  1. Re:Talking to myself on U.S. Insists On Keeping Control Of Internet · · Score: 1

Thats quite correct, I think that based on current evidence the Bush administration is completely inept, and quite frankly stupid as hell. I have no idea if I would feel better with Kerry in charge, I'd judge that on evidence of his government's performance.

My point about the natural disaster was not with respect to developing the net, but to do with their ability and willingness to handle disasters, hypothetically would they attempt to take precautions against a knwon large threat of some kind to the net?

At this stage of the net's development their arguement for keeping hold of the root DNS servers is petty (historic ownership or whatever crap arguement it is).

  2. Re:Talking to myself on U.S. Insists On Keeping Control Of Internet · · Score: 2, Insightful

Its exactly why I personally support a UN body taking over the root DNS servers. The idea of the Bush government holding control over the net is just scary.

The arguement that "If its not broke then don't fix it" doesn't really hold true here, with the way that America is going its almost like watching a natural disaster coming right at you and not making any kind of precautions. Oh wait... didn't the Bush administration do just that?

I really don't have confidence the current US government making any possible necessary changes to the net in the future.

It seems that digital archiving is a small problem in comparison to the possible dangers of DRM, considering that there will always be some kind of format which most likely will be contingent for years (for example .txt for plain text).

Its most likely that there will always be a crazy specialist somewhere who deals with 10-20 year old hardware and could get your archaic data into a modern format for you, assuming that your media hasn't disintegrated over time (which is probably a harder problem to crack).

I was thinking that for more normal computer users (read: not /.ers) having a package with some cool functionality without having to mess around with lots of extensions themselves would be useful as often they'll have been tricked into buying that uber new P4 3.6 for £1500 for web browsing and the occasional Word Document from PCWorld and a small performance hit won't bother these types of users at all.

I agree with you on this point. If the mozilla devs want to add these cool but technically unnecessary features in (which is cool), then release them as official extensions to the main browser to stop it getting all microsofty and bloated.

The devs could then release different versions of the same browser for example; a lightweight version, regular version with some official mozilla feature extensions preloaded, and a heavyweight version with the offical mozilla features plus some of the best community extensions preloaded.

It would... if Bentham's Utilitarianism worked properly. Unfortunately its pretty damn easy to twist the Hedonic Calculus to your own means, or for governments to just plain ignore the parts that they don't want people to see. I think it was Mill who made some steps towards a more sane theory by adding in different levels of pleasure and happiness to the base theory.

Utilitarianism also has the unfortunate prerequisite of almost requiring precognative abilities in predicting the consequences of actions, and governments are notorious for not realising quite how extensive the ramifications of their actions are already.
