. things like this need to be cast into the light so the public can see them.

    basically, this is an issue of the US using their own product, even when the other option is inferior. my father is the Senior Director of Broadcast Engineering at WETA (Washington Education Telecommunications Association) in D.C. (quite a title, eh?) he's normally a very patriotic american and was at first in favor of the US standard, but after researching it more, it seems clear that the European standard is better. the problem is, the US is going to use their own standard because it was created here and there's that sense of pride. i find it pretty ridiculous that we're passing up quality for pride.

    perhaps i should have been more clear - i'm talking about Compaq, etc. being sued. if you'll notice, the post was in response not to the article about toshiba, but about the other companies.

    will the companies realize that it's probably better for the industry to fight these law suits and (hopefully) win instead of settling out of court? sure, it's easier to settle, but i think the industry needs to show that nonsense like this won't be tolerated. this is absolutely ridiculous.

    Or at least I think so. Once they make it secure enough that casting fraudulent votes is impossible. But isn't securing a system that much impossible? Isn't there always some way in? I'm sure they can come up with something *really* good, but will it ever be good enough?

    I don't know, but I hope they do - voting from my computer is a lot more convenient than getting in the car and driving 20 minutes, then waiting in line to vote.

    how much you wanna bet people start superimposing images of ghosts or whatever on it (i'm talking actually doing a decent job, working with translucency, etc) and saying they plucked it off the site and were the first to see it? aye. seems kinda ridiculous to me to even put one up, but i guess it's a decent way to generate page impressions.

    no, but seriously, things like this *are* good for beginning users. i hate to see wars between distributions or anything like that, but ranking them and pointing out strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as stating which is easier to install, etc. is a fine idea.

    no, it *is* a free market economy - if you don't want to buy it, don't. if you can't afford it, don't buy it. the consumer has the power to choose, as does the company. they *can* raise the prices, and consumers *can* walk away. that sounds pretty free-market to me...

    ace hardware got beaten down pretty bad. a lot of the food vendors and whatnot were alright. ace was selling stuff ridiculously expensive, like twine @ $1/foot and tent stakes for $1 each. ya know, those cheap little plastic ones you can get 12/$1 anywhere else. we left right after the jimi hendrix tribute, so we didn't see much carnage, but i heard they were all protected by insurance anyway...

    when we were at woodstock, a bottle of water was $4. on a really hot day when there wasn't much cold water, $6. vendors were charging $10 for a 10 pound bag of ice, unless it was real hot - then it was $20.

    if you ask me, things like this are silly. if coke does this, people will just go buy from pepsi (you guys with me on this one?)

    L0pht pulled their named from the fact that their headquarters was their "loft." It is indeed pronounced "loft" and not "low fat."

    Adaptec Easy CD Creator (you can get it from their website) should do the job quite nicely. Create CD from Image, and then select "ISO." I'm sure there are other programs on TUCOWS that will do it too. I'm sure you've got the bandwidth to download a few of them to check out if you're going to download an ISO....

    No, it wasn't necessary, but relax man. You've got enough karma to last you until rapture. Two negative points aren't gonna hurt you THAT bad, and the comment wasn't so important that the /. community needed to be reading it. Personally, I agree with you that moderators -1 comments too frequently - the moderation system is designed to promote good comments.

    You think that the NSA is just a buncha nerds? Nah. This guy's obviously an NSA guy, writing this to make us THINK that they aren't the ones behind the JFK assassination.

    So in my not so humble, but somewhat educated, opinion, the popular view of the NSA is fairly inaccurate, and confusingly to me, they seem uninterested in correcting that view. -- This is their method. They reel ya in with this "educated outsider" approach. Aren't interested in correcting it - nah, that's what this guy's doing.

    Now watch, tomorrow morning I'll have a "heart attack," right after my computer is stolen by a "burgular".... :)
