Most people who hear about this study or anything related to Internet Addiction are getting it from the Television... where they've been sitting for 4 hours. Addictive personalities?
You're not going to kill Microsoft by buying Xboxes. The more people that buy Xboxes, the more the word Microsoft is mentioned and spread. A great example of this is they're current marketing strategy with the 360. Instead of selling 40billion consoles the first day, they only shipped a fraction of their inventory. While this may seem ridiculous to some, it's exactly what they want. 40billion or 2 million, all the customers/news/readers hear (or read) is "SOLD OUT". Microsoft would rather keep this "SOLD OUT" message plastered in the media and a persons mind for 2-3 weeks rather than 2 days. To the average Joe Blow who isn't aware of their scheme (alot of people btw) this makes the Xbox 360 look like the product they need, or the console EVERYONE has, which to some translates to the best of the best. Now when Joe Blow goes to pick an software, what company is he going to remember?
If Tivo cuts to much into the profits, Tivo will find itself at the bottom of a river with cement shoes, or at least get severely nerfed. There is an abundance of money to be made of this. I wouldn't expect any easy way out to be along for very long.
I just wonder how long it will be until VCRs are stripped of their recording feature.
yeah, there weren't even that many people in the channel at all anyways. I think from the time I joined up, when it was still in the Mysterious future, it only gained about 200 users or so.
500 users in a single channel isn't really that impressive at all.:/ Oh well.
Here in Canada I've heard from various government employees who do computer forensics that they've been toying around with iLook. As with the above program, I doubt you'll get the demo or shareware anytime soon.:) http://www.ilook-forensics.org/
While this may be a bit off-topic, it's something that really needs to be brought to the attention of people, so please be fair.
What they actually need is less aid, and help creating less corrupt governments, along with a decent trade agreement with major countries. As horrible as it may sound, letting them fend for themselves could help them alot more in the long run. Before you go hating away, let me explain. Dropping food and clothes are only killing the agriculture and textile industries in Africa. If 10,000 shirts get dropped, then thats 10,000 less shirts that have to be made, and jobs lost. These people need an econonmy, and the more we send them for free, the less needs to be manufactured, and less jobs are created.
The best thing we could do is make create a decent trade agreement that didn't cost these people so much to export their goods to other countries. At the moment it costs so much to trade that they simply cannot.
Also most of the aid going to some of the "poorer" countries in Africa, never makes it to it's citizens. It's used by corrupt politicans to feed those loyal to keeping them in power, not to the people who actually need it.
I don't mean to attack you're statement that these people need help, but the problem is that many people don't even understand that a good deal of the help they need cannot be bought, and is not a material thing, but an idea, or a agreement.
Here we go, I can see it now. Soon enough I'll have to wade through a sea of EMO kids trying to get my copy of HL3 or Doom 18, having my tastes in game critiqued and told how I should really be playing "Indie Games" because thats where the "real talent" is.

I think Slashdot editors have finally gone of the deepend.
I was wondering who beat me out of the time machine on Ebay.
Don't forget the crystals Taco! THE CRYSTALS!

This isn't gonna be pretty. Might as well start some rumors about how she hates open-source and is a follower of Intelligent Design.
This really is a Double Edged Sword. If the police had taken this man down and he was found to be caring the said dangerous materials, then they would be heroes. If they hadn't and this situation occured, it would be CNN Presents: London Terror Revisited instead of CNN Presents: Hurricane Rita.
Officers have to make these judgements or people die. While I agree with most everyone here, that this sounds ridiculously extreme, and that perhaps the police should gather more evidence, or wait for proof, but they've been told to make those split-second decisions that affect the lives of many people. It's a difficult situation to call.Hindsight is always 20/20.
What should be being talked about here is the incident last month which resulted in someone being shot in the head 7 (or 8) times (Absolutely Ridiculous, I think "Police, STOP!" is a much better way to find someones intentions.
While I think it's fine for Police to investigate a potential suspect without proof or on "instinct", I don't feel that it's neccessary to use lethal force on a suspect (Go for the legs/knees at least).
It scares me that the UK is finally starting to get in line with the U.S. on their Fear bills. Scaring their citizens out of their rights to the point where people actually die because of it.
Oh, and by the way, we still have lots of land kicking around up here in Canada.:/
If tropical storms/depressions are gaining strength faster and with more intensity before they become hurricanes, shouldn't that affect how easily they can be broken up before they make landfall? And if they can't be broken up as quickly, does that not affect how long they sit in the Gulf/Atlantic churning, and growing?
Just sounds to me that whether you're flicking a match or holding a spot welder, if you put it near fuel it's gonna catch.
The Rolling Stones weren't the ones who sued Richard Ashcroft and the Verve first of all. It was there ex-manager Allen Klein from the 1960s who was awarded the rights to the song in a buyout deal the Stones made so they could have control over their own music.
Secondly, the Verve didn't rip off the Stones at all. They didn't even sample an actual Rolling Stones song, they sampled a re-arranged version of "The Last Time" done completely intstrumentally by the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra.
While it may seem like people make alot of money from CD sales, you'd be suprised that those people are not the artists. Having watched persons in major labels and people independantly, I can say that most artists make no where's near the 15$ or 20$ per cd that you may expect. It's more along the lines of 1$-2$ per cd (Depending on the contract). Most of an artists money comes from touring. The cd is a great advertisement for their concert dates.
The fact that the music is getting out there is alot more important to artists.
I'd rather have a kid joyfully spending 40-50$ on a concert ticket than trying to beat 20 bucks out of him so I can get my 2$ the record company says I'm entitled to. But thats just me.

RIAA retaliates with a request for sticky-tape legislation. 3M added to President Bush's "Axis of Evil".
Will someone please think of the Elephants?!
As funny as this is, I would really mod this Insightful.
Prescott Stonewash Jeans: An all new sense of Up-Time.
And somehow Bush will respond in a way that we all believe it.

I like my women like I like my whisky - 12 years old and mixed up with coke.
