  1. Re:conservation of energy on Nanotech Battery Claims to Solve Electric Car Woes · · Score: 1

Except that I heard from http://www.sciencefriday.com/ (but can't remember exactly where) that there are issues with vitreous storage of nuclear waste. When the alpha radiation occurs what effectively happens is there is a kick on the atom releasing the alpha particle and this shakes the crystal lattice and over time it degrades the glass into something which is much less durable.
I'm all for Nuclear Power to play a part in the over all power generation system (maybe even a huge part) but we need to come up with more and better ideas about storage.
But even if we ignore that, a 20 minute drive to work in an electric car followed by recharging over 8 hours would be fine by me. But now we get the ability to travel hundreds of miles and get the car recharged whilst we stopping off at the services. Because I live in the UK, all I need now is some way of recharging overnight by catching the rainfall with a water wheel and I'll be able to drive for free. ;-)

"Our technology is infallible. You *must* have compromised your card / PIN. You will get no refund nor compensation."
What this does is point out that the first sentence is not correct and that the second does not automatically follow. I am not particularly protective of or abusive towards Chip-And-Pin but the "Nothing to do with me mate. You'll have to prove it." attitude of the banks is kind of annoying. I'm much more happy paying my taxes to find this kind of issue rather than modding the housing to play Tetris.
  3. Re:TV not PC on A Magnetic Memory Alternative to Hard Disk · · Score: 1

The "Off" button on the front of the TV is probably just a mechanical switch to interrupt the power. If you turn it off and then back on again, it reverts the alarm function back to off, the display is set to "Normal 1" and I have to rejig it. I get the feeling that it is just the way this was made.
My Cable TV box on the other hand is much more modern and every time takes ages to scan, verify, authenticate etc. onto the cable network and this would benefit from a new chip to store all of this once and not need to discover most of it each time.
I'm basically looking to get this adopted so that when I upgrade my TV and A/V kit next year I can do it with a view to keeping my power consumption (and energy bills) down. It's all self, self self, ;-)

  4. TV not PC on A Magnetic Memory Alternative to Hard Disk · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't want this in my PC to boot my O/S quicker. I want this in my TV / Video / STB / whatever so that I can turn them off at night and not have to wait for ages for them to be reinitialised / scan for frequencies / whatever they actually do when they are turned on. It would also make me not have to reprogram my favourites and display settings, which currently do not survive a power cycle. Get these into modern A/V technology and we can finally do away with the necessity of standby just to speed up watching the TV in the morning.

Is this another case of scientists catching up with what has been common knowledge for generations?

I know that it is not fair to compare Sony and Libya directly but at the moment consumers have been abused by Sony and their level of remorse seems to only extend to "We're sorry we got caught" not "We're sorry we did it in the first place"

Or if an American drove a car in the UK with a passenger who was drinking beer (dunno if that would wash because it is only illegal in certain states...) Or even an American who goes to Amsterdam, gets spliffed up and then prosecuted for it upon his / her return.

Given that most people are talking about beating up people who use the phone in a concert / film theatre / class room where you don't need technology any more sophisticated than a loud voice and the ability to shout "Oi. Idiot. Turn the bloody thing off will you?" I just want to say that this will be a massive boon for the Emergency Services. Currently there are places (film theatres libraries and train carriages spring to mind) where the owners try to block all of the signal to stop people from talking. I'm okay about this as their choice as owners but it becomes a problem when there is an emergency and you need the Fire / Ambulance Service to get in and use their communication systems. At least now it is at a touch of a switch to turn it off an on again.
I also want to say that the brain surgeon justification is very contrived and Mr. Farren should be ashamed to have used it. If you absolutely have to be contactable for the next two hours then ensure that the restaurant / cinema / train carriage / brothel has signal before you enter.

The letters finished with a suggestion that this was probably due to moving house recently and if she just paid up then there would be no prison for her. Suffice it to say that at no point did anyone knock on the door even though the house was a Victorian terrace and there were at least three TVs in neighbouring houses.
It is all a load of rubbish that they have vans roaming the streets trying to find the licence-less houses. They just have a mailmerge routine set to print letter to The Occupier, $HOUSE_NO, $ROAD_NAME trying to imply that the Police will be round if you don't pay now.

But back to the article, it really shouldn't matter as all you need to do is keep a large number of DVDs on your list and make them diverse (not all within 2 month of release. Get some classics in there to mix it up.) The only problem I have with this is that they seem to be saying that they will only ship a certain amount of discs each day / week / month which would really annoy me. I'm unemployed at the moment and it is completely practical for me to receive three DVDs in the morning, watch them, in the day and send them back in the evenings post.
If you say that the shipping is Monday evening post from warehouse, Tuesday morning arrive at my door, Tuesday evening back into the post again after being watched, Wednesday morning arrive back at the warehouse, Wednesday evening post a new set from the warehouse etc. I could easily get a three or four day turn around on a group of discs.
FTA it shows a graphic which says that you will get throttled if you have more than nine rentals per month. I could get flagged within a fortnight and I am not just copying the discs for my own library. I'm actually watching the discs. It seems rather shortsighted if you ask me.
