    crooks will still steal them to use in committing ram raids and such though. here being able to lock your car is part of getting a road worthy cert, and it's not at all a bad thing.

    Well, as I read it the car could be locked, it just couldn't be unlocked :)

    So what is a "proper" OS? What does Windows do wrong, that your "proper" OS does right?

    For starters it's a proprietary OS, that's enough for me... I'm sure we all know the rest of the arguments... Besides Microsoft is inherently evil :)

    You're right they don't deserve it - but giving information to criminals to make it easier for them to steal - thus hurting society as a whole - is not the answer. Unfortunately the security of ATM's is greater then these researches desire to present their work.

    Releasing the hole does not hurt society, however, it does hurt Diebold customers and partners.

    Which version of Eclipse were you using? Which version of the Java JDK? Are you sure it wasn't running on the gimped Java that comes with Ubuntu by default?

    Eclipse 3.2, JRE 1.5 gcj 4.3
    Okay... Just tried it again... And I can't write two lines before code completion comes up... but it still drives my fans to 100% and it's still horribly slow...

    I confident that it can be configured correctly, but why isn't it so by default?
    Also where is the integrated UI-designer, need I download that as a plugin... Does it work with GTK or Qt?

    All the bad thing metioned, Eclipse has some seriously nice features, such as showing unhandled exceptions while coding... :)

    This semester I completed a beginner course in Java... Now I have developed on .Net using VS.Net, SharpDevelop and MonoDevelop, and honestly I found eclipse to be VERY heavy compared to MonoDevelop...
    Now, it's fairly possible that I didn't configure it correctly... Why eclipse under Ubuntu needs configuration after install in order to provide inline help (javadoc) for codecompletion I don't know... But I found eclipse to be so slow that it was unusable for any real purposes... Codecompletion with Javadoc was simply 2 lines slower than I'd usually type :(

    Note: I did this using Ubuntu 8.10 on a thinkpad with an Intel Core 2 and 2 GiB ram, so it's hopefully not my system spec that not matching...

    You and me both, but I'm a little confused. What do they mean by "windowing system"?

    They probably mean that they are going to do a window manager...
    My guess is that they give MatchBox tabs e.g. no freely movable windows... If they can then do it better than Ubuntu did it, then maybe they've got a change...

    But What about package management, are they doing their own... Personally I hope not :)

    You not subsidizing anything... It's just the terms of the free market...

    What do you want? Protectionism? FYI that's kind of what they have in North Korea... :)

    I'm not a capitalist, more like a liberal socialist, but I'm fairly confident that free trade is better for everyone in the longterm...

    ... those EU drones in Brussels should do something, a constitutional amendment perhaps ?

    I hope not... Then we'd have to make a constitutional amendment for every type of communication network that is invented in the future...
    - But I'd like to see some regulations too...

    Ontopic: I don't know any opensource app stores that sells open source software... And why not make it easy to sell opensource software, hopefully cross desktops...

    It's funny that you say so... I study CS on a university where we work a lot in groups... In the last project we wrote a ray tracer in C++ with SDL, libnetpbm and pthreads...

    As the others in my groups were novice developers, I decided to use codeblocks on Linux/Ubuntu... The windows users in our project ran VS...

    Now using pkg-config and sdl-config, I could easily enable codeblocks to build under different distros... It even used relatives paths for source files, so I could check the project file into svn...

    The windows users on the other hand had to enter absolute paths for libraries and couldn't share project file... And they had a hassle finding the libraries, whereas the linux users, me included, just got them from the package manager...

    Now it's very likely that I didn't care to help the windows users making stuff run smoothly... and it's very possible that the windows users could have fixed the issue... Not that I know of any reasonable approaches... Nevertheless, at the end of the project, everybody agreed that development under Linux was a lot easier... :)

    I agree, I don't see what you'd gain from removing it... Anybody why would care to explain...

    I understand that maybe it easier to make bugs when you pointers from one arbitrary type to another... And ignore the type system, (I have a habit of doing so, once in a while)... But wouldn't it be better to just no use C instead?

    Besides what the difference between memcpy and strncpy? or a simple for loop for that matter...

    What Phoenix is doing is pushing Windows into a VM, permanently.

    And that's were it belongs :)

    If this hits mainstream it won't be long till users have forgotten about windows, because they were using the browser while windows was starting...

    I'm pretty sure the vast majority on this side of the pond would disagree with you... Strict gun control is great! And frankly, I don't want the right to defend myself... I'm perfectly fine leaving that job to the professionals, i.e. the police. :)

    I bought a laptop with an AMD/ATI chip in for this purpose... Only to discover that there wasn't any free driver available for my card...

    Which likely makes it the last time I'm not buying Intel... :)

    No-brainer. Put men aboard the ships who don't fear guns, and allow them to defend themselves.

    Soldiers, then it's probably not a problem... Given that the soldiers you're bringing along will be allowed in the nations to sailing between. But arming civilians sounds like a bad idea to me... and I wouldn't vote for a politician who thinks civilians should be allowed to carry guns for the purpose of protection.

    And, allow me to point out the obvious. Your freedom depends on those who carry guns. That's all well and good, if you can gullibly trust those who control the guns.

    I don't hope you're trying to argue pro-gun policy with me, because that would indeed be a wast of you're time...

    By the way, I'm sorry about the "most civilized nations", but death penalty, weapon policy and lack of social responsibility often courses me to consider a nation uncivilized :)

    How many countries apart from the USA do you think are stupid enough to allow civilians to carry weapons?
    I'm pretty sure you'd have a hard time finding a harbor in Europe that will take you in and not put you in jail for a few years :)

    Seriously, guns in the hands of civilians is not a solution. I know it's a subject for discussion in USA, but in most civilized nations there's no pro-gun lobby organizations, nor any desire for guns within the population.
    (Guns for hunting and sports excepted, however, still strongly restricted. Also all automatic stuff like M-16 is strictly banned).

    In comment to my note I should probably note that I'm a socialist!!! :)

    And would like to see our liberal party out of office... Capitalism is just undermining our welfare, social responsibility and commonsense.

    To be honest (I probably shouldn't) I don't get you Americans. I wouldn't trade universal health care, educational support, universities and all the other public services in our welfare society for a million dollars...
    I believe that you should have the same opportunities to get an education and make a living regardless of whether or not you dad is an alcoholic or has a successful business.
    And if doing so means taxes between 40% and 60%, depending on income, that's fine by me.

    The word socialism is completely taboo in Sweden as much as it is in the US.

    I'm not Swedish, I'm Danish... But I can ensure that in both Denmark, Sweden and many other European countries socialism is not a bad word...
    Note: Our liberal parties are more socialistic that Obama.

    Censorship is when you secretly censor things... Filtering is when it's no secret what is being filtered.
    Also, I wouldn't call this filtering either, Amazon is not removing the books completely, they're just not actively referring customers to those books.

    You don't have to upgrade the damn software in order to replace failed hardware.

    That's right... Now we just need to find a highlevel programming language and framework that won't be obscure in 15 years... As far as I can see that's not easy, and C is not a highlevel language :)
