I don't think the earth is 6000 years old, either, but I'm sick to death of hearing this exact same joke repeated again and again and again every time something even remotely tied to the distant past is brought up on Slashdot. I guarantee we'll see the exact same joke told at least a half dozen times here.

Ha ha ha! Oh gosh that's funny! That's really funny! Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. "Everyone knows that the earth is only 6000 years old". You know, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Hmm. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that on Slashdot before. Because that's what the religious people say in church right? Isn't it? "The earth is only 6000 years old". And, and yet you've taken that and used it out of context to insult people who are different than you in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart person you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw out there as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity?

    God you're so funny!

Languages evolve over time, and the previous generation always have the sense that the next generation is somehow speaking the language wrong. Your parents probably thought that there was something wrong in the way you talked as well. If you went to shakespeare's time, I'm sure people would think that you were some kind of idiot who couldn't speak properly. The thing is, that english is *improving* not getting worse. Languages change in response to changing concepts, and the addition of new terminology.

I have to step in and defend the original poster here. His beef has nothing to do with language evolving; it has to do with today's students frequently writing incomprehensible gibberish. I, too, am horrified by the amount of "simian grade" English out on the web. No, I'm not talking about 1337 5p34k or simple spelling/punctuation errors (which can usually be understood by their context), but, rather, statements where there is such a chaotic dance between subjects and objects, verb tenses, and whatnot that a clear understanding of what is being said is impossible to achieve. No, actually I do. "2. to appropriate (ideas, credit, words, etc.) without right or acknowledgment." is not the same as making a copy of information. This definition refers to the act of passing off someone else's work as your own. That, in a sense, is "stealing" because the original creator is denied his rightful glory (for lack of a better word) since it is going to you instead.
