Umm, prefetch is nothing new. In typical Microsoft fashion they just gave it a different name, "SmartFetch", and now people are crowing over it.

You're much like one of those whiny people that I often beat senseless and loot in online games such as Ultima. Ever since your childhood, you never could stand losing in anything. You threw the monopoly board on the floor when you landed on your younger sister's hotel.

I love PvP. It's so much more enjoyable when the whine. ;)

It's hard to believe that any police agency in the world would arrest someone for violating the rules of conduct in an online game. I did a search on the website of a Japanese newspaper where the story is supposed to have originated, coming up no results. So take this article with a grain of salt until we get a reputable source.

If this is a true story, then why on earth didn't the retailer open the box and check to see if it was the right card? You wouldn't have any luck trying that where I shop. If anything, getting ripped off was just as much the retailer's fault for not checking.

I think we're talking about a bit more than similarly placed panels, although that's another problem. I'm not saying they look exactly alike, but Windows 98 was the first thing that came to mind when I saw those giant buttons that say back, foward, up, stop, etc. with icons that are obviously Windows inspired.

I use GNOME on a regular basis and it's of course functionally different, but why try to look like Windows? What's the point?

But.. they still have to have the textbook in one form or another, whether it's in hardcover or eBook. And there's a much cheaper way of reading eBooks.. namely, on paper! A binded printed copy would likely last just as long as a delicate Pocket PC, possibly longer. And, it would cost more to charge a PocketPC than just reusing the printed copy.

Gah! It looks like.. Windows! I mean, I thought that was a screenshot of the Win 98 file browser for a second there. Which is too bad.. I use Gnome to take an occasional break from ugly Windows interfaces.

I don't like the current trend of trying to win over Windows users by emulating Windows. OS X can win over Windows users by just having a better interface. Instead of copying Windows, why not innovate?

  17. Re:Let me spell it out for you on Desktop Linux Mass Migration · · Score: 1

I know from personal experience that device drivers for modern hardware are still a big problem in Linux. Other than that, I don't mind using open source replacements. GIMP is a good example - it comes pretty close to Photoshop for the average user.

But I think you do have a point. However you look at it, Windows is still easier to use than Linux. Sure, some of the distributions have made some ground, but can you honestly imagine that one relative (the one who's always calling you for computer help) trying to do anything beyond basic tasks on Linux? We all know there are plenty of websites that still aren't Mozilla compatible. Think about the process of downloading a movie clip or listening to internet radio in Windows vs Linux. Even upgrading Flash in Linux would be too complicated for most.

I think, before even worrying about compatibility or replacement for common programs, the open source community should instead be working toward making Linux as "beginner-friendly" as Windows. People will be much more willing to use the platform. That's my two cents.
