Well in the US we wouldn't have this happen thanks to the FCC who would label such things "obscene". In fact, they'd probably mandate a return to black and white color in order to fuzzy the details and relevant body organs/openings;).
By just plougging it into a wall outlet or would it have to be a specialized type of power circuit? If it can be plugged in and still provide that same amount of power it'd be a really cool way of upgrading normal outlets.
Does anyone have a good site for explaining the Tesla coil besides Wikipedia? Much as I love it I just can't bring myself to trust it for engineering type things, and as I have a interest in it and am potentially majoring in electrical engineering I need a site with good information:).
I just got it at a local jewelers. Many many jewelers carry tungsten rings but there are somethings to look out for. Number one, make sure the ring is actual tungsten carbide and not tungsten with a cobalt alloy. Cobalt is cheaper so some ring makers put it in there but it takes some of the quality and strength out of the ring. Secondly, make sure that the company you buy it from has a lifetime warranty on damage or scratching. Tungsten carbide bands from good shops usually will offer a guarantee on scratching or bending out of round. Finally, yes it is a mirror finish but the metal looks similar to stainless steel so it's not a briliant type of shine as with silver. Still very nice looking though. They use diamonds to polish it and so the finish stays on quite well.
Other than that if they meet those qualifications buy it and enjoy never having to take it off:)
For my everyday working life and activities, I wear a plain 6mm tungsten carbide ring my girlfriend gave to me. I love it, I never have to take it off no matter what I'm doing, have worn it for more than a year now with no scratches or any sort of defect other than needing a quick soaping up and polish with a cloth to get it back to mirror finish.
I do have a diamond ring that used to belong to my grandfather but I only wear it on very special occasions or if I'm going out somewhere nice occasionally. I liked the Tungsten carbide specifically because it was durable, look great, and lasted many years without having maintenance really
But as for me I know my day wouldn't be complete without an announcement of yet "more" spyware that can be freely stuck on my PC or those of my "users"
Thank you AOL. Really. I mean it:).
I should say voluntary metric only labelling instead of the current dual units labels. It's already legal in all 50 states to have metric only labels but not yet at the federal level.
If I remember right by 2010 all Imperial units within the UK will lose their legal status except for the mile and a couple of others for public safety reasons so you never know. Maybe they'll switch to SI before the 2012 Olympics. Also there's an EU directive that says by 2010 any imports into the EU must be weighed and the package contents must be displayed in metric only, so that means that current US companies will have to have two product lines unless the US passes the law permitting voluntary metric labelling. 2010 might see another step forward in the progress of this.
There would actually be several advantages. Number one, it would remove barriers to trade that some companies currently are facing. Switching to metric will ensure that every country is using the exact same measures to ship goods . You may not want to believe it but by keeping those old measures around we spend billions annually with no real justification for it other than tradition. Billions in package labeling and everything else just so that Americans can stay wrapped up in their little non metric world bubble.
Secondly, not being metric puts the US at a huge disadvantage because so many fields are using the metric system. I've run into countless medical, engineering, and other professionals in dozens of fields who have told me it was really annoying not having a good grounding in SI taught in schools, because it made them have to spend extra time relearning it all once they got into their chosen careers.
Another advantage would be the rational speed limits and distances. 5280feet to the mile may sound perfectly rational to you, but for me I'd like nice rounded base ten numbers.
And as far as everything in the world being "boredomized" as you put it. This is one thing, this doesn't mean the US is any less American. Seriously, less American because we adopted a measureing system that makes sense? And if you're looking to stop it you may be to late. around 90 percent of everything bought and sold in the US is already done in metric originally. they may slap a inch label on it but deep down it's there:)
I know I'll probably get flamed out of existence for saying this but here goes. It'd be nice if the entire Interstate was signed in nice rational metric units instead of tenths of a mile. Yes yes I know "this is America and we use miles" and all that other crap but honestly people. Time to move on.
And yes I know that a lot of highway departments were dumb and switched back to designing in inches and feet once the mandate to design in SI was lifted but that shows incredible shortsightedness and poor planning. The change "will" happen, and the more people drag their heels the less time we have to do it quickly and efficiently.
It's time to put that mandate back into place and drag America into the 21st century. Yes it will cost money and yes people will bitch about speed limit signs changing for all of a month until they get used to it.
Almost every other country in the world has switched and been perfectly fine. I'm sure we will to.
Yeah I saw that just as I posted. I guess im relegated to the netcast because the satellite is down at my place . Nasty weather. But still at least I can watch it:)
I loved playing soccer when I was in highschool. There was something simplistic about the game and yet fun. I for one would love to watch all the World Cup matches but unfortunately ESPN isn't carrying them (unless I'm misreading the schedule) and as has been mentioned before the BBC is only for UK residents so I guess I'm out of luck:(.
Also mandate that it's compulsary to have your ID on you at all times? Or is it mainly compulsory to have it if you're going on a bus/plane/train ?
I for one have absolutely no problem with showing ID to police or other goverment entities if it's required. Nor would I have a problem with CCTV being implemented on a large scale within the US as I have no expectation of privacy while outside my own home anyway.
I'd love to do that, but if I recall "Right to work" states allow employers the right to fire you for refusing to work more hours. Could be wrong though.
Now where I work (Large US electronics retail store who shall remain nameless)full timers are given *exactly* 40 hours per week and if you stay longer you had better have a good reason, because after that you go into overtime. The ideal weekly budget for hours has full timers working 30-40 hours per week, part timers working 4-24 hours/week, and managers pushing 60+ hours/week. Although management is salaried so it doesn't matter as much as for us hourly workers.
This employer also has it written into our contracts that they will never guarantee more than 4 hours/week to any employee, even full timers.
Needless to say I'm glad I have other sources of income besides this job.
In general though , I believe it is severly frowned upon in corporate America if you refuse to not work more hours as you are not being "A team player", and I'm sure that doing so would cause you to be on many managers blacklists . Sad but true fact of life.
I'm assuming these chips will retain the standard DIMM shape? And if so, how would it benefit me by dropping it into say a current motherboard? Just the ability to have very fast page reads and storage? Will it really be of benefit to consumers or more for servers?
Oh someone that works the same place I do. Nice to know I have company. I just *can't* wait for *cough*Green Friday*cough*. All those happy shoppers wanting their RAM upgrades for free, their computers customized in ten seconds, etc etc etc.
At least breakfast and lunch are provided for the employees so when I drag in at 4 in the morning I'll have a donut to look forward to.
As someone with Aspergers syndrome I have to both agree and disagree with this. It's true that I can lose interest in some subjects in favor of ones I do well in (Science, maths,English, and history).
At the same time however, if I want to I'm able to memorize facts that are in other fields if a need arises. It's helped a lot because I'm able to scan quickly the text of a paragraph or a lecture and pick up the basic points and from there I can use common sense and do well on the tests. Being able to basically set your brain on record helps lots in school:)
As a total aside here, I think the first clue we had about my AS was when my mom had a friend and her husband visit us. He installed PBX systems for large businesses in NYC. In the course of the conversation he was detailing one of the installs and using all the technical terms that had his wife's eyes glazing over. After he was done, I proceeded to repeat back to him word for word what he said and then discuss it with him. I was eight at the time. Does that make me gifted? I don't know, but it's sure handy to have.
I say we let them add their litle time change BUT with the condition that all road signage and measurement in the US be first in English and metric units and eventually only in metric.
I mean my God, I deal with people on a daily basis where I have to constantly convert values because they dont understand what a mile is:). If we're standardizing time, lets standardize measurements too.We don't have to do it all at once, gradual phase in over say ten years is fine. And put a provision in there that something bad will happen to said scientists and government officials who fail to comply in that ten year period so that they are forced to stick to it.
Just my $.02
This story really swings me in favor of either abolishing state and federal income tax altogether and replacing it with a national sales tax or aboloshing state and local income taxes in favor of having the federal government have one income tax and be done with it, preferably one where every person is taxed at an equal rate. I bet if they were to institute a national sales tax and get rid of the income tax, they'd have as much money if not more because people will buy more things and as a consequence pay more taxes on those goods. I know I for one can think of plenty of ways I'd like to use the money that is taken out for income taxes.

I'd say flaccid is a good way of describing Microsoft ;).

Oops. Forgot to put some spaces in :) . Sorry long day.

Are you sure about that ? this IS Microsoft after all ;). If anyone can compromise an OS surely it's them.

As if millions of /.ers suddenly cried out in terror, and we're suddenly silenced :).
I know lame but someone had to say it .
That I'm worried about is the one we will probably bring on ourselves by our stupidity and unwillingness to listen and work with those around us.
That was it . I was confused :). Thanks for clearing that up.
