Remember when baner ads first started creeping up on websites? A somewhat benign way of advertiseing that didn't get in the way of your info....but look not at the major game sites: IGN, Gamespy, Gamespot, etc...you can't go 2 clicks without either an ad page or one of those obnxious expanding ads or pop-ups. Its gotten so bad that we need software to prevent it from flooding our desktops.
What I'm worried about with games is that I can image something similar if left unsupervised. Streaming ads over a HUD, or ad paged after loading a game level. I would hope that these are my own little nightmares, and that many publishers will not subscribe to this type of advertiseing. But What of Fox interactive, Sony, or Warners Bros., companies that span various media and therefore have more incentive to advertise their products?
I just hope that if/when this starts up, its kept in control...
Try some of those that are more 'indie friendly'. Garagegames, Mstrix games, Dreamcatcher, JoWood(well, maybe not them).
I think its a good idea to give a bit more love to the smaller publishers, be integral in their growth and see where that leads interms of financial success and noteriety....
I really don't see why this is even an issue with people. First off, no one is "forcing" anything on anyone. the second paragraph of the article states:
A growing number of people in the booming industry believe there should be more black and Hispanic heroes and heroines instead of hoods and hoodlums
Who's being forced to do anything? And if there were more Black and Hispanic heroes in games, would that even matter? Would you play Splinter Cell if Sam Fischer(sp?) were black? Would it make a difference to you if Master Chief took off his helmet and he was Hispanic? None of the roles these guys play take race as a factor in the game, as don't many others...so what difference does it make if this or other future games have more diverse characters? If you're gonna play a game regardless of what color the character is, or gender, then why is this even a discussion?
I will admit that I do prefer games that at least let you pick your own features, and I don't have a problem if there are more diverse characters as our icons. Odds are if no one sid anything, none of you would really notice...
The game industry needs an advocacy group, or maybe have a lobbyist or perhaps buy off a senator:P
Seriously, you don't see gun manufacturers targeted like you might have in the past. Anyone remember that video of those Columbine kids with a small arsenal shooting trees in the woods? Anyone try to trace back where they got those guns and hold them as responsible as Doom??
These grieving families get counciled by layers that tell them to sue the video game companies, and defense lawyers use it as a defense tactic...not much different than what they tried to do to rock, when some kids commited suicide after playing a Judas Priest record backwards...or with rap when this guy shot a state trooper and blamed it on Tupac b/c he was listening to one of his songs in the car.
The game industry has always had its level of releative violence, even before Mortal Kombat. IMO the main problem is that the industry has become more visible and mainstream, and it has no real protection against people like this guy Thompson trying to rage his own little war.
On the other side, Rockstar's recent actions don't help matters...the explicitness (or lack of) the content is not the point. Their dishonsty makes an organization like the ESRB look ineffective. Additionally, it doesn't help when you have fools commiting murder over virtual property. You don't give the enemy anything to hold over you, regardless of whether you think its inconsequential. If they can use it, that's a problem.
Morrowind 4: Oblivion most definitely for me...
I'm curious about F.E.A.R., mainly because Monolith makes good games generally.
I thought the Quake4/Unreal2K7/Huxley/Gears of War stuff looked nice, but pretty much all the same...basically going onto my demo list.
Ah, I;m kinda looking at Spore as well.
Just thought I'd remind ya'll....
Weeeeell, there is this movie...with a reasonably-busted redhead, made by this german doctor....
