    It turned out it was another admin, who had gone some kind of crazy. He had three NICs in his desktop box all configured to impersonate different machines, he had re-routed the boss's email through his mailbox (and some clients' mail too), and had all kinds of other things going on.

    Good thing he was fired, because dsniff is the appropriate suite of tools for reading other people's network traffic. Duh!

    If you're running Debian, you expect to get Debian's customised packages. Sheesh.

    This is a pretty bogus test.

    What do you think is propagating all this crap in the first place? MS boxes that have been compromised.

    OK, there are things like metasploit that run on Linux, but the majority of the bad traffic comes from PCs that have been compromised by similar stuff to this 'bogus test'.

    If every application did what you're describing Firefox doing, we'd be in a lot of trouble; the OS would never get to do any of those cute "spare" memory tricks that it does, because the apps would be trying to use way more memory than they actually needed to perform their core functions.

    Damn right! All that 'free' memory belongs to Emacs, no johnny-come-lately web browser should get a look in.

    Huh? Apache is a weberver. Windows Server is an OS. I could understand, "They run Windows Server. Why not use Linux?" Or, "Their website is on IIS. They don't use Apache."

    You can also get sendmail for Windows. All the ease of configuration of sendmail, with the stability of Windows.

    Similarly, you can run apache on Windows, but most people who are running apache are running it on Linux, and most people who are running Windows are using IIS.

    Funnily, the English call it the Imperial system and don't use it much any more. Also Imperial pints are different from American pints, so you just better hope that they measure rocket fuel in litres.

    Maybe you should read what this guy actually did. he intruded into a banks phone system (without permission), performed a security audit (again without permission), and then tried to get the bank to pay for his work. If I was the bank I would be taking this bastard to court too. how would you feel if someone turned up at your house did some work then sent you a bill all without you requesting anythign be done. The fact that the bank has a security issue is a side note here, they should be hiring a "reputable" security firm to look at there systems.

    And speaking as someone living in NZ, I'm glad the bank has to fix the bloody problem rather than shooting the messenger - as seems usual in these cases.

    That's nothing. At my company, we never have any meetings at all, nor any plans. And staff can take holidays whenever they want and work on whatever they want! We're not making any money yet, but it's only a matter of time! (Fingers crossed!)

    Seriously, it's because they don't need to, liability for software flaws being almost the inverse of other forms of liability issues. Next time you have a major outage at work, try telling your boss to sue MS to recoup your lost earnings. Then time how long it takes him to stop giggling.

    Not making myself popular around there, I'd say that WinXP, about the third greatest thing to happen to PC users (after MS DOS and Windows 3.1).
