Except for the part where your statement implies that Linux is a variant of Unix. GNU/Linux is a "Unix Clone" in that it acts like Unix but has absolutely no code in common with any variant of Unix, nor is it POSIX compliant, thus making it not Unix. In fact, in case you you didn't know GNU stands for "GNU's Not Unix".
If you're going to nitpick, make sure you don't leave yourself open to nitpicking.
I went straight from ICQ to MSN myself, never even tried AIM. My only interest in this is since now the AIM-rats will have something to do other than annoy me on IRC Channels, etc.
if by "most conventional TV's can only do 640x480" you mean "most conventional TV's can only do 320x240" then your post is pretty much accurate. Although I must say I liked the N64 controller, myself, and the PS2 one isn't bad, either.
I dunno, I have a PS2 and a GameCube, but i rarely use them (except to play Katamari Damacy or Super Smash Bros., of course). Graphics are definately the difference for me, why would I play a game on my TV when I could be playing it at 1600x1200 with 8x AA and trilinear filtering on my 21" CRT? The consoles are just for games that don't have a PC version for me.
Also, he could re-burn the XP cd with his driver on it (that's what I did, since my VIA Raid controller wasn't detected by windoze at all, i got a "No Hard Drives Detected" message). The fun part is that I can install linux without a hitch (i know, i know, its because its newer).
I dunno, I'm running Slack 10.1 on my 200MHZ P1 box that I got from DEC back in the day, and it works just fine. (Although i cant turn on all the glitzy animations in gnome and KDE.)
Now it takes a little while to boot up, but since Linux is so nice and stable, I can leave it runing almost indefinately (power consumption concerns aside).
Sadly, drive space is often occupied by pesky things called programs, and a substance known as data, so the quest for 100 movies on a drive really needs somewhere in the 100+ GB range.
You're talking like P4's and Sparcs are comparable by speed. I've seen way "slower" sparcs kick the crap out of P4's in benchmarks. While Sun's equiptment is certainly high in the price range, your "Twice as much for half the cost" thing is complete and utter BS.
Suffice it to say, I'm really liking the Sun Opteron offerings, because now one can actually vaguely compare the systems with, say, Dell or HP's, without running your own benchmarks on them (don't you love how companies only publish the particular benchmarks that their system performs best on *cough* IBM *cough*).
I myself think (hope) Sun will be around for the long run, and won't join those other awesome companies (i.e. DEC) that due to an outdated business model, fade away.
There are many things that we at sun cannot do ourselves, not having root acces, etc. to systems. We have to get the inept people in india to do things for us, and its most frustrating when you have to explain to them every single step of what to do.
I dunno, here in Canada, teachers need at least a backelor's degree in addition to going to teacher's college, and there are still oh so many horrible teachers. Although to be a teacher of a subject in high school, you need to have at least a certain number (not sure exactly how many) courses that you took in that field (i.e. an engineer would most likely be slated to teach math, physics, and possibly chemistry (and, yes, several of my teachers had engineering degrees)).
But I must say, for every good teacher I had, I must have had 2 inept ones (and my school was considered the best in the area, academically).
I wouldn't know, never having been the admin of a windows server (people use those?), but it is true occasionally for Linux (and even less frequently Unix) upgrades to cause random compatibility issues for programs.
And (for instance) I know many a person/company still running the 2.4.x Linux kernel, or using an older version of KDE or Gnome with a security vulnerability that they found another way to cover without patching or upgrading.
Except that alot of Mac hardware is shite, those big LCD's for example. Pixel burnouts are rampant, AND they're hella overpriced.

I think you're thinking of the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser.
it was a joke, sheesh
You know, there are 2 kinds of people I hate in this world, people who are intolerant of others' religions, and those goddamn Muslims.

you know, Unix is by no means a dead OS, Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix, and so is Solaris.
Since when can you get a computer for $400?? I spent $2500 building my new one.

Looks like Sun might finally be able to drag itself out of the hole it's got itself in, eh?

I used to love the old Battlestar Galactica, but I can't say I enjoy watching the new one. Stargate Atlantis, on the other hand...
It all depends on the application, of course, but I apologize for ranting there.

Sun's opteron offerings look promising, and so do their new lines that are slated to come out in the future (Niagara, for instance) http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/jonathan/2004091
I have root on my notebook, but not on the SunRay beside it.

( I miss DEC
Thank you for shooting down yet another idiot slashdotter.

As a Sun Employee, I must express that the Indian help desk workers are, in factm inept.
That said. I as an engineer, should learn to expect that others will not be as technically proficient as i would like them to be.
Is your sig a cheat code for TMNT 2 for the NES?

Yeah, and they should take your fingers for being a douchebag hacker.
(I say this because only the hackers who are douchebags ever get caught)
