Many US police cars have cameras mounted on the front windshield. There are TV shows that show some of the footage from car chases and such. The next logical step would be to make a camera have a 360 degree view so that when the officer exited the car you could see more than just what is directly in front of the car.
This would bring an entirely new scale of issues. People getting arrested for wireless power theft would be cute.
Lets learn from expireance folks. This time we will require people to secure their wireless power from the get go. If you fail to secure it then the law should consider it an open invite for people to help themselves.
The sooner the Congress Critters can enact a law that dictates that a "signing statement" is nothing more than one mans opinion and has no legal effect the better.
That is all a signing statement is. Then next president can come in and change it if they want. If Congress doesn't like it then are free to remove the president.
I happened to catch Fox News about 5 minutes before Bush's announcement began. They showed one of teh Fox News corrospondents standing outside the White House, talking about the impending announcement. If you listened really carefully, you could hear people in the background chanting "Na-na-nahh-na, na-na-nahh-na, hey, hey, hey...goodbye"
but surely there are a lot of corporations and oil companies and the like that would certainly like to see research stating, "nothing to see here, move along." I imagine there is some decent funding to be found in the private sector for this kind of research.
Lots of problems with that.
If you are take their funding and are proven right the controversy goes away which means there is no need to keep you around so you loose funding.
What if your corperation decides to become "socially conscious" and get on the good side of environmentalists, you loose again (isn't that what BP is trying to do?).
There is a lot more money to be had in grants form Government while companies want some return on investment.
If you take corperate money you become an outcast and a "sellout"
Your best bet is to take the money and tow the line till the funding runs out then claim new findings counter to what the evil corperation wanted and then seek government funding to sort it out.
There are definitely people who use their SUVs for towing, camping, off road and even a few who carry lots of passengers (although a mini van is much better for that).
I would aggree with this and I would go a step further and say that the minivan is better for most family trips (once you get more than 7(8 in some models)people you are at the limit for a minivan and either have to get a fullsize van or large (Suburban size super large monster from hell)SUV.
I have owned both the large SUV(Toyota Sequia) and a Minivan (Toyota Sienna) and found that the Sienna could handle a family of 5 with baggage better. The problem with the minivan is that it can't TOW much which means that in order to fullfill the same passanger and cargo requirements as well as TOW you must get a large SUV.
My personal opinion is that a lot of folks that buy SUVs really need what a Minivan can offer but are "too cool" for a minivan and go for an SUV. Some may use the safety argument to justify their decision.
You're right, but when people complain about SUVs they're complaining about the city ones that are purchased for their "safety." The ones that spend most of their time driving around with one or two people in them and the cargo area empty most of the time.
Perhaps you know somone that does exactly that but I don't think it's fair to paint all SUV drivers with such a broad brush.
People buy SUVs for more than just safety (which is questionable anyway). The primary reason for an SUV is it's flexibility. Somone with an SUV can carry lots of passengers as well as lots of cargo (not just volume but weight). Some people have towing requirements that can't be met by a smaller car (a camper for example).
My vote against my rep. is pretty meaningless since his district is drawn to make sure he wins. In fact, the district lines cut right through the middle of my neighborhood and there is a third district that runs through my city not far from my house too. I don't get to vote for my congressman but rather I have been assigned my congressman.
In my state there are 13 US House districts and only one of them is going to be close. Nationwide there are only about 30 (out of 435) that are going to be pretty close.
The UN which allows human rights abuses of the highest order to be involved in its human rights commission or the US which at least still has the 1st amendment and other rights on paper?
Eh? Sorry? Where and when does the UN allow human right abuses? And according to a significant part of the rest of the world: human rights in the US is a joke! Illegal combattants? Waterboarding?
We have significantly higher standards for free speech rights than the rest of the world...
Are you trying to be funny, or what? (Then please mod parent "funny" instead of "insightful")
FYI: I live in Europe. I've been to the US on 5 occasions. I did like going there, but I will never EVER live there. Period.
The UN Human Rights Commission contains some of the worst Human Rights abusers on earth and sometimes makes them the chair. Cuba and Saudi Arabia are on it now along with China and Zimbabwe.
I would love to see which you would choose if you had to choose between "torture" in one of the contries listed above or "torture" in a US Militery prison. I know if I were a captured illegal combatant I would hope they sent me to a US prison.
You must be new here. Anything the US government does is bad and if it involved Bush then it's setting the stage for a total government takeover of our lives.
Moonbattery is the norm here when it comes to anything related to the USA fighting (literally or even figurativly) anything.
It's not just the internet. Have you ever looked at North Korea using Google maps nighttime? North Korea is the black patch to the left of Japan. It is more amusing if you switch to "Dusk Map" as you can clearly see that the lack of lights match exactly with the boarders of South Korea and China.
Go look at it using regular google maps during the day. Zoom in on Pyongyang and you will see almost no cars on the roads. Zoom in on Soul in South Korea and you see tons of traffic.
So if the GW supporters are wrong, the worst that would happen from following their advice is that we would be out a little more money but living in an environment that is much more diverse and clean.
Saying we are out a little money is a bit simplistic. It's oportunity costs. If perfect compliance with Kyoto will save us less than half a degree over the next 50 years compaired to doing nothing but the trade off is $1 Trillion dollars per year which could have been used to provide clean water for everyone on the planet, cure cancer, and deply linux to every desktop, is it worth it?
Is no one else seeing the double entendre?
Seymour Johnson.... "Chrome Dome".... attempting to dock.... nozzle of the tanker's boom, which was supposed to hook up with the B-52's orifice....
I know I'm a pervert, but come on, at first I thought this post was supposed to be a joke.
Yeah... and I'm sure it wasn't an accident that CNN stuck an X over Cheney... Bah. I once saw CNN mislabel Syria as Iraq on a map graphic once. I'm sure CNN wasn't trying to erase Syria... I'm sure CNN wasn't trying to erase Cheney. I'm also sure Fox wasn't trying to convince viewers Foley was a democrat...
Wow, somone used mod points to call this offtopic while letting all the Fox News bashing go? Seems this post made a valid counter point to the GP argument.
It would be a good idea for all news outlets to keep their labeling consistant. Every story about a political figure should mention party affiliation and Fox should acknowledge the mistake.
"America (well the USA anyway) really is a unique case. In some ways it's the most developed nation on earth, the richest, the only remaining global superpower, the strongest militarily and so on and on. And yet in others, it is practically a third world country"
GDP per capita is 25% below the USA. EU is falling farther behind the USA and they need to do something fast before the EU joins the third world.
Right. As a Brit recently moved to Houston; let me put the GP in perspective for you. I look out the window right now and all I see are cars that are luxury. Define luxury? For the travel purposes of all the people in those cars, a Mini Cooper would do fine, modern ones even have AC. What do I see though? Countless F-150s, Caddys, Beemers, Jeeps. I see a TON of vehicles that could probably carry 10 people but theres only one person in them: the driver. THAT, is what the GP is getting at; its fucking wasteful for one person to drive a Suburban everywhere. Why usea 10mpg car when you can use a 40-50mpg car that gets you between cities on two, maybe even ONE tank of gas! And just what the fuck does a city dweller need a F-150 pickup truck for anyway??? Honestly. Other than making up for a small penis, I can't find any other reason. Go ahead, mod me down, I've got karma to burn.
There are lots of reasons to have a larger car over an economy car. Many people use their cars for a lot more than commuting to work, family outings or the commute with a carpool children to school before the drive to work. In some states Children under 8 (yes EIGHT!) require a car seat and can't sit in the front seat so you may have to have a third row of seating. People freqently take vacations or visit family that may live several states away so people might buy cars while considering packing a family of four or five for long trips allong with all the lugage (especially if a small child is involved)
Some people might be towing Campers or Boats? Can't do that with a small car.
Some people might have hobbies that involve moving lots of cargo around so they may want a larger car or truck for that.
When you look out of that window you may be seeing the destination for one trip (the trip to work). You don't see the other trips or the other car that that family may have (perhaps it's an econobox).
Actually, from the weapons inspector's perspective, they almost always found a smoking gun. Not the bullets (bombs) but definitely the gun ( the hurried movement by Iraqi operatives of equipment out the back doors while they gave lame excuses to the inspectors at the front door to why they couldn't come in yet). Several times they even had satellite photos of trucks being driven up to the back doors and loaded with crates of stuff, while the inspectors waited at the front.
This was something that bothered me from the begining with this whole weapons inspections folly. The policy should have been that weapons inspectors would show up unanounced on helecoptors and if they weren't let in right away then they would immediatly leave and the bombers overhead would level the facility allong with any vehicles that attempt to leave the facility.
Last night at the bar it was "Cartoons and Shows from the 70's". We were pretty stumped on some (Goldar, Silvar, and...Steve?). Then someone whipped out the Treo and hit Google ("Space Giants" - never did get the last one)

It really makes you wonder what that smell is when you turn on the heater on the first cold day in the fall.

Now it says that in the last six months the polar bear has moved Antartica and halved the populations of Penquin.

I guess I shouldn't have MODed it funny.

I always loathed the computer displays that were so powerfull it would project it's image on the face of whoever was using it.
Wasn't it Gam?
