Just because the story of Lord of the Rings ends, doesn't mean that the virtual world has to. It isn't as if the book ended with:
"Sam took Rosy on his lap and suddenly the world exploded and everyone died."
Or they could go back in time and fight the original war of the ring.
Bottom line, if the game is successful they'll find a way to keep it moving.
"...it still remains to be seen whether PC gamers will pay for what they've always gotten for free."
See, it's comments like this that keep slashdot from being taken as serious as other bigger news sites. The posts are biased and that one quoted line shows the submitter didn't even read what he was talking about. Live Silver accounts are free and give more than what PC gamers have ever experienced before. If you don't want to pay for Gold, fine. Super. You're not missing anything you haven't done before. Microsoft is not charging PC gamers for what they've always gotten free. BIAS!
Cheers mate, my thoughts exactly. Everybody bitched when they released the re-re-re-re-mastered "Now with completely new scenes" editions and screamed for the 'original'.
Now you have the original and you want it remastered?
You guys are cracked.
Do you understand the term niche? If everyone on PC is playing a single game, then that is in fact a niche! But if we broaden that to: MMOs, RTSs, FPSs, and PopCap puzzle games then we have... oh look at that... still a niche market.
Ninty Nine Nights? That game was garbage. They're not going to convince Japan to cross over with that. If you're going to make a package, at least put games they'll actually care about in there!
Hearsay my ass. I worked for Future Shop (owned by Best Buy) and all we had was pirated software! We didn't even have OS disks. And diagnostic equipment? HA! We had one diagnostic software app that didn't work. We asked a few times for stuff but we never got it. I remember sitting in our room with the other techs dreaming about this RAM testing machine we heard this other company down the street had.
"Shit, wouldn't that be nice guys?"
"Damn straight."
But hey, we could install a cheap video card in 30 seconds flat!
...Microsoft will copy it. I mean, this is Microsoft we're talking about afterall. If there is one great thing you can say about them is that they do a really great job of copying other people's ideas.;)
The world is bigger than the so called 'console war'. Just because the PS3 is shipping with BR doesn't mean blu ray is guaranteed to magically overthrow the market and win the hearts of consumers across the globe. That thread of logic (which for some reason seems to be unfortunatly popular here) is seriously flawed.
I agree. I read that 84% claim and thought, "that's it?" When I was 15-19 I pirated games. Heck, I don't think I actually paid for a video game until after college when I got a real job and I could afford it!
After reading this I got up from my desk and walked into the IT office, looked at them and said, "Windows VISTA!!" with a decidely bad spanish accent. After hearing myself say it, I half expected an army of señoritas to bust through the door. Wierd...
*Turns around, looks at shelf containing 'the' original BASIC manual in all its hardcover glory.*
I dunno, it could be fun to get back to the basics! (no pun intended)

... to gaming on consoles in the first place was because I wouldn't have to upgrade every year! And now they want to switch it back? No thanks!

C'mon... this is MTV. Yeah they suck, but nobody should be acting surprised. It'll be a cold day in hell when MTV has Uematsu playing piano on stage.
