it is free, and the author is still unsure. he wants to keep it free and still make a living. he tried selling a manual, but that did not make much of a profit, so blender is still in that uncertain stage. if NaN ever gets bought out (or goes under, which would suck), blender will be immediately relased under the GPL.
blender is still one of the few non free (as in free speech) programs i think are worth checking out. it puts to shame all the =$1500 3d packages i know of and has built in sequence editing and compositing. it also has the fastest rendering engine ive ever seen, and a really good animation system (rough for character work though, espeically if your use to maya and the like) there will be RIB export following the release of the plug in API.
when recruiters call me asking for that, i politely explain to them that i dont have windows or word97. especially if they are looking for unix people, they should not expect you to have windows. clueing the recruiter in on the fact that unix is not a program that runs in DOS and that word97 does not exist for it helps.
the email that insists on it, i just delete. chances are you dont want to work for them.
its the same reason i always go to interviews with a fresh coat of black on my nails. if they give me any crap about it, i probably dont want to work for them.

vector formats are far more flexible, you never have to worry about scaling them. perhaps they should be looking at GYVE instead of the gimp? EPS is a good format. ghostscript reads it.
on the desktop, server, etc your right about the alpha. but when power consumption is important, like in an embedded system or a notebook id rather have a PPC. as nice as the strong arm is, for some reason there is relatiely little software for it. i like the fact that people can come over and use the mac sitting next to my real computer, if i had a laptop, for the same purpose, id like to be able to also boot into the macOS. (of course i would be using sheepshaver if i really wanted to run any mac apps) i dont know how strongARM compares to PPC. anyone with experiene on both?
blender (for many, that and the gimp are why they even have linux) any free software that uses GL GLquake and family
any ported commercial ware.
then theres the competitive price performance... yes you con run this stuff on an SGI(irix), but you would pay far more for far less performance.
seriously, some of us like to code GL stuff. some of us even do it for fun, and think linux is a more fun environment than NT. (ok, so some may think NT is more fun, but they have nothing to complain about)
and, yes there are many corps, studios etc who have in house software written for irix or some other unix that they would rather port to linux than to NT.
they just concider it "workstation" as opposed to PC(nt) or mac. its how they handle any system of which they dont know what it is. your expected to handle your end.
there are other chips on this planet, so all that crap about sites requiring this id thing would alienate non intel users. looks like thats what intel wants. MS probably too. fuck em! besides, as mentioned in earlier posts an OS can overide anything that gets sent out over the network. sure you can encrypt something. and sure you can just take the encrypted version from another chip anyway.
processor upgrades would now be a real hassle for commercial software if it used the IDs. more reason to us free software.
im in no hurry, i still hope they take thier time. what great about free software is that there is usually no dead line (i get a deadline in a couple of weeks, but usually there isnt one) meaning when somethings released, its released good. even if your not willing to wait, theres the pre releases...
so whats this about visual PC support? still need an X server...
this shows how much web usage is going on about the different OSs. im sure there alot more web traffic per capita about linux than the MacOS for example, partly just because linux and the majority of the software we use are developed over the net.
www.linux.sgi is down. sgi seems really silent on li.org the FAQ on the site does not mention linux a search for linux on that site brings up nothing (this is a search on the new products site)
some say something about MS not liking sgi dealing with linux, and shutting all that down. maybe thy were right. SGI now bows to microsoft? selling NT boxen is one thing, but having started stuff with linux and so suddenly and silently dropping it like this makes them seem to be bowing to microsoft. and losing my respect for them.
