Contrary to you, sir, I lived in a communist country at that time and thank God I don't anymore. Sure it collapsed economically, like all stupid leftist ideas must. Reagan with Tatcher was instrumental to speed it up and avoid military disaster by projecting strength. You probably too young to remeber president Carter. Bumbling idiot who extended suffering of millions under communist rule by his stupid policy of appeasement. The usefull idiot name is not a name that I made up. It is a KGB name for leftist crowd, mainly young dumb students in the Western Europe who was brainwashed by their universities in support of the left ideology. The T shirts with the mass murdered Che Guevarra are example of how stupid the leftist crowd was and still is. The reason they called them idiots, was because they were basically working for Soviet propaganda completely for free. The Moscov is still succesfully using this mechanism currently in western green movements to protect Russian energy sector against western competition.

Recent Tesla announcement that it is finally profitable is just a marketing gimmick to fool politicians and public so they can cough more money in support.Neither Tesla, nor Leaf nor Volt are viable economical products and can only be sustained by taxpayer and political correctness or by cash of corporate giant like GM or Nissan, that earn money in the gasoline powered cars.

I find it a suspicious coincidence that when Russia is loosing it's influence, some leftist movements are coming up with sky ifs falling protests. In the 70's it was "peace movement" against short range nuclear weapons in Europe. Those weapons and other reagan policies in fact ruined evil empire and brought freedom to literally millions of Europeans. Later it turned out it that the "movement" was heavily controlled, steered and financed by KGB. No counting bunch of useful idiots in the west who did the work for Russia for free. These days Russia influence is mainly in energy supply. When Gasprom started to loose large chunks of gas business due to cheap plentiful clean gas obtained by fracking from US, the green movement jumped back to action. Somehow they do not care, that the gas is in most cases replacing coal, the dirtiest and most potent source of CO2. I have a feeling that if not KGB or whatever the secret police in Russia is called these days, the useful idiots are back at work.

Why stop at solar panels ? They are expensive, don't work at night and even on sunny day in most US they would generate fraction of the energy needed to power the house. I call for progressive politicians to open their mind. We need personal nuclear reactor in every house. This is reliable power source. Works day and night, winter or summer, wind or no wind. Does not need frequent fueling !!! We can even mandate that the waste neutrons to be captured and reused (as an additional benefit) to trans mutate lead into gold. As we all know, Washington - "yes we can" - is fully capable to mandate laws of physics or economics to be modified as needed. This will pay for itself. With the gold produced we can buy extra plutonium to power houses of those who cannot afford personal nuclear reactor for free. Science behind it is as solid as science behind affordable solar panels. Thus we will have unlimited source of energy that pays for itself. Progressive Washington must stop thinking small. Just don't call it nuclear. Come up with some other name. Progressives has unexplained allergy to anything called nuclear.

That is a primitive look at the problem. It takes massive government help to build car industry from scratch. Japan did this, Korea did this and China is doing it right now. They were producing subsidized cars for decades before their products become competitive and were able to stand against global competition. All countries that have some brains know that auto industry is a key to the strength of the economy and protect it even if orioginally it cannot compete. Only British let their car industry die and today their industry is a shadow of what Germany is in Europe. Neither Bush nor Obama was that stupid to kill US auto industry and expect our economy to grow. It would be much easier to let the banks die and rebuild them from scratch then to build new auto industry. If the economy is so Darwinian, why didn't you demanded to kill all the banks in the first place. They created the whole mess.

Yes, we still make few passenger jets, some machines and some military hardware. The rest of what we make nobody is really interested in buying, lo tech cheap stuff. The largest exporters in the world are China and Germany, not USA. Even the stuff we make is more often now made using foregin components and tools. When it comes to high tech USA is even shrinking faster. Have you seen US made high end camera, home theatre, TV set or car these days?
