That's the great thing about it: absolutely nothing. Most tape systems only store information in one dimension, so the amount of space you get on one a cassette depends on the length of the tape. The thickness is determined by what is physically practical.

And of all 3 early Video systems, Video 2000 was considered the best.

Next, even if the numbers are well into the systems lifetime, they're just a stupid and erroneous number, that just shows they either want to maximise the number they can boast about, or a really that out of touch with the consumer

Wrong. Some of it is quite different, some of it is very similar to earlier movements. The way you just to put "real" classical music into one pot shows how you simply have no Idea of the variety of different approaches in classical music.

This will be over as soon as enough parents discovered that most of the music is just junk, despite of being played by an orchestra and as soon as the young discover that this isn't even the original.

Think of how much this applies to your favourite songs/musical style.

  8. Re:Nintendo on Which Rechargeable Batteries Do You Use? · · Score: 1

I haven't seen them say that anywhere, and even so it would be stupid to buy new batteries for every 35 hours (that's how long they say it lasts)
A rechargeable cell doesn't do anything different than a primary alkaline battery. It provides a voltage that the device can use for electrical power. In fact, the voltage of an alkaline cell drops very quickly to the 1.2V of a NiMH cell, and continues to drop below that. So most of the time you will probably get less voltage from an alkaline battery.
The different discharge voltages will give a false charge reading if the system is designed to only give the charge of alkaline batteries. That's why the indicator on my Wii remote stayed at two or three out of four, before it eventually died.

I don't know how they compare with battery life, because it always depends on the application. A typical alkaline battery apparently has an equivalent capacity of 3000 mAh, but that is only true for certain test circumstances.
An alkaline cell deteriorates significantly when it discharges, compared to the constant performance of a NiMH battery. So for example digital cameras, which need high currents, it might not be able to use alkaline batteries which still have a significant amount of charge. From what I've heard, cameras will typically last up to twice as long with high capacity rechargables compared to alkaline cells.
I should think the Wii remote is pretty similar, as I have only recharged the batteries once so far. I hope Nintendo can do some kind of update for the remote to give more accurate readings for rechargabes, it should be at least possible.

When I look at the fairplay DRM, it really seems to do the best thing for what I want to use, whith the one exception of only being compatible with iPods.
I get to know how the system works, and where there are restrictions. Some things that I find good comnpared to other systems:

    1) I can copy and backup the files wherever and on whatever I want. It's a simple file, of which I can see the details. To listen to it, the machine has to have been registered with the account you bought it with, and you can register 5 computers. If you have it registered, you can play it as often as you like.
Other systems don't give you access to the files, and you can only copy them or move them with a special program the way the manufacturer intended.

    2) I don't "use up" any of the tunes by listening to them, or when burning them to a CD. Some others do.

    3) iTunes will clearly show you which songs have DRM, and which don't. It will let you play unprotected MP3s or AACs that you ripped or got from anywhere without trying to inspect the source or slapping it's own DRM everywhere.

I haven't had too much experience with WMA files, so I suppose some of the things I said might not be applicable for some (but as far as I know, Sony's system does all of that)(WMA has, I believe, different "levels" of protection).
But as long as I still have my account, I know I will always be able to play the songs I purchased from iTunes, and I do feel relatively in control.

No, the point is that the US says a foot is so many meters.
Whereas metric units are defined by physical constants in the Universe. A meter is defined by the distance light travels in a vacuum in a certain time, whilst the second is defined by the time it takes for some chemical reaction. They're still working on an absolute definition of the kilogram, last I heard, but you get the idea.
So, as measurements become more accurate, you still have a reliable definition of the unit.

And units aren't made up either. In the SI-system, you have a few base units: kilogram, meter and second, plus ampere, for electricity. These are of course slightly arbitrary. But out of those three units you can derive basically all other physical Units.
As for electron-Volts, it's pretty simple: e is a physical constant. Take the reciprocal value, and you have your answer. There are 6.204x10^18 electron-volts in one joule.

There's a reason Panasonic are pushing Plasmas: That's their main market. If you want a Plasma, go for Panasonic, whereas you're best to go with Samsumg for LCD. It doesn't make them unbiased just because they do make a few LCDs too.

You can tell how useless their claims are when they come with shit like "LCD's are all right in kitchens", or that LCD's "cannot reproduce the full range of colors in a HDTV broadcast".

Then they come with some blatently false claims such as that Plasma's are environmentally freindly (they are the biggest electricity-guzzlers in consumer-electronics history), or that Plasmas have better viewing angles.

LCD's don't fade with time, and don't suffer from burn in. That's good for me.

The difference is that when humans exhaust carbon dioxide, it is from a source in the planets carbon cycle. For every molecule of glucose you burn, which contains six carbon atoms, a plant has converted six molecules of CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. So the net output is zero.
It would work the same if everyone were to use biofuels to drive around in too.

The problem is when you use mineral fuels, which have been stored by the planet for millions of years, and suddenly release them in the atmosphere.
The more we can limit the burning of fossil fuels, the better it is for CO2-levels.

VHS movies were expensive. When DVDs started offering a huge catalogue of films for reasonable prices, sales skyrocketed.
Online music stores offered single songs to customers at reasonable prices, and were hugely successful.
But wait, that means that they can no longer sell $15 dollar albums, that have one good and the rest is just filler. So they started with this "the whole album is a work", and selling a song on it's own would rip everything apart, so the good songs are "album only".
