The tendency for gang members to brag about their exploits on Web pages such as the popular networking site Myspace.com has in some cases helped investigators make arrests.
Are you telling me that future versions of GTA will involve browsing and posting to MySpace?!
Dollar for dollar, network-based computers are faster. Unless you're playing Grand Theft Auto or watching HDTV, your network isn't the slowest part of your setup.
Network speed is one variable in the speed of an "Internet OS", another player is the speed of the implementation of the programming language used to develop web applications, currently JavaScript is the option for client-side web apps, and unfortunately it's much slower than other interpreted or compiled languages usually used for desktop apps, for example Google Spreadsheets is very cool and encompasses great functionality, but it's slow, and takes a lot of CPU power to run from my personal experience.
Porn spam is common and effective because sex is one of the basic human needs, so it's natural that more people are attracted to porn spam than Rolex watches for example. This is what first came to my mind when I read the title, and it turned out the article revolves around this idea.
The article requires login by the way, and BugMeNot comes to the rescue.
Within a few weeks he had stabilised in a minimally conscious state, which his doctors thought would last indefinitely. It did indeed persist for 19 years. Then, in 2003, he started to speak.
It appears that he was conscious of his surroundings, but not interacting with them (didn't move or speak), however he didn't reach brain death because he retained minimal consciousness.
VMware doesn't support 3D hardware acceleration, what you need is Wine or Cedega, I don't know about the other game, but Civ4 is running perfectly fine on my Linux machine under Cedega, check this guide for details.
I want to be able to indent or unindent the opening statement for a given loop, be it int, sub, function, if, for or else, and have the entire section that it describes, including the braces, indent accordingly.
In Vim: Press shift+v to highlight the current line, go to the opening brace, press % to go to the closing brace (highlighting the whole block in turn), then press = to auto-indent.
In command mode, == auto-indents the current line, << and >> indent to right and left respectively.
Back to the original article, I have the following in my.vimrc:
set et set sw=2 set sts=2 set smarttab
These options replace tabs with 2 spaces when pressing the tab key, indenting, and auto-indenting.
I don't remember if I read the following somewhere, or just thought of it while reading your post:
A CG artist creates an exceptional 3D character and manages to attract enough movie producer attention to create a movie for their character, the artist keeps the right of using the character instead of giving it away to the producer (in return of offering their exceptional character to appear in the movie), the artist then may build popularity and demand for their character, and attract more movie producers, slowly achieving the success of real-life actors.
With CG movies becoming more common, is this scenario possible? I know it's easier said than done, and my knowledge on movie production is shallow, but I wonder if there is anything that stops this from working for CG artists.
The hard part may be keeping the character usage right, this is where the difference between CG artists and real-life actors lies, but with a character interesting enough, is it possible?
Someone linked to this list in a previous discussion, one of my favorite quotes:
Obviously, we have heard the feedback asking us to be more standards-compliant in our rendering behavior. We must balance this ask with the need of our customers (and end users) to have their pages not be broken. To find a balance we introduced a strict mode in IE6 that lets authors opt in into the more standards compliant rendering (and, if you're putting in a modern DOCTYPE declaration, you're being opted in automatically). Pages authored under non-strict mode (or "quirks mode") will not change behavior in IE7 - so the fixes we've done to be more CSS compliant won't appear under quirks mode.
So wannabe web designers will still be able to create broken pages and get away with it on IE6 AND IE7.
I did a quick search for "CSS" in those reviews, got zero hits. I skimmed through the lists of enhancements, and looks like almost everything has been available in other browsers for years. 'Nuff said.
Am I the only one who simply ignored the whole thing? I saw the link posted on many forums and blogs, but it looked like some sort of prank or whatever, only in movies you'd see terrorist organizations publicly providing maps of their targets, or countdown timers...
And I'm using OpenOffice 2.0, I'm a casual office suite user, but it has the functionality and compatibility I need, and it's free and actively developed.
The latest version of MS Office may have some advanced features, but for the majority of users, OO.o is sufficient I think.
I have another suggestion for the Chinese government, why don't they create a squad of Orcs that patrols WoW looking for lazy unproductive Chinese players and executes them in game?
By the way, I've just noticed that the version available at Mozilla Add-Ons isn't compatible with Firefox 1.5, however, the one available at the author's homepage is, sorry for that.
From a web developer point of view, and as the article states several times, the Google Web Toolkit uses an approach similar to Swing, code written for GWT feels like GUI code more than web code, while I don't have anything against this and I believe it does have audience, I think many would prefer a more web-like approach such as Prototype or the Yahoo UI library.
I haven't tried it yet, but if it doesn't, why don't you file a feature request at their bugzilla? If there is enough demand, and given that the project is in active development, I think it will be implemented in later versions.
I see it's named after Mozilla's traditional naming conventions, with only the first noun capitalized, from Firefox FAQ:
How do I spell Firefox? How do I abbreviate it?
Firefox is spelled F-i-r-e-f-o-x - only the first letter capitalized (i.e. not FireFox, not Foxfire, FoxFire or whatever else a number of folk seem to think it to be called.) The preferred abbreviation is "Fx" or "fx".
I suppose Songbird's abbreviation is Sb? (As in Thunderbird's Tb)
Songbird is a great start, but does anyone know if there's a list of existing XULRunner applications?
AFAIK, there is ChatZilla and Songbird. In addition, there are plans to port Nvu and SeaMonkey to XULRunner. Let's hope the list gets longer as time goes.
Cross-platform, can run on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X (among the others).
It can be seen as a proof of concept on how general purpose multi-platform applications can be developed on top of XULRunner. Songbird also lets you visit online music stores and organize your music library, which makes it an Open Source alternative to iTunes.
Although GUADEC's core is Gnome, the warm-up weekend schedule contained many interesting sessions for Mozilla and OpenOffice.org localizers, but unfortunately live streams are only available for the core schedule.
For a compilation for links, I'd rather check a list compiled by a group of people instead of a single blog. A specialized blog may contain links of higher quality over all, but a dynamically-updated list maintained by a large group of users will be updated more often and may contain a larger variety of links. For example, here are del.icio.us links for video+course and online+course tags.
Last month the DSL developers released DSL-Not, a.k.a. DSL-N 0.1 RC1. It's 83.5MB of DSL coated with GTK sugar. Yummy!
Actually, looks like DSL-N is more than just GTK sugar, from its web page, DSL-N features a modern kernel with more hardware support, in addition to more apps, like MPlayer, Gaim, and gFTP.
It's also worth mentioning that the original DSL uses a lightweight GUI toolkit called FLTK and Lua for its tools, interesting!
Nooooo!
And the next thing you know, /. will block Arab usernames.
Oh wait...

Before you try to run a game under Wine or Cedega, I suggest you check their respective databases at appdb.winehq.org and transgaming.org/gamesdb.

Yeah I agree, the concept is fine but the database still has a long way to go, and it looks Windows-centric, the very first submitted app is Norton AV:

Oh, and Bill Gate's page could use a pic, why not submit one?

Well yeah, this time the tinfoil hat joke is on-topic, expect a flood of such comments :p

This is why I use the TargetAlert Firefox extension, it adds icons next to links indicating the files or effects they lead to.
