As far as I can tell, Unix is still winning as an enterprise server OS, Between AIX and Solaris, there's a pretty nice chunk of Unix servers out there. (Not to mention IRIX or any other Unixes). Plus BSD's will never die, since the BSD licence >> than the GPL. Linux just was the "in" thing for nerds, and when the next OS fad comes along the article on here will be how windows killed Unix and Linux, but won't kill the resurgance of BeOS or something like that.
I must say, that was a most entertaining ad campaign, and Sun's new servers really do seem to be really, really good. It'd be nice to see Dell go down in the entry-level server space.
The thing I don't get is where this perception of the Cube being a complete failure came from. The Xbox didn't do much better at all than the GameCube. The only clear winner in the last round of the console wars was Sony.
The main reason why Sun doesn't mind drawing attention to Dell is that they know their new "Galaxy" servers kick the ass of what Dell currently offers. They're cheaper, faster, smaller, and use less power.
And I must say, I did find those ads most amusing at first, and even more so when i researched the benchmarks and found the statements to be (mostly) accurate.
Plus they're only making fun of Dell to point out that they're working to enter the low end space (which Dell controls) and that they now have comparable products to Dell's offerings in that area, not because they lack the brand recognition of Dell and are trying too "mooch off of the Dell name". Show me anyone in the IT industry who doesn't know about both Sun and Dell, and I'll show you a person who'll be first against the wall when the revolution comes.
I must point out that the entire point of capitalism is to avoid a monopoly, and that, in fact a monopoly is the worst possible state for capitalist growth. With a (full) monopoly, there's no reason to improve ones product/service, which leads to fewer jobs in the industry, finally resulting in no progress being made and a shitload of unemployed workers.
Capitalism demands competition for stability. Competition keeps prices low (or it would if companies didn't corroborate to raise prices *cough* Oil companies the world around *end cough*) and promotes progress. Think how much crappier windows would be today without the influences of Unix and Linux (and even OS/2).
No, really, I don't think there was a single piece of evidence (or even an example) supplied to support a single thing that guy said. How come these idiots get published when perfectly intelligent journalists are out there on the streets with signs saying "Will Write for Food"?
Wow, I guess being big and on the football team must have spared me (and even my nerdy friends) from this torture. I can't even recall any jock hazing in high school, at least other than the minimal teasing of freshmen.
I, having played football in High School and plenty of video games as well, feel that I am now both more aggressive and more violent, thereby making me an unstoppable killing machine.
So here I am, a 6'2" 250 lb fountain of destruction, terrorizing the countryside.
The really dumb part, for those parents lobbying for this, is that they don't realize that the kids will just get their older friends/siblings/parents/etc to buy the games for them. It's like cigarrettes, porn, alcohol, and just about every other age-restricted substance. If the kid wants it, the kid will get it. Restrictions of that nature don't actually do anything, I know for a fact that everyone in my high school who wanted to smoke, did, and everyone who wanted to drink, did, and everyone who wanted to jerk off to penthouse, did.
And that's why such legislation is completely useless
The key difference lies in who the levels of annoyance pertain to. The spam, while less annoying than death, annoys me, and therefore is worth the price of someone else's annoyance (in this case, death) in order for it to be eliminated. The me vs. someone else perspective shift warps all measures of "fairness" and "equality".
ROFL
Stupid flash... grrg...
Ahh, good ol' winter games, I still play that on the C-64 in my bedroom... That and Dr. Otto's Porno Adventure :p
I just like the Free as in Beer part, as well as the running on less expensive but better hardware part. Mmm... Beer...
HP still sells PC's?? I didn't know that...
I thought they were just a printer company these days.

Good job, Scotty!

Just download swaret and get it to upgrade all your packages. Way less effort that way.
You just install the packages from the testing directory and type lilo. It's really easy, actually, i'm running that kernel in my slackware now.
Yeah, I think he just did.

Thank you for showing how his example had no merit. In fact his whole statement isnt worth much, look at what sun did for Xorg, for instance.

Gimme a break, stupid Congress.
I think that was the only reason i listened to Blink 182 as a young-un

Computers don't slow to a crawl, Windoze does. Ever since I stopped using Windows, I've been a happy man.
