Not true my wireless antenna received a direct strike, obviously the wireless kit (21m aluminum pole) was all fried but the UPS took the hit for the rest of (laptop, LCD screen etc...) the kit US$200 for a new wireless kit and we were back up and running.
That being said we are fairly certain the copper earthing strip took the brunt of the voltage since it was reduced to a thin smear down the side of the house.
I worked through the last big solar storm about 12 years ago and we had some power outages (tripping the breaker from the mains) satellite comms just about dropped out completely and POTS was severely derogated, but just not that bad.
I suspect you had Dengue as opposed to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue, neither are nice.
But one is like a bad case of flu and treated with a saline drip in a bad case, the other is potentially lethal and needs whole blood transfusions which are tricky to find in most of the badly effected areas.
Killing of the Dengue carrying mosquito would still leave you with plenty of other breeds / species to swat by hand including the ones that carry malaria.
Ye pretty common problem most appliance plugs don't even come with the third pin (located on the side of the circular plugs) you need to shell out for a decent adapter the 4 way power strips from Ace Hardware are good when they have them in stock. Of course then all you have to worry about is whether the earth is live.
Trust me I know my house is wired up using UK, US, Australian and Indonesian plugs and sockets.
Does anybody know how much junk is up there and are there any plans to start collecting it? If you could collect it would it be worth the space station refining it? I mean most of the cost of materials is in there launch but if the stuff is just floating about.
On a side note what was the name of the US show where they built there own space ship to collect junk in space, based in a scrap yard and one episode had they salvaging sputnik for it's gold skin?

It already happened, fortunately we were all saved by the congratulatory hi-five.

No problem we just build in a 5 year life span and set up a new police agency to hunt any rogue ones down, call them knife joggers.
