The problem isn't the GUI but the crappy proprietary core. If you ported Metro to GNU/Linux you'd have Ubuntu with desktop icons.

Not to mention that Gnome or Unity (two different things IMHO) aren't the only desktops out there. Most distros include other desktops or tutorials are readily available.

Windows works like an old donkey, dragging its feet and complaining, right out of the box. But there is no way to fix it or ensure against the registry slowdown.

Linux will in some cases require editing a few settings in a .conf (text) file once, and adding restricted/proprietaty stuff once, but usually just works right out of the box. And there's always a way to fix it when you've screwed up.

I call BS on GP. You're just too lazy to learn something different.

Plenty of people only use their computers for basic web/email/word processing and games and the only thing that ties them to Windows is games. I'm sure plenty would welcome the opportunity to not have to pay for Windows (or have the hassle of pirating it) so long as the games they want to play are available on Linux.

You forget that apart from the hardcore gamers, the average gamer will use whatever OS that is currently on the box. You'll need a heavy branding of GNU/Linux qua The Gamer OS (TM) before these guys switch + an option to buy commodity computers without an OS. I have yet to succeed in getting my mythical Windows refunds, usually I'm told to shop elsewhere if I'm "gonna be trouble".

"Biggest" != "greatest". Unless you speak American, I guess. And since this is slashdot.org, not slashdot.us or slashdot.org.us, American is not the appropriate language to default to.

Sorry, I was writing on my touchphone, so I go with the easiest (read: shortest) way of writing things. Not always very accurate. I was supposed to say that "if you read history books", you'll find that America is more often the denomination of the continent (depending on the subject matter, of course, but to a greater degree than in above literature). Conversely, last semester we did have an American history book (college level) in a class on Ancient Greece, and it contained a lot of references and comparisons to "our society" and US culture, which was very amusing and really stood out.

I am Norwegian and I read Norse history before going to sleep every single evening, so I'm not really sure what you are referring to..? :D

Also you're right! I should have written "biggest", but my English can't always make up its mind, especially not when I'm sitting on the loo. I meant "of largest size". I hope my infuriating errors did not cause too much troubling bowel movements or upset. Try some septic imperialist tea.

Unless your phone is hijacked you're referring to GSM comm.

GSM continuously sends and receives "hi guys I'm here" to/from cell towers in order to maintain a connection (and be usable as a phone for both in/out calling) and keep track of time.

The empty space in these numerous messages is what's used for SMS AFAIK. I read a great white paper PDF on this when those CCC guys announced the GSM rainbow table project a few years ago. Sorry if some of the details are wrong.

Get a dumb phone and don't insert the battery until you need it. Newer phones can have internal power to keep GSM in communication without a buttery (I've seen it in 3G modems as well). Of course, you can only call out or accept calls at a period of time previously agreed on with this configuration.
