Really can you assemble a community to maintain and develop OpenOffice?
Last time I heard OpenOffice was a project with a very small volunteer community...
And who is going to pay developers to work on it... Novell, might contribute a little, Google also AFAIK. IBM maybe, but I doubt that they care...
As for VirtualBox is there a community around VirtualBox?
You can't just opensource a codebase and expect 100 coders to appear out of nothing to maintain your codebase... Building a large stable community is not easy and doesn't happen by itself. If it did Sun would already have large community around Solaris and OpenOffice, but how many volunteer developers are working on OpenOffice?
It's more likely that fact that he doesn't want to learn a new system every 5 years... He just wants the things to work... And probably couldn't care less for fancy graphics and features.
Honestly, do you really think any distros today will be supported on 15 years?
Seriously, it be hard to even pick a highlevel programming language and framework that won't be obscure or incompatible in 15 years...
If you could just do that, then who cares if there's disk failure in 5 years, and a motherboard in 10, if you can just find a programming language and framework, that'll still run the same stuff in 15 years...
Can you even be sure that x86 won't be somewhat obscure in 15 years?
Drive decreased by half. Is not a substainable solution... Drive decreased with only a few percentage for after that I'd replace it...
Also, won't you lose data?
Britain has yet to seriously discuss reparations for the damage done to Africa from the profits they made in the slave trade.
And I seriously hope we never do, not because I agree with slavery, but because I disagree with being held accountable for something that someone did 200 years ago.
Britain has yet to seriously discuss reparations for the damage done to Africa from the profits they made in the slave trade.
I'm pretty sure most Europeans would laugh of such as suggestion too...:)
I'm not even dependent on my parents for my education, why in the world should we hold ourselves responsible for stuff that happened hundreds of years ago... When we have a system where we attempt to give children the same opportunities no matter how drunk, broken and stupid their parents are...
Imagine two goods, good A and good B, that are sold on the open market. Good A sells for a price that is eight times greater than good B. Person A was able to produce good A in one day, and person B was able to produce good B in one day. So, on the open market, person A makes eight times more money than person B in the same period of time. That means consumers have judged person A to be eight times more productive than person B, even if person B worked much harder!
Sadly, today marketing is probably the only thing consumers have judged... Not the product! Not the environmental aspects of the production! And not the conditions under which the workers who did the product worked!
Sadly, consumers are stupid, really really seriously stupid.
So, if person A and person B happen to be working for the same company, why shouldn't their boss pay person A eight times more than person B? Why should their boss come up with some arbitrary limit?
If god was the boss he'd give them the same
- Sorry, I couldn't help it, I just had to point it out:)
When I buy a license to a work from a content distributer... I get a copy of that work too... And I want to be able to do anything I want with that copy, apart from redistribution!
Where I live, costumers can get the credit card companies to cancel the transaction if the product isn't delivered...
However, I think a part of the problem is that people doesn't know they've been subject to fraud. As I assume they do get a pretty look antivirus app, that doesn't do much but look pretty...:)
Right. Just look at what communist Russia gave us.
- Nukes
I don't know what your history book says... But mine doesn't say that Russians invented nukes, nor that they gave them to the Americans.
Did you ever for a second think that maybe nuking Japan was a contributing factor to the weapon race?
Back on topic, I hope it's possible to have less capitalistic society, than what is the norm today... Where I live (e.g. Denmark) I'm pretty happy with the current public services, health care, free education, educational support etc...
But there's still way too many greedy companies making a living from cheating customers, one way or the other (e.g. fake bills, wrong bills, DRM, subscriptions etc.).
And most if is not large enough to go to court, nor do people have the resources to do so, or care to it for that matter... But it's just a PITA to automatically without notice being given a cable subscription when you move in a new apartment... Etc...:)
Beginners should be using add/remove software under Ubuntu... It's slower, and horrible for anybody who can use synaptic... But I think it's pretty fool proof...:)
This would actually violate the human rights article 11. In EU you'd actually be able to test such a "conviction" at the European court of human rights, which AFAIK trumps the national courts.
However, question is just how they are going to implement such law...
By the way, in my opinion all 3 strikes laws, whether it's life-time prison, your drivers license or you internet, is bad!
- People only make them because they are easy so sell... IMO 3-strike laws of anykind are NEVER good!
I record my music from internet radio, which is legal, in my country of residence... And I wouldn't mind buying the tracks if the came at less than a dollar and without DRM... But where I live no such services are available... Stuff from iTunes Plus generally costs about 2USD, and iTunes doesn't even run on my platform of choice... Some other distributers have started offering mp3's on a small subset of their collection... Meanwhile they support DRM, and create music subscriptions with DRM... E.g. Another company I can't and will not support!
So they're not practical to solve--in other words, practically impossible.
I agree... Though I'd prefer the term computationally infeasible.
In order to call it practically impossible I'd say that you need consider size of the problem (e.g. the n from the big-O notation) and available computer power for computation...
Another thing that is forgotten... When a process can be optimized, it normally results in price-cuts which result in heavier use of the process.
Not if we TAX it:)
Okay, just kidding... But when optimizing a process and thus generating heavier resource usage, it'll also have a positive impact on the economy... Nevertheless, if we really want to cut CO2, you need to change your way of life... E.g. consume less, which could undoubtedly be achieved through higher energy taxes:)
...because the North Koreans are militaristic nut cases
And would you claim that the Americans less militaristic nut cases than the North Koreans?
(Rhetorical question - you need not answer I've already prejudged you by reading the second amendment).
Doesn't that just mean that a whole chain of people at Google now know the location is sensitive and could turn around and pass on that information?
Don't you think the workers who built the place knows where it is, or did they bury them when they were done building it?
It's not like you can easily hide big things when thousands of people are involved in building and maintaining them... Perhaps it's just better to let it be a public secret...
... Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published statements on the theory of evolution and opinion about those who do not believe in the theory are contrary and offensive to the views and opinions of most citizens of Oklahoma.
How does views and opinions of any majority matter in the context of science??? (Science is NOT democrazy).
That the Oklahoma House of Representatives encourages the University of Oklahoma to engage in an open, dignified, and fair discussion of the Darwinian theory of evolution
If Dawkins really is a troll who is only going to talk about how stupid people who does believe in creationism is, then I don't see what's wrong with stating that you do not agree. Nevertheless if he was troll, then he'd probably not be of Oxford University...:)
I agree that webapps cannot replace good old desktop apps... etc.... But wouldn't there be some use cases in which Google apps might be an appropriate choice? Nevertheless, they're not going to replace a huge installed base over night... And a little competition is not bad...

Somewhat offtopic:
Just because they're selling guns doesn't mean people have to shoot themselves in the foot.
I'm a European, and I honestly believe that American gun laws is just another way to express stupidity.
Oh, and yes... Don't give me a gun because I WILL shoot myself in the foot!!! :)
- If not for fun than, at the very least to prove my point

Do I need, say more?
Will I be able to compete against Android... if popular apps for android are locked to Googles platform?
If so, then what's the point of the DRM?
I don't think this is evil.
Content protection = DRM = Evil
Am I wrong...?
Note: I don't like bashing Google, but we need watch out, they may be just as capable of creating a monopoly as Microsoft...
But the phrase "copy-protected" says otherwise...
