While I am sure India would like to have a deterrant against China and Pakistan in a military context, satellites in India have been put to good use. Most of rural India can get accurate weather forecasts that helps them figure out when to plant, and harvest their crops. It also predicts weather patterns and climate changes. Television and other broadband communication is also possible. India has several satellites in orbit. The Geosynchronous satellites were all designed and made in India but were launched from French Guyana (typically) from a EU made rocket. With India getting better at making launch vehicles, they could build and launch satellites on their own as well as provide launch support for other countries. I am glad they are doing this and I am glad that gives hope and aspirations to generations of Indians. Remember, hope and aspirations count for a lot in the betterment of a country.

Google HP z556 and you will see what I mean. But they were quite expensive and that is why HP is discontinuing them (lack of demand). Sony has a competitor too. It is their XL2 and XL3. Some of them are close to 720p like 1366x768, 1024x768, etc. They are also very cheap compared to computer monitors. A 30" Dell LCD monitor is like $1300. A 30" LCD TV is like $500. Take a look at the program guide for any day in any of the major networks (Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC). All primetime shows are in HD. Not just upconverted. Even the late night talk shows are in HD. Many sports programs are in HD. Even Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are in HD (these are syndicated shows - not all stations show in HD, my local station does though!!). Then, google can write desktop equivalents for windows while Apple writes all the Mac desktop specific stuff (with google input). So, Picasa integrates with iTV on the PC side, iPhoto integrates with iTV on the Mac side, you get the idea. Now, that Apple is trying to expand beyond the mac market share, products like the iTV, any future iPods, iPhones should be able to integrate with Windows as well as Macs. Google can probably help with this. Content management works well for Google.

I don't think that is true. I was told that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is going to support both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors of both x86 and PPC architectures. So, it will be a quad-architecture universal binary. Even the runtime libraries will have four different flavors. The kernel will have four different flavors. 32-bit apps will link with 32-bit runtime libraries, while 64-bit apps will link with 64-bit libraries. So, both 32-bit and 64-bit apps can happily run together. Overall, more RAM and more HD space will be needed. Unlike 64-bit windows, Mac OS X will be more compatible with mixed apps. Not too many people run 64-bit windows because of lack of apps and drivers. Leopard is not going to have that limitation.

I have this Sony HD-DVR and love it. It suits me best because I don't subscribe to cable or satellite. I have OTA antenna and this box gets its program guide through the local PBS analog carrier wave. There are no monthly fees. The interface I was told is not as elegant as Tivo but it works. I bought this box for $499 and it is mine to keep - there are no monthly fees and this box has amazing HD quality. It also has a cable card slot if I want to get encrypted cable. It has a QAM tuner for unencrypted cable. However, Sony has canceled this model and they have not replaced it with a newer one. I think there was not a big market for this because most people that want a DVR got them through satellite company or cable company. For me, this is not feasible because I don't want to subscribe for cable or satellite.

Also, remember, in addition to eliminating gas, there are no oil changes and disposal every 3000-5000 miles. The only oil in that is the tranmission fluid I believe. So, the environmental impact of changing oil also goes away with this car.

Don't fault the $90k price tag of the Tesla EV. It is a roadster meant to compete on driveablility merits against the likes of Porche, Ferrari, etc. It does 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds and has great braking and handling. It performs better than the competition even if you don't take into account the fact that it is a plugin electric. On top of that, it gets a range of 250 miles and costs the equivalent of 1 to 2 cents / mile. The batteries will last longer than 100k miles. So, treat this car as a fun to drive roadster for the wealthy yet green minded consumers. It is a start. Tesla has said they are already working on a sedan. However, since the sedan will be heavier and not enough space for the batteries, the range might be lower, but they are hoping that improved battery technology will close the gap. I have big hopes for companies like Tesla. Not everyone needs a vehicle that can drive across the country and just fill up on the way. Many people just commute.
