Even if Microsoft has slowed down, I'd be very suprised if they all of a sudden went belly-up.

The increase of competition is a good thing, as companies have to make their products better than their competitors, and sometimes selling them at a cheaper price.

I just wonder how many small companies with great ideas were too intimidated by Microsoft to put those ideas into action (a certain Simpsons episode comes to mind, no?)

If you install Windows, you are making a conscious decision to open yourself up to a plethora of attacks that simply aren't possible on any other platform. Although Windows is not as safe as UNIX systems, it is the user that makes themselves so vulnerable. No amount of anti-virus protection can keep an ill-informed people safe. How do most people get malware of their computers? Email attachments from unknown people, pirate programs, and shoddy site (usually PORN). I bet that everyone here could use a Windows XP machine w/o anti-virus and not get viruses. Of course many Windows machines will be infected; the people using them are usually the ill-informed.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't stand MMORPG's after a certain period of time. Of course, all of them are fun at the beginning, but I've found that the fun degenerates over time. Every time. WoW is no exception.

However, I've been playing my GBA and DS games forever, and haven't gotten bored of them yet. I just feel that MMORPG get "too same" after a while. I'm sure the single player games get boring after a while too, but it's easy to switch. What's stopping me from putting in a new CD/Cartridge in?

Games like WoW are a little harder to quit for me because I've spent so much time building up a character, and quitting makes me feel like I've wasted a lot of time and money.

But then, I'm not a heavy gamer, either.

  9. Re:Trix is for Kids! on Realism vs. Style: the Zelda Debate · · Score: 1, Insightful

It's nothing the gaming industry can do. All of the hooplah over video game stems from shitty parenting.

Hell, when I was a kid, my parents didn't want me playing Mortal Kombat II because they didn't think the fatalities were suitable for people my age. So what did they do? They sat down and talked to me. They started explaining about violence, that video games weren't real, that the best way to solve problems was throught talking, blah blah blah.

They didn't start complaining to the media/government, they did their jobs as parents. That's not what I'm seeing a lot of today. While I'm sure there are still good parents out there, there seems to be too many parents who want companies to do their job for them.

"*Religion finds answers the ethical questions facing all of mankind.
    * Science explains the natural world."

    Not really.
Early mythology tried to explain the natural world. I'm sure we've all heard about Helio's chariot explained the Sun's course, and something with Hades and a pomegranate explained the seasons. Religion tried to explain everyday life.

It's not only limited to early civilization, but today too. Isn't the beginning of the bible explaining the origin of life? Are you suggesting that that the origin of life is not a part of natural life?

Also, did not the creation (and use) of atomic bombs bring about a debate as to whether or not they were ethical?

Never can you draw a clean distinct line between two topics, especially with general expressions such as "science" and "religion."

I'm sorry about that, but you were just unlucky there. There are plenty of rotten teachers out there, and your daughter was stuck with one. You can't assume that every teacher in the world is going to be as self-centered as your sister-in-law's.
The only objection I would have to sports in schools would be all the time it takes. Kids are giving around 3-4 hours a day practicing, and game days are espically longer. And they don't come home rested and immediately ready to do homework/study.

The other thing is, for God's sake DITCH MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS!
Why? Multiple choice problems are only worthless when the possible answers are bullshit. I swear to god, on one of my english finals in 9th grade a question went as such.
    Odyseus kills the suitors by:
    A. Bow and Arrow
    B. Knife
    C. Machine Gun.

My professor in UCLA had a wonderful system. It was multiple multiple choice. Every question on the test could have 1-4 answers, and each answer choice was close. Plus, right answers gave +1, while incorrect choices gave -1.25. You seriously had to know your stuff for that test.
Multiple choice, like everything, is only bad when it's used badly.

Can I ask since when you started using a mac? I ask because you may think the Windows GUI is boring and dull because you've been around it for a long time. It's like when you got a new toy as a kid. You'd play with it for a week, and then it went into the bin of toys you'd never play with again.

I have mixed feelings on this subject. One side tells me to be "human" and that further research on this type of science may start saving lives, but the other side intervenes. In High School, I had a crazy Biology teacher who kept stressing overpopulation of humans. As one can assume, sooner or later there will be no more room for more humans on earth. Even if we do end up mowing down all of nature (unless we bomb ourselves to death or something) sooner or later there won't be enough food, shelter, etc for everybody. (something about a carrying capacity or something).

Which brings about the question: Are there too many humans on Earth? If yes, why try saving more? Death is a part of life, and it is unavoidable (and hopefully it will always be inevitable.) If the population is still booming this much with people dying left and right, how will delaying death help?

I know, I know, people are going to rebuke, "Well, you hypocrite bastard, if your family members could be saved by it, you'd jump on the opportunity." There's always that issue of "It'll happen, but I'll be long dead before anything like that happens."

Yeah, but do we want to live in a world without death?
