  5. Look behind the headlines on Yahoo China has the Worst Filtering Policy · · Score: 5, Informative

Yahoo may not intentionally be setting a strict policy towards censorship. You have to consider how the Chinese state is run. The Communist Party is an exclusive group of members who actively recruit in order to increase their influence over the population.

During China's rapid economic growth as a result of foreign investment and a move towards a free market economy, the Communist Party was unable to cope with the rapidly changing environment and failed to make the transition into this environment and continued to recruit amongst traditional areas of the Chinese economy.

Thus this created serious problems since Communist Party penetration in privately owned companies to less than one percent. This generated tremendous amounts of fear within the organization since they realized that they were falling behind on the times and needed to aggressively recruit from the educated portions of the population.

Without new recruits within the new economy, the hold of the Communist Party on the population would be significantly weakened. A significant problem since the Communist Party's right to rule is derived from mostly propaganda and peer pressure. Few people feel like protesting the government because Chinese culture derives it's strength through strength by numbers. Belonging to a group is especially important to Chinese people and by going against the government, you suffer severe consequences socially, economically, etc.... You can easily see how the lack of Communist Party members within the richest and most profitable portions of the workforce could become a problem.

One of the reasons why Communist Party membership penetration amongst the workforce was so low in privately owned businesses was because of a lack of recruitment amongst the intellectuals in the country. The educated group has always been shunned by the Communist Party throughout it's existence (ie Cultural Revolution/Tianamen/Hundred Flowers Campaign). However, when Communist Party members began to leave their posts to work for private corporations, the party was forced to change and the Communist Party began significantly recruiting from intellectuals. Since this movement started, Communist Party penetration has now grown to the 5-6% range within privately owned companies (although many neglect their duties and fail to pay their dues).

My bet is that the Communist Party specifically targeted Yahoo when they were recruiting for new Communist Party members in order to create an internal system to maintain control and ensure that Yahoo, as a foreign privately owned company, wouldn't go too far out of line of Communist Party doctrine. There isn't much that Yahoo can do as a foreign company can do to change the internal culture of their Chinese employee workforce. You can't fight against the Chinese government.

Actually those boring lectures actually help kids learn to program. During high school the math classes never interested me and the problems were easy to solve so I spent all my time programming. I ended up programing multiplayer monopoly, then an ai for it, clue, a Escape Velocity Override knockoff and then a really really simple version of Sim City. I programmed quite a few math programs as well...finding the angles/sides of the triangle, Riemann Summs,

You'd be surprised at the percentage that I believe that the percentage that learn to program on the graphing calculators is pretty high. Perhaps the most common program people write ask their friends to show them how to write, is the quadratic formula program. The next common way people learn to program is by editing existing graphing calculator games (so they can program cheats/modifiers)...which gets them to start getting into more stuff.

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but the energy giants are purposely keeping prices inflated. There are dozens of other options to fulfill the energy needs of the world, but they refuse to invest in them. People always look at alternative energy as the solution, but it's not. Currently, one of the most efficient engines man has invented is the gasoline engine which I believe (not sure) gets about 20-30% efficiency (don't remember exact number). One of the great things about gasoline engines is that when you need more power...you just step on the gas. Currently, solar panel technology only gets about 5-6% efficiency. At that amount, even if you covered the entire United States with solar panels from east coast to west coast...that still wouldn't be enough to fulfill our energy needs.

A lot of people point to ethanol as a solution. I agree it'll help the problem...but there is another solution which few venture to talk about. During WWII, Germany was cut off from the oil reserves in southern Russia. In order to cope with the problem, they ended up converting coal into oil/gasoline. This was a very expensive process, but it was better than no oil/gasoline at all. Today, the process is a lot cheaper (roughly $40 per barrel...from insider oil industry documents). Unfortunately, none of the major oil companies have pushed this at all. Mainly because they want to maximize their profits...without thinking about the social costs. Look at Exxon Mobil...in the last 4 years, despite a massive expansion in profit taking, it's only contributed less than 0.01% of their total revenue towards alternative energy.

Unfortunately the oil industry continues to push drilling in Alaska as an option to reduce our oil dependancy. But, only a select few realize that previous estimates on the total size of the Alaskan oil reserve are that its slightly less than one month's worth of the world's total oil needs today. That is a sizeable amount...but only a temporary reprieve since China's oil demands are growing tremendously and would greatly counter the price drop as a result of opening of the Alaskan oil reserves.

What we have now in the oil indsutry is a massive oligopoly and it needs to be broken down. There's no reason why in an industry with such MASSIVE profits...there aren't more competitors. It was a huge mistake for the government to allow all these aquisitions/mergers in the last few years of oil companies and now we see the results of those actions. Congress needs to break down the oil companies, make it easier for market entry and stop giving oil companies with massive profits subsidies.

Yes but that higher payrate also gives them more weight to pressure you to buy things you don't need to buy. My friend used to work at Best Buy and used to brag in high school about all the commission he was making because all these old people who didn't know what they were doing would come up to him for help and he'd make them buy things they didn't even need.

One of my professors (Larry Selden) shaped their business model to focus and prey on people who had loads of money and didn't know anything about computers. He was able to increase Best Buy's profit by just ignoring the lower end of the market which is probably one of the reasons why the Best Buy sales people didn't help them as much as the other retailers. He changed Best Buy's strategy to ignore "demon" customers. These are customers who tie up a salesworker but never buys anything, or who buys only during big sales. Or one who files for a rebate, then returns the item. Th people at [H] would have fit this description...and is the reason why they didn't help them at all.

Looking at the temperature graphs, I think the bigger message from the testing is that it isn't necessary to spend the extra cash on buying non-stock cooling. You can even get away with non-stock cooling if you're overclocking.

Rather than spending cash on changing the stock cooling, consumers would be better off spending that $50 on getting better ventilation for their case since recently, the biggest producer of heat /noise in the computer is the video card, not the processor. Currently my AMD 3500+ (overclocked from 2.2->2.6ghz on stock cooling) is running at 37C while my gpu at non 3d is running at 57C and will approach 87C when using graphically intensive applications. Typically gpu coolers are built thinly...so in order to make up for the smaller room to work with cooling wise, the fans are run at very high rpm. This also makes the video card the noisiest thing in the machine.

SLI boosts video performance by using two graphics cards for one monitor. Initially touted as being able to drastically increase video performance (frames per second/anti aliasing/anisotropic filtering) users soon found that SLI was only useful for boosting the performance of high resolution monitors (past 1280x1024). In fact, having an SLI setup for 1280x1024 or less will decrease your performance compared to having just one of those cards since the time necessary to divide the gpu workload starts to have an adverse affect with lower resolutions.

Most people who shop for video cards now advocate avoiding SLI, since it is cheaper to by a more expensive graphic card than buying two graphics cards one generation down (a single 7800gt will outperform 2x6800gts in SLI and a single 7800gtx will even outperform 2x7800gt's).
