  1. Re:Avoid Oracle on What's the Oracle Trial Against SAP Really About? · · Score: 1
No. There is no such thing as "abusive commerce". If the company abides the law, it is just commerce. Maximizing profits, nothing else. The laws they abide may be not to your liking, but that's politics and philosophy. And what you call "abusive companies" are the most successful ones (MS, Oracle, Oil Industries, etc). This is what capitalism is about. Just read Adams, and then read Marx (take both with a grain of salt). Apart from his political agenda, Marx' analysis of capitalism is brilliant.

There is commerce and there is abusive commerce. Eventually those who engage in abusive commerce are replaced.

I'd say it's the other way round. Have a look at the textile industry ("made in Bangladesh").

Be surprised then ;) I worked on contract for IBM in the financial sector, and the very core of every bank, insurance corp or stock exchange I came across is some sort of transaction system (cics, ims) with a huge code base of COBOL packages. These systems run on shiny new big irons and the software is everything but ancient. Nobody risks to replace the core applications, they are the most stable systems I have ever seen and fast as hell. This is the sole reason COBOL will and cannot die in the foreseeable future.

Everything else runs on top of systems, they are the backbone of the financial world.

Preach water, drink wine. Worked for both the churches for millennia. In fact, it worked for every authoritative religion. I hate to be the messenger, but that's how these schemes work. Opposed to Hinduism, Buddhism, the ancient Greek Theatre or any other of these "religions" which aren't really religions but rather philosophies and schools of thought, the western religions always were, are, and always will be, about power and control, nothing else. Especially about control over the inner private live of a person, which cannot be gained otherwise. The wise thing to do is to not submit to such kind of stuff and to keep your children away from religion until they are old enough to decide for themselves.

I'm SO sick of this false argument about "it's already public!". Just to make it clear, so even you can understand it: when I walk in public, yes, you can see me, but in order to see me, you need to be NEAR ME. Which is OK. Now, with CCTV, you do NOT to be NEAR ME. Thus, the number of eyes that can see me walking in public explodes. Al-right? There is a difference between "public" and "tv show stage".

Ubuntu always (also forced by the license) contributes to many linux projects, not only gnome or the kernel. Linux wouldn't be where it is without him backing up that company. Well, this "fundamental problem" is easy to see and understand, and most people DO see it (ask anyone about evil corporations). But we still have food on the table and a home for the table, so most people don't care, because it only affects those "downloaders yknow", not the majority, which still buys dvds or cds or pay for downloads.

The danger is harder to see (but most people see it, never underestimate people), it's the infrastructure, both political and industrial which is put into place. And this infrastructure can and will be used in really bad ways. The nazis came into power in germany deploying exactly this technique: using the infrastructure to come into power (they didn't have the majority in the parliament at that time, not even close) and then abuse it to no extend.
