I've done really well out of being an Engineer, but if I had my time again, knowing what I do now, and looking back on my career, they'd need wild horses to pull me into Engineering.
Look, any of you youngsters out there with a liking for computers etc. become accountants or lawyers: loads more money, lots less stress, career length much longer, almost impossible for them to bring boat loads of people into your profession and cut the bottom out of the renumeration package. AND you get free time! As a lawyer or accountant you get loads of free time to do stuff that you like to do, like play with computers etc.
Within 10 years this could render the US vulnerable to attacks -- Doesn't anyone else think that this is actually the intention?
Considering the US telephone 'system', it's like building your house out of wood and then giving bottles of petrol and packs of matches to all the local kids.
Daftest idea I've read today, but it's still early.
I built one of 'electronic-camshafts' in my workshop about 20 years ago, fitted to the engine of an old Honda 2 cylinder motorcycle. The increase in power and efficiency was so startling that I went as far as applying for a patent. Then found it'd been patented about 15 years earlier still. Bit of a waste of time and money. At least nowadays one can sit with a stack of CDs or even Google and search these things yourself.
Some shops had their terminals replaced with modified units that captured the required card info and pin numbers which was then used by the bad guys at some later point. Aided and abetted I might add by an upgrade to the terminals wherein the new terminals look like the old ones and the old ones were discarded in a rather sloppy manner.
If you're a youngster interested in computers this should tell you: get interested in something else, something that will make you money so you can follow your interest. Working in IT will never provide you with the long term career to raise a family.
Now doing H1B applications for X immigrant will, so study law.
You will thank me for this advice one day, and those that mod me down, you sick SOAB condemming the next generation of intelligent kids to the hell that is being an engineer in the west...
When I was 14, I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend, but there was no passion, so I decided I needed a passionate girl with a zest for life.
In college I dated a passionate girl, but she was too emotional. Everything was an emergency; she was a drama queen, cried all the time and threatened suicide. So I decided I needed a girl with stability.
When I was 25 I found a very stable girl but she was boring. She was totally predictable and never got excited about anything. Life became so dull that I decided that I needed a girl with some excitement.
When I was 28 I found an exciting girl, but I couldn't keep up with her. She rushed from one thing to another, never settling on anything. She did mad impetuous things and made me miserable as often as happy. She was great fun initially and very energetic, but directionless. So I decided to find a girl with some real ambition.
When I turned 31, I found a smart ambitious girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground and married her. She was so ambitious that she divorced me and took everything I owned.
Now, I am older and wiser, and am looking for a girl with big tits.
Actually Roskildevej, the bulk of my journey, is about as straight a road as you will find. It is well lit at night and has traffic lights about a km or so apart.
I've tried thinking of the reasons for the high accident rate and the only thing that fits the facts is a general lack of ability to drive.
This evening, for example, the 6A bus skidded with its front wheels locked to stop and drop off a couple of passengers right in front of me, I thought it was going to mount the pavement, so I started to look for a soft place to land, but luckily it bounced off the kerb. That is from a so called professional driver!
The lights on the road are all phased to give a "green wave" at the posted speed limits, but most drivers still drag strip from one set to the next and many jump through on red, with consequent accidents.
The worst part of it all are the piles of flowers that appear with monotonous regularity by the side of the road.
Denmark has the worst drivers in the world. If it wasn't for all these fancy toys and the taxes making sure most vehicles only have tiny engines it would be utter carnage out there.
I cycle 50+ km a day and on my way to and from work I pass the wreckage of at least one accident in either direction. i.e. I see on average more than one accident every 25km.
Can anyone beat that?
(P.S. For the Danish readers the journey is along Roskildevej, right at Radhusplassen and over the swing bridge) (P.P.S. I only notice so much as they appear to dump the wrecked cars on that bit of road I have the temerity to try and cycle along.) (P.P.P.S. I do wish they would properly clean up all the glass and other rubbish afterwards as well.)
For those not up on UK politics this is just another scam to see how Gordon Brown can raise taxes. Any other outcome will be nothing but secondary.
My suspicion is, because he is so desperate to raise more tax revenue, it that he will allow anyone and their dog to patent anything, "fire", "the wheel", for example, and then others will have to fight it down in court.

Threaded moved to Denmark several years ago, so small wonder it is now the technology hot spot of the world.
What I do is rock my head side to side. or twist my glasses slightly. I think you'll find it is much cheaper.

Expect the usual: some update that breaks Google version, and an ever more bloated EULA on the next release.

When I read the article I had practically the same thought. So that's at least two of us...
Could not this device be proof of time travel?

Not Lagos, but the rest, oh yes.

The US patent office has given a patent for a ...

wait for it
battery.
My oh my, where do you get your patent examiners from?
Seeing as how short most careers in IT are most of the readers here will have have finished their career in computers by the time this happens.
If you read this stuff and replace "Sony" with "John Smith", would not one be feeling just a little sorry for John being Bhubbas b1tch right now?
So the bigger question is why isn't the CEO/MD of Sony now trying to negotiate through broken front teeth with Bhubba?
And my answer to that question is that the legal system is obviously broken, in a wheel has fallen off and it's heading towards the armco kinda way.
Now all the others I can expect, but "maggie", I just don't get that one. Have to admit, it sounds more than a little perverse.

Remember, you read it here first.
I, for one, will not be inserting any Sony products in any orifice of any computer, without significant pressure and wearing protection.
I, for one, welcome our new hyperbolic overlords.
I thought Ubuntu meant "Use the jdbc/odbc bridge"
Yeah, it'd look like a port.
Now which one, 80 or 443?
