  1. Company growth for shareholders on Volkswagen's Former CEO Charged In Germany Over Diesel Rigging (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

German engineering advancements peeked a decade or so ago making it harder for these companies to generate growth for their shareholders, corner cutting and in this case, out right lying are quick ways of generating growth. It's a sad state for these German companies - Mercedes were recently found to be using false leather for their car seats - marketed as real leather of course - and had to make a payout to a guy in the UK who had his seats tested after purchase! Luxury ...

I ran the free upgrade tool to take my Windoze 7 laptop to Windoze 10. The upgrade itself was fine but the laptop would never stay on for more than 24 hours without hanging afterwards, requiring a full power cycle to remedy and how loooong does that windoze 10 boot sequence take? WOW!. I've stuck Fedora on it now instead and use the MATE desktop - I'm really happy with the result, it took me a bit of work to get PopcornTime 3.10 working but otherwise all good. Boots like a charm, great interface, does everything I want and doesn't track what I'm doing. Bye bye Micro$oft, I won't miss you!

A work colleague was trading bitcoin most of last year. towards the end of the year he chased his losses one weekend and came into work on the Monday stating "he was now down overall" - he didn't look to happy about it so I can only guess how bad things were for him. He was sacked on the Friday for not paying enough attention at work, he'd been under review for a year or so and had failed to show any improvement - I guess he thought bitcoin trading was his way out. The story that more than 95% of bitcoins are held by just 4 addresses is enough to put me off getting involved (whether it's true or not.)

I was the same, with no qualifications. I started work in a small IT company on their helpdesk and learned Linux and Unix from that position. I'm now 35 and own 2 properties without mortgage; I had nothing to begin with. I view that as enough success for me. I have never contracted but will consider that next as I don't feel the need for the security of a salaried position, I am just too lazy to leave my current employer who remunerates me well enough. Go for a small business to begin with, they won't have the HR issues that many of the posts detail here in response. Even better, a small family run business will look for qualities in you that other companies would not (I cannot explain that, but I know it) After 2 years, move on - the only way to get decent a pay rise is to move to another company, staying in the same company will only see you garner incremental increases based on your current salary whereas moving to another company can see your pay increase through demand of your skills. I would wish you good luck, bu you won't need it if you are even half decent. There are always jobs in IT, it's proved recession proof in this dark time at least. Be prepared to travel.

I have seen a wide angle of work ethics within the gambling industry, some companies being quite strict on software releases and infrastructure changes being rolled out to production, others running along the lines of "free-for-all" changes in production - bless them. So do ask the right questions in interview, otherwise you could find yourself applying Saturday night changes in production ....

I acknowledge that most of this equipment now comes with SSH servers - I guess it comes down to persuading Network and Security Admins. to use the SSH interface and disable the telnet interface altogether - In my experience, many have not switched over to SSH for historical reasons (ie they "always" use telnet to access a router!)
