Really, I don't think this will lead to as rampant piracy as everyone thinks -- the jailbreak dongle allows easy piracy, the 3.55 FW hack requires actually cracking the game executable to remove disc checks and redirect IO from /dev_bdvd to /dev_hdd0 (which frankly any multiplayer game should do a hash check on it's executables anyways, which would catch that).

That just means the 3.55+ game downloads/torrents will already be cracked. Not everyone will have actual disc in hand trying to make a "backup".

The games would be on external drives and copied to whatever internal drive you currently have. Once you start filling up the internal drive you start deleting ones you don't play as often, but they still reside on the external drive. External drive space is cheaper.

Referring to the game purchase system possibly? signing in to PSN is required for multiplayer of all games (not insinuating that you didnt know this). Single player limits the replay value of games so multiplayer is a big factor to the average ps3 owner especially if they play games that are focused to online use. They could even take a page from Ubisofts book and put "internet connection required" on there games.

Replay value is irrelevant when it involves free/pirated games. If they start banning from PSN and you really must play online you would either: risk it and play on your modded PS3, get the 360 version, or get another PS3 for online play and buy the game. Those with banned 360s typically have another clean system for Live and buy the multiplayer game of the day (COD or Halo). It doesn't take many pirated games to save enough money to buy a new system (~5 @ $60).

Most of the downloads aren't even huge. Most cross console ports are on par with the 360 games, about 8 GB. I saw a download for GT4 and it was only 23 GB. Still, they would most likely be stored on HDD and not Blu-ray discs. It is just that the download size isn't going to be much of an issue with a decent internet connection.

IIt's not that Sony haven't put a lot of time and effort into improving the PSN - it is certainly far better than it used to be - but it still feels like something that sits off to the side a bit from the PS3's main functionality, while a 360 without Xbox Live feels fundamentally incomplete.

You mean you don't fire up the PS3 and go straight to PS Home? (Does that even still exist?)

"I buy warranties on most devices, and always pay for at least $10 of the device using my Visa card as well (even when financed otherwise), so I get the additional 1 year warranty extension from them." Whenever I've had to make a claim on my Visa for extended warranty protection (Harmony remote, laptop, external HDD) they require that you pay in FULL with the credit card. On one item I had used a $25 gift card plus my Visa and they almost didn't cover any of it. I had to prove to them that the $25 card was from Visa reward point redemption. After that they deducted the gift card amount from the total reimbursible expense. I don't see your $10 rule working unless you have a special Visa card that most people don't have access to. I now make a point to not use gift cards for expensive items that may need replaced. Better to use them for consumables or media.

I've used this a few time already on my Visa. It worked out well and it give up to an extra year on a product purchased in full with the card. You submit the receipt, product warranty, and credit card statement show the purchase along with the cost of repair or replacement. They will send you a check for the lesser of either the original purchase price or repair/replacement cost. I've replaced a Harmony 890 remote twice using this warranty, a dead external HDD, and had a laptop repair after its warranty had expired. One thing that I found interesting was that the Circuit City (R.I.P.) Visa card that you used for the not interest purchases was eligible for the warranty coverage. I would turn down their warranty and tell them that I'm already getting an extra year using their card.

I said that the gamerscore earned "since the ban" is lost. Your gamerscore/gamertag is now frozen at the point of your last Live connection prior to the ban. You can't officially earn any more points until you recover on a legit console. Anything that you do on your banned console is now stuck on your banned console.
Not that this is the end of the world, but it is to some people. If you earn 5,000 GS points since being banned the only way to show it off is to bring your buddies to your house and show them on your banned console. If you try to recover your gamertag from the banned console it will appear corrupt and you'll have to revert to the one saved on Live prior to your ban.

So what? The HD install feature only exists to speed up load times, you still need the original disc in the drive to play. That is, if you haven't modded the box. See where they're going with this? If you modded your box you're still perfectly able to play any legitimate game discs you happen to have.

No, I don't see where you are going with that. You can continue to play pirated or legitimate games with a banned 360, but you can no longer use the HDD install feature. IMO, the HDD install is primarily used to silence the jet engine DVD drive. Not a big lose, but just something else to annoy those that got banned. Prior bannings simply kicked your console off of Live.
