I had a similar argument with a teach in middle school when computers had both 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives. I was arguing that if the smaller disks held more data, then why not make 5.25" disks with the same technology to get even more storage space. His argument was simply that 3.5" was smaller than 5.25" and the point of the 3.5" disks was physical size as opposed to memory size.

He's been making approximately $500 a day from online poker, simply because there are so many people online who don't know what they're doing. Once I heard the numbers he was pulling in I couldn't believe he was working a 9-5 job in the first place!

Titanium is in fact NOT as strong as steel. Looking at the characteristics of both materials you can see that Ti has an Ultimate Tensile Strength on the order of 220 MPa (for non-alloys) while steels are on the order of 330 MPa (often higher in better grade steels). The "sexiness" of Ti comes into play with it's low density of about 4.5 g/cc (0.163 lb/in^3). This is why it is so valuable to the airline industry where weight is everything.

Ti is also a pain in the ass to work with because it does not dissipate heat really well so your cutting surface gets work hardened really quickly. This is why steel is also so popular; cause of its ease of machining.

That is NOT true. You can certainly have a robot that is not totally autonomous. I say totally because the FIRST control system is actually very powerful and can be programmed (via an onboard BASIC Stamp from Parallax Inc.) to do some very complex controls. And if you throw in the many sensors that come in the kit (gyros, limit switches, pots, etc.) you can add many non-human controlled elements to your machine. These things are definitely robots (if you've never seen them live, you should).

That's only as true as you want to believe it to be. Yes, the kit itself costs $5,000+ but you can get your unlimited parts (sheet metal, fasteners, etc.) from just about anywhere. Small Parts Inc. is it's own company, not a FIRST company, so they are not your only option when it comes to purchases. But aside from the basic kit you can build a reasonable machine for way less than $30,000. The last time I participated (3yrs. ago) me and 6 other high school students built our machine in a room the size of a small office with little to no access to a machine shop. We also didn't have money coming in from a huge corporation and still we had a working robot for the nationals. It's like anything else in the real world: there's always going to be people out there with more resources and you just have to deal with what you have. And even if you have next to nothing you can still have a good time and compete.
