I like the idea of a basic income, that as jobs become automated people don't have to rely om welfare, but I would be very uneasy with the government controlling prices of so many things. You start to think "well that's only £60ish a month, much less than a new car payment, but what if the engine goes next month". In my student days I had a car that was probably worth less than the replacement cost of a couple of tyres!
