  4. DSLAM and Auth Server on Ask Slashdot: Best Wi-Fi Solution For a Hotel? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Setup your own DSL network using existing RJ11/Phone cabling.

You will place dsl modems in each area you want access points.

You can even have all rooms or some premium rooms with hidden away dsl modems and a network cable coming out.

You just need to setup a dslam after the modem and configure routing.

You would want a login interface so users have to accept terms and conditions.

Using the dsl method, you can setup access points at whatever strength seems secure enough wherever there is a phone connection or wiring, and you can splice the wiring if necessary.  You will need to place cheap filters on every normal phone connection, but that is a minimal cost.

You can also look at ethernet over power line, but there are lots of variables and speed issues that makes this not ideal.

  5. Burst-Based shaping skews results on The FCC Says ISPs Aren't Hitting Advertised Speeds · · Score: 3, Insightful

Most of the providers who hit their advertised speeds implement a burst-based traffic shaping.

For example, Comcast does full or over-full speed for first 10mb down and 5mb up.

It's nice that speedtest sites like speedtest.net show a graph of how speed changes, but their test sizes are still far to small and should exclude any detected burst speeds.

The only good way to test this is to actually transfer files and exclude the bursts.

Another thing that SHOULD be tested is the speed difference with single threaded transfers and segmented/multi-threaded transfers for both same continent and cross-seas.

Internet speed is relative and that is part of the problem.

So basically I learned how to properly name and refer to things in a way that management would NOT understand.

I am all open to knowledge, however the academic systems are unable to keep up with their current models.

A 12 year old reading up on the internet and letting their natural curiosity set them on their journey for knowledge while having someone to chat with who is more progressed in their journey will learn more and actually understand it, instead of being a memorization or boxed in college student.

All a degree is a piece of paper that say you have some background in this field and you are capable of learning to meet the minimal expectations of your professors.

Please note, I was not a slacker in college, I got 3 degrees in 5 years time and had an overall GPA of 3.8.
