They couldn't prove to the criminal jury that he was guilty beyond reasonable doubt, but in the civil lawsuit, they basically proved that there was a high likelyhood he was involved in the deaths.

In a service company, each project requires a certain number of employees, and as projects increase, so does the required headcount.
Well, they could always just increase hold times. If you get the right balance, some customers will get annoyed and hang up, but when the service contract is with a large company, one or two "They put me on hold too long" comments can be ignored. Now you can keep your staff #'s lower....of course, in the case of an 800 number (becoming much less common now-adays) your phone bills could go through the roof, because Jonny may only be calling to ask where the "any key" is and spends 45 minutes on hold listening to your wonderful hold music.

Now, if your support is provided by "consultants", well, you have it made, because some customers will want the consultant on hand at all times in case something pops up. Now you are charging the customer the consultants salary, plus your service charge AND you don't even need a desk for the consultant in your building. Those are the support contracts that can turn into cash-cows. They usually are for instances where it is not that the code is buggy, but a level of expertise is needed to run it.

Hmmm....LOTR comes to mind.....You don't accidentally film several extra hours of footage with production costs for a movie like that being so high. You make regular releases, special releases and EXTRA-special releases of your DVD's and you manage to get some % of true fans out there to buy all of them, just because they "must have" all of the versions.

In addition to that, you get all of the people who want to see it on the big screen, then they have to go rent/buy the DVD to see the scenes they didn't see, thereby enlarging your DVD audience to include a much higher % of those who went and saw the movie when it was released.

I guess it could be worse. I mean, I guess a movie from decades ago could be modified as to include the actor who played the same character in the prequal to the movie that was filmed MUCH later. But who would do that?

Now, I can see the "fear of giving bad marks" as being true in some cases. I used to review PC hardware for a now closed site (stupid .Bubble Burst), and at times I made my reviews a little more tame than I wanted to so I didn't lose industry contacts. Does that mean I gave everything much higher than it deserves? NO, it means I said "You may want to consider X or Y" rather than saying "This is a peice of crap that should have never been made" because one man's peice of crap, may be another man's pot of gold.

The same goes with the movie industry, the automotive industry, etc... How often does motortrend call a car a peice of crap? Not often. They are more critical than most and they still seem to be padding ratings of cars.

Is GM to blaim when someone desides to drive drunk and kill someone?

No. Why? Because in all of those cases there is a concious choice. I've played GTA1->GTA San Andreas, Carmageddon, Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, etc.. Have I killed anyone? No. Why? Because I choose not to. Just like I choose not to drive drunk, etc...

  16. Novel Concept on Another Stab at Laptop Security · · Score: 1

Here's a novel concept....use more standard forms of security...eg...lock your doors. Back when I was living in college dorms 6 years ago (is it bad I already feel old?) the most common reason people had their laptop stolen is because they left their dorm door unlocked and went to take a shower, etc... Laptop locks have been around a long time as well (of course, as we learned from the bike-lock world, sometimes the best lock can be defeated by a BiC pen) Granted everyone will be able to come up with a what if this scenario, what if that, but the best solution to solve the problem is to be like an onion and have layers (ok, shoot me for the lame joke). A layered approach is always the best bet. Lock your door, lock down the laptop to the desk if you so choose, and install some "Phone Home" software if you like. But of course, given physical access and enough time, anything can be defeated.
