    No, it doesn't.

    It is Entirely Accurate that this is a Bug.

    You're right it is a bug. But saying that Ubuntu is trashing your HD is a gross exaggeration.

    It's important to note that this only occurs if ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE is enabled. By default it is NOT set. From /etc/default/acpi-support:

    # Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
    # hangs on some machines
    ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=false

    This subject has been discussed in countless basic, and not so basic, security publications. Not that it isn't a real problem, but this is hardly ground breaking.

    There was no "explosion", it was more of a high speed crash. Also, the probe was the size of a washing machine, where as the comet is roughly 8.9 by 2.7 by 2.7 miles.

    Personally, I try to do the "right" thing, but could care less about what "the law" says I should do (largely because I've learned that "law" and "right" only rarely overlap, and then only for purely accidental reasons).

    In a free society the public domain will never die. It's part of our culture. There will come a point when things get so bad that people will just stop caring about the lawyers and self-righteous extremism. Look at what a joke patents are becoming. If it's get ridiculous enough and enough people care about, it will change.

    Although, things aren't so great right now, and will probably get worse before they get better.

    I'm sure they'll be a little more durable than the USB sticks we have now. I wonder, though, how you'll unlock the doors. I don't like the idea of someone being able to stick a USB key into my car door. Plus, people probably won't be ready to give up the mechanical for the electronic.

    The music upload is really cool though...

    On slashdot we always make a big deal out of censorship particular to the Chinese government. Why then, would it be ok for us to do the same thing to it's people. Many attacks do come from there, but that doesn't make it any less wrong.

    If your going to do this at your company then don't whine about Chinese censorship any longer.
