I agree, I was using OS X on my Gateway for a while. And while it was good, some stuff just annoyed the crap out of me. Yeah, I was running on unsupported hardware, but the behavior for alt-tab (mapped as apple-key-tab) was annoying. I like being able to scroll through each window. It bothered me most when I was ssh'ing into the school boxes from mac os and had multipled instances of firefox and emacs running and it was a pain in the butt to figure what was where. Yes, I knew about expose, but even so, I am just so used to alt-tab, which also works in solaris (to my satisfaction.)

I would probably get a macbook pro for the iLife suite, because I haven't yet gotten my sound card working in OS X. (I want garageband.) However, I do not want a machine with only 512mb ram standard. 1gig is the minimum necessary now, especially if I was going to be dualbooting with windows for work.

I also like have the right click button. I don't think I'll ever get used to shift click.

It may not matter to a lot of people on this website, but the fact is that myspace is very popular in high school and middle school settings. It's the "cool thing" to have a myspace. I'm sure many of us remember how much crap we delt with in high school because we weren't "in the cool crowd." Restricting myspace is one of those things that would help to further a divide between the cool and uncool, rich and poor, etc.

In my local library the computers can be used for any reason as long as no one else needs to do research. If you are just bs-ing around on the internet because you enjoy the air-conditioning at the library and someone needs to look up some information on the internet then the librarian will ask you to move along. And yeah, I have a friend who didn't have a computer at home, but was able to have an e-mail address and a myspace account and IM accounts because he was able to access those services through the the local library.

I think this legislation is the worst piece of crap to come out of legislature yet. Hopefully something can be done before the Senate can pass this. And if they pass it, maybe Bush will use a signing statement to say that this bill won't be enforced, or he could flat out veto it.

And I don't think that the prevalence of "sexual predators" is so high on these websites. More likely its just horny teens that will do anything with anyone. I believe the problems that do occur on these websites are due to bad parenting and dumb kids. I was taught to not talk to strangers, that's why I don't accept random friend requests from people I don't know. I don't know them, why would I want them as a friend?

Some people need to go to the house to educate the legislatures on the internet, because they obviously have no idea what it is.

I really think it is time for people running those platforms to upgrade to something more modern, just for the reason of security. If they choose a windows platform (includes Intel Macs w/ bootcamp or parallels) then they can use IE7 also.

From the IE7 requirements page it seems it can run on a Pentium 233. So it may be possible to get the browser running on those old systems, even though it says it can only run on XP SP2, XP 64bit, and Win2k3 Server SP1. That or people with those older systems can upgrade to XP or maybe Server 2k3 (I read the other day about someone running it on some extremely slow hardware.) So that could be a choice if they want IE 7.

I'm not sure how well it is supported on Linux brands from the Wine side of things though.
