This is how my old school district did it. Everyone had a gig on a file server. You could FTP in, or if you were on the internal network you could connect with Windows and Macs using SMB.
Sounds wonderful. I remember bringing all my computer stuff over if I was going to a LAN party, and recall riding the bus along with a Sun Ultra (and later, the 21 inch monitor). It didn't hurt me none, and let me be proud of my geekness.
The debris are already up there. Thousands of pieces of junk from every space mission, every satellite, etc. The space shuttle comes back with pock marks because of the debris (I've seen photos of pits in the windshield!).
It's only a matter of time before there is a large collision with debris hitting debris, then we have a cloud of pulverised junk preventing anything from getting up there.
Hosting music like that would require forwarding ports. If it's just piggybacking on a connection, then that don't work (unless you have default passwords).
Many systems I've used (ok, so only my Linksys...) came with a first run CD like you're talking about. But, most people plug the hardware in and don't bother to do anything if it just works.
I blame Microsoft for having hardware drivers install by default. People aren't used to installing or running software in order to make something run correctly. (Of course, it's also Slashdot, so Microsoft is always something to blame).
How many people say "XP" instead of Windows XP?
Is this bound to be different with Vista?
Would this not be confusing for people, in some possible sense?
Similar, I'm lucky if I get my P4 to idle at 45, usually it's above 50. Peaks at around 70 (granted, that's when something has died and is taking all the CPU on windows.......)
Verizon is already doing this (part, at least), FIOS TV (check the FIOS TV clip in the corner - It also tells you how to pronounce Fios) is in the planning/prep stages (supposed to be rolled out later this year). It is meant to replace cable entirely, but with more interactivity...
Or connect to an IRC network with encryption?
These taps are useless for all except the idiotic. Any trained professional would be able to mask their activities.
Why... the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, of course!
Run Linux or run ON Linux?
If your GPU has an OS, you're in trouble.

No, that's "Riddikulus", but it only works on bogarts.

That's not typical geek.
Typical geek was up too late reading slashdot to do very well in school, and ends up passing with C's but knowing all the stuff.
You have no idea how right you are!

Come now, your girlfriend? I think you mean "The girl that I follow throughout the day"
Microsoft Linux

Umm... who said x86? Debian currently has precompiled apps for alpha, arm, hppa, i386, ia64, m68k, mips, mipsel, powerpc, and sparc...
Trillian supports jabber... (of course, you have to install the plugin)...
Why not get a generator with an electric motor plugged into a battery, and then use the generator to charge the battery and exceess for other use?

To fix my own mistake, "Quote is a verb...." ("a quote" is doing exactly what I said was wrong) ;)
Wrong, it is not called a quote. A quote is a verb, such as "Can I quote you?" or "To quote Janet Jackson..."
;)
The item being quoted is a quotation, which is a noun.
Sorry to go off on grammar, but I felt it was interesting for the sake of TFA
CNN did not use the word poo, it was a quotation of Dr. Bradford Gessner...

Yes.... any Pepsi or any other contest had free downloads, hence "MP3's to play in the iPod" (because iTMS songs play in iTunes/iPod)
