at the time of writing that. That explains everything to me.
I am currently suffering from a bad cold, and it's screwing with my ability to think straight. So rather than risk damaging my real work in progress, I decided to tidy up some thoughts I've been kicking around for a while, and bolt together this essay. Which will, I hope, begin to highlight the problems I face in trying to write believable science fiction about space colonization. A couple of days, sweat and hot drinks and it will still be pretty possible again! I am damn sure.
PS: Btw that is the funniest NB I have read for a long time...

but it's too bad that Click2Run isn't in Ubuntu 7.04 for the sake of those wanting to (legally) play DVDs, use AVI files, etc.
They called it Click'N'Run last time I checked it. It was renamed? Doubt it...
FYI there is already a nice frontend for adding software - it is easy and straightforward to add proprietary codecs/drivers and opensource software. It has a popularity based star-rating as well as a short package description. One can search for a name match etc. So I havn't noticed the lack of C'N'R feature. Ubuntu 7.04 is a good choice for a desktop OS imo.
1) The right way of spamming the world: A top 100 cluster under Microsoft OS control gets a I.Love.U2 virus 2) An interactive assistant - Microsoft PaperClip - grows fast and takes the world under its control 3) Finally Vista runs at decent speed. Modest Min Sys Req - a cluster 4) The_Big_Bang_simulation.vbp
1) Americans: at least some money was spent on peaceful activities
2) Russians: understood that betting on US poorly-engineered tin cans not floating at all (shuttles) is not a good idea, as it hurts planned deliveries of spare parts to the station, Russia will continue with China to explore the space.
The US government seems liking the idea of nuking the shit out of this planet with Iran more than space exploration. I hope they do not seriously think of fleeding to Mars (with India) in order to avoid the effects of the nuclear winter.
Office suite is a killer app on any desktop platform. What about other companies (and what the hell - governments too!) who support and use open-source software get some money into the conquer of making OpenOffice better/usable? It is good PR for them and just good for all openoffice users. Well... is it too good to be true? The time for www.spreadopenoffice.org has come!

Hello everybody out there using OpenOffice -
I'm doing a (free) office suite (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like OOo) for 586(686) stones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in openoffice, as my suite resembles it somewhat (same layout of the GUI (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I've currently done numberscruncher and wordscruncher apps, and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them:-)
PS. Yes - it's free of any openoffice code, and it is fast, multi-threaded and not greedy to resources. It has descent charting too.
Nice article about nothing. Made me rewatch "Dead Poets Society" - the chart method of defining a good poet.
By definition (Joel hasn't given any btw), a good programmer better than a pile of bad programmers. What is the price of a good programmer?
Obviously, a show-me-the-money cynic is a bad programmer no matter how awesomely he/she codes. It would be damn difficult to fit them into "best working conditions" and recieve profit.
The Boss needs some good programmers who would readily exchange some of their profit for the "Best Working Conditions". A couple drinks on a ferry with the boss praising their virtues (see article's photo) - that would do the trick. And the blog - PR is important for business. Also tell them the bad example of smb who pissed off programmers. The famous "corporate spirit technique".
"My technique is the best. My style is much better, Don't you know who I am."
Yes, yes, Joel, your stock is rising. And then comes M$ and includes its free version of the smart project management software with the stupid name. Amen.
An ice lake - no big deal. If they found some terrorists or a totalitarian society...
On a more serious note. We still have problems with ISS on the Earth orbit! The only nation that would dare sending smb to Mars is China. They have pride to do it to write its page in the Space exploration history. The other option - a combined effort of Russia, USA and others - unreal at best.
In 7.6 bln years time frame there is a 99.9 probability of a massive object hitting Earth and melting the outermost solid shell.

First thing they did (apart from searching for the sample for an hour or two) marked it with a wide

It would be very interesting (at least for me) to read about the making of O3. The open source DTP solution is somewhat disputed these days.

And if this is fresh news, do people care of their internet security at all? Or just bad memory?

... let the astronauts out. NASA would not be able to keep them there, as they are trying to break windows and escape already.
