  1. Re:Lower Sperm Counts! on Bicycles As a Gateway To Government Control · · Score: 1

But why? Why do they wear them?

Seriously, I'm not trying to troll or offend here. I see bikes go past on my way to and from work, or even if i'm just out for a walk. These are local people, out on a bike ride. There is no race and as far as I can tell, no rush either. So why do they wear the look-at-my-labia (or testicles) bike pants? Trying to shave a second off the time it takes to go around the block twice? I really don't understand it because there is no way that my little neighbourhood has hundreds of competition-level cyclists who just happen to be in training year 'round.

To paraphrase something I once read (maybe even here?): Tights are not pants, if I wanted to be that intimately familiar with your crotch, I would at least buy you dinner first.

    Can someone please explain this?

And what about composers like this guy? He composes scores for musical productions (likely among other things). Should he be like Tommy Dorsey and go get his own Orchestra to perform these songs? Or maybe he should also hire an acting troupe and rent out space at a theatre (perhaps just buy his own?) so he can produce entire musicals at night while he writes the music all day?

The huge list of names at the back of your program when you go to the theatre aren't just there to make it look good. Hundreds of people are involved in putting together any single night's production. Same goes for TV or Movies - those names scrolling on the screen at the end of the show are called "credits" for a reason. Most of those people get paid (credit) for their efforts.

Guess where the money comes from? (hint: it's not from people who are copying the sheet music/audio recordings/scripts)

It's funny, our current PM's party had "Reform the Senate" as one of the planks in their platform in both of our last two elections. It hasn't gone anywhere though, and PM Harper has appointed 32 Conservative Senators since 2008! One interesting twist is that he got them all to agree to step down after a set term (I think it's 8 years but can't find a reference) before he gave them the appointments.

Of course, nobody's terribly impressed considering how loud he talks about reforming the Senate and how little has actually been done about it to date.

Doesn't Australia use the same Parliamentary system as the UK and Canada? If so, then you've never voted directly for a PM anyway, since you vote in your local member of a party and then the leader of the party who gets the majority of the seats is the new Prime Minister.

This is exactly how Canada got our first female PM, Kim Campbell. When Mulroney stepped down the party voted her in as their new leader. Since they had a majority in Parliament at the time, she became the new Prime Minister.

I don't even think it's required that Gillard call an election but it's usually what happens given that most people in the country generally don't understand how Parliament works and start saying things like "What? I didn't vote for her!"

There's nothing wrong with what's happened here. This is how it works in a "real" election too, except usually you know who the party leader is before you vote.

Earthquakes in Lake Ontario aren't rare, we get a couple dozen a year, just not big enough to feel them. This one was at least 3 or 4 times as long as the last one I felt, and I've heard of 2 or 3 since then that others felt but I didn't.

They go out and find something they think they want, and once it's in their head that bells, whistles and flying toasters are the goal, there isn't much one can do to stop them except fire them and go find the next client. (who will most likely do the same thing.)

The six-month flip to HTML is a great example of customers educating themselves and researching their market BEFORE they come and make ridiculous requests with no room for discussion to the Web developer. Of course this is what they should have done in the first place.

Unfortunately, even in 2010 customers don't want to educate themselves first. I wonder if that's a function of it not being 1998 anymore and they think they "know more about what they need" by virtue of "being online for 12 years", but actually nothing has changed and they still don't have a clue.

    Scratch that, I don't wonder - that's exactly what's happening.

Is it what the customers should want?

That is an interesting question, and one I've asked of my customer (and potential) customers quite often. One of my most often-repeated phrases is "Your Website isn't for you it's for your customers." Unfortunately, time and time again, most Website upgrades I've helped manage and develop (I don't design, and I don't know ActionScript/Flash, but my designers do) almost always are born on the boardroom table when Carbon-Based-Lifeform #1 says to CBL #2, "Their website is so much cooler/snappier/flashier/more popular than ours".

You've definitely hit the nail on the head, and if the goal of the site is to drive people to the "Buy Now" button, but has flying toasters, etc all over the site getting in their way then we've found ourselves in a classic case of feature-creep. The Oatmeal has a great one pager that illustrates this situation nicely. This happens all too often, regardless of contracts, plans, step-by-step processes, or what have you. You can plan the site 'til the cows come home but ultimately if the boss wants the flying toasters live on the site before you get paid, then it's flying toasters all around.

Then there are the sites that are there so the CEO/Principal/Boss can take to his buddy and brag about how great his site is. There truly is no other benefit to the project, their customers all come via word-of-mouth, and they have no Web traffic to speak of. They just want to be able to whip out the laptop at CEO Happy Hour and e-stroke for the guy beside him.

I refer to this as the Internet equivalent of buying the Maserati instead of the Mercedes.
