  1. On/Off propulsion on Rocket Racing League Flights With Armadillo Engine · · Score: 5, Interesting

I was up at the EAA Oshkosh fly-in, they had one of these rocket powered aircraft showing off for the crowd. The most impressive part of the entire thing was the sound.

First off he was at a decent altitude, there was about a 3 to 5 second delay between the engine turning off and the sound stopping. Even with that kind of distance the sound was Very loud, only close-in jets were louder. The sound of the rocket igniting was a standard "FOOM" kind of sound, and the running engine sound was also normal, but the sound the thing made when they shut off the engine was the weirdest I'd ever heard. It sounded like someone took some sound effects software and crossed the rocket sound with that of a balloon (when you stretch the opening to make that really high pitched, air-escaping, sound, then shut off/stop the air).

The sound of the engine shutting off caught your attention more then the sound of it turning on or the sound of it running.

One last note, there was no throttle on that plane, the choices were full on or full off, nothing inbetween.

If these rocket racing courses are set out with some low-speed areas where they have to shut the engine off in order to make the turns, I will definitely be paying to watch these races, if nothing else for the sound of these rockets shutting off.

I'd suggest using iTunes to reset your iPod. I have a 60gb 5g iPod and last time it crashed was... sometime last year actually. However it's had similar problems before, usually the solution is a refresh from iTunes, takes a while but you get a clean install of the OS out of it, and most likely what is going on is that some part of your iPod OS is corrupted.

I think he is refering to 'keying' the plug/socket, all those you reference are keyed plugs (RJ45 (ethernet), DVI, svideo, firewire, etc) are all keyed plugs where the key is visible and easy to distinguish, you don't have to be looking directly at one of those plugs to figure out where the key is, and usually you can see the keying for the socket.

USB decides to be keyed as well, but internally keyed (the key is the shape of the inside of the plug) so you are forced to put the USB logo on one side so people know which side's up. For those who have cables that don't have that label or sockets that are on their side, and you don't know which side is up, this becomes a problem.

I'm seeing people trying to explain that USB is not keyed, but then say it won't go in the wrong way, but that means it's keyed, so you contradict yourself.

Because USB IS KEYED, and it is keyed internally, it's an annoying spec, personally I like firewire better and try and use it more then USB, it's easier for me to see the keying.

And I have a 5 gallon tub of Lego's that I play with, many that are 20+ years old, sure the cornstarch-type stuff is "environmentally friendly" but since my Lego's will never see a landfill until they are totally deformed beyond usage I'm not too worried.

I agree with using the Python language for a different reason.

Python has a built-in interpreter so you can test out code pretty much as-you-type. It really makes things easy to figure out and learn when I can type something in, test it, type it in with a modification, test it, etc. until I get it the way I want it.

Once he gets the hang of it, you can steer him towards creating new functionality for Python using C (which much of Python relies on). That will allow him to transition from OO language (Python) to a Non-OO Language (C) and use them together.

Last update to PS3 brings Trophies, similar to Achievements I guess, but shinier. Games can have a mix of bronze, silver, and gold, and one platinum trophy.

Also, with the trophies is a "level" system that works out kinda like an RPG of game play, after x number of trophies you go up a level, with the next level needing even more trophies.

This just came out so not many games support this as of right now, but many are adding it in. By this time next year all games will require trophy support.

MS had a good idea with the achievements, but it's no longer a distinguishing feature.

Clinton's statements were made in the court of law, under oath, there are punishments in the law books about lying under oath. Both are lying, but only one has a direct legal punishment assigned to it. Clinton should have been impeached for lying under oath, neither can be trusted to tell the truth.
