Since Bush era, SciAm has more and more to do with extreme left propagnda, lest and less with science. This behaviour is very consistent with leftist media.
Microsoft could have attracted more buyers if they would not try to be Apple. They should have priced Surface at almost cost of making them and with some holiday sales even below cost of making them. They also should have chosen to completely open the Metro OS to let any amatour and small programmer to write any application they want without Microsoft store permission. This was precisely what originally won Windows the place it is in the PC market. They should have also left PC OS with a choice os conventional Start menu so the core customers would not be enraged. By closing their OS, pricing it at Apple level and enraging large number of current PC users they ended up at what they deserved - completle failure.
I wonder how many people are actually capable of designing pieces in CAD type software to print it. BTW CAD actually needs strong PC. Designing CAD parts on tablet or phone will be interesting masochistic exercise.
If this goes through, the safest way to protect private PC regardless of if you are a pirate or not would be to start using Linux desktop. Id does not guarantee 100% malware free but it is one of the safest. Linux desktop might still have a chance !.
This is not neccesairly that good. I would rather see law change that prevents trolls. This development can easily evolve to a tool where large rich corporations will buy politicians to shut down legitimate small inventors. Generally I don't like governemtn to decide who is and who isn't a troll.
Not just start menu. The whole charms, active corners and all that junk must dissapear. Preferably uninstalled to free space on the disk. Microsoft store can go the way of dinosaur. I refuse to buy a single app from their store.
Once they reverse the Windows back to desktop mode it will be a sign for anyone not to invest into Metro devices and apps Early adopters will be left holding the bag. Since Windows RT was glued artificially to Win32 it can be dropped without hurting compatibility of established huge Win32 software base. I predict, that MSFT will drop the technology since it is not getting any decent traction. Interestingly this will be a first to drop bloated part of Windows without hurting much of the user base. Windows RT now will have a stigma of failed technology and it doesn't matter anymore how good it is. It will be laughed out and will never be cool. Microsoft need desperately something new and it must be separate from Windows. Windows must stay with traditional business desktop / laptop and defend this ground without alienating that community. Mobile will have to get something that is not tied to the Windows 8 fiasco. Most likely some sort of a copy of proven Android / iPad interface but capable of talking to Windows well. MSFT is excellent at copying technologies that are developed by someone else and making them better than original. They suck however at connecting to the cool and therefore they fail to be successfully innovative. From my point of view they wasted so much time and effort on the dead end technology and neglected to do any improvement for the desktop / laptop user. The.NET stagnated. Company indicated basically they they lost interest in.NET alienating many developers..NET did not get AMP, did not get decent 3D engine. C# stagnated. There is still no good easy to program DirectX framework. AMP is only available through native C++. Speaking of native therfe is nothing on the horizon to replace ancient, outdated MFC. So much effort was given to Windows RT and it will be all lost.
That would only work if PC users would like what they see on the PC. I highly dislike Metro so I bought Apple iPad and Google Nexus (Android) tablets. They already lost me as a customer. Microsoft tablet is not even on my radar screen and big part of it is because I was so dissapointed with Windows 8 desktop experience.
Metro doesn't suck is your personal opinion. Metro interfsce sucks for many of us who use laptop and desktop. The proof of it is in tremendous popularity of third party "Start button" replacement applications. I don't want to see any Metro on my computers. Not only it is butt ugly but also lacks tree structure so it is worse than my organized start menu. Don't even mention that I can search for programs by typing. I use several hundred of applications and those often used are already pinned to the desktop so I don't need to search for them. The ones that I use rarely are not memorized by it;s name so cannot be searched by typing. The yare searched by navigating tree structure of the organized menu. When I use my computers I don't want any Metro at all, I don't want any charms, active corners or any of that junk. I want Metro deleted from my computer completely so it doesn't waste my disk space. That how much it sucks for many of us. I refuse to buy / dwnload any application that runs on WinRT - on Metro interface. This is my private boycot of the Metro concept. I will only buy or download application that run on the desktop. In addition I refuse to buy Windows Phone or Windows tablet. They come with Metro like interface.
Microsoft. Time to go back to drawing board. Scrap the childish tiles, bring Windows back to it's PC roots and develop standalone, high quality but in the first place AESTHETIC !!! mobile OS. Then maybe, only maybe you will have a chance. Quite frankly that chance is very, very slim. You are simply not cool, period. Years of heavy handed approach to home users bought you universal hatred. Your only chance is that people have short memory. But you need stellar product to get them back. Forget closed system. You original success was based on openness of your OS. With closed system you are simply dead in a water against Android or Apple. Anyway, with you Metro crap, right now you have another Bob on your hands.
Cost is probably the main reason. But there are multiple technical reasons to hold it back too. First is a limited number of material those printers are capable of using. You cannot use glass, ceramics or metals in most printers that are commercially viable. In fact commercially viable printers are using just a small subset of plastics that have limited mechanical properties, Those plastics also have limited temperature range in which they work properly, limited UV resistance, etc. The maximum size of the printed parts is another limitation. The inexpensive printers are only capable to print relatively small parts. You cannot print many household type items because of this limitation. The surface finish of printed parts is also rough above what required for precision parts. Most machine parts not only require machining to achieve required precision and surface finish but also complex heat treatment and chemical treatment to work properly. In summary relatively inexpensive printers cannot be used to produce any decent machine parts nor larger items. Printing machine parts of substantial strength and medium size is probably the breakthrough needed to attract hobbyists do it yourself type people and create mass market. Another limitation is time required to print. Those printers are still horribly slow. If I need to build a device that consists of few dozen parts it will take several days to print them. Another limitation is the cost of materials. Those printers must be using ink jest printer business model. Printing anything is generally not economical. Printed parts cost significantly more than mass produced parts. That is why the people still buy books in the bookstore instead of printing them on personal printers at home. Finally CAD tools. The decent CAD programs are prohibitively expensive. The few open source and other free software such as Google Sketch are too primitive to create complex, well controlled shapes. The advanced CAD systems such as AutoCAD, ProE, SolidWorks, Catia, NX are very expensive or way too expensive for general public. In addition those CAD systems are too difficult for average person. You practically need engineering degree to learn and use them efficiently. Even those simple ones available for free are not that simple to learn to create more complex shapes. There is also lack of ready to print models available on the web. If I want to print some plastic box to replace broken one in my home there is no way to get a data model of that part. I can search the web for replacement part number and even buy it from some store but it is very difficult to find a model of such part. So the only resource for anyone is to precisely measure the part, make CAD model of it to print it. How many people have desire to do so let alone skills to fully reverse engineer parts ? You need lots of practice to do so well.
The darling of the left is untouchable.
That is why every country has elites. If you eliminate elites you end up with leaders such as Lenin or Stalin.
The Holy Church always knew, that for God like observer time is not an issue.

Since more and more people belive in global warming, why not charge them extra for this ?
So much for the "Land of the Free". But this is all for the "Good of the Children" I'm sure.

Actually Venus and Mars temperatures correlate very well with distance from Sun.
What rush ?

Another win for LGBT crowd.
Science doesn't exclude religion.
Water can be treated. It is all about the cost. If water treatment cost less than the energy obtained it is still a good thing for society.

Copernicus was less than 1%.
Earth will survive just fine. Stop this sky is falling BS. The green religion is becoming fundamental.

Planet should have single word name. Albertus would be perfectly fine. Adding second word make thing too long and cubersome.

Give them drug resistsant bacteria and tell them that drug cannot be developed because we cannot test it on live mice.
