I'm not exactly sure how you can judge the mentality of military members by the current regime. I would think experiencing the hardships of a meaningless war would actually give someone a better viewpoint when it comes to voting. It would seem to be a system that would regulate itself. Veterans would be more likely to vote for someone who only gets into conflict for a solely defensive reason rather than one for monetary gain.

This reminds me of Robert Heinlein's book, "Starship Troopers", not the horrendous movie of the same name. In their society, to gain the right to vote, one had to voluntarily serve in the armed services. The idea is that, those who choose to defend their nation/planet and put themselves in harms way, would use that vote in a much more reponsible way.

I had a problem like that after a kernel upgrade. I hade used automatix to install nvidia drivers for my video card. It installs a different version of the kernel with support for the drivers. After the kernel upgrade, I had to boot off the old kernel to get X to work. I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge could explain this better. The xorg.conf was no longer compatible with the new generic kernel since it called for the nvidia driver and not the X default nv driver.

The thing is, the US Military is made up of, get this, Americans. Hopefully, a large portion of them would either refuse or even defend the civilian population. I remember something about Katrina and the national guard refusing to help enforce the gun confiscation ordered by the local police.

Here's the thing though. The American military force is made up of... Americans. A lot of them feel the same way as the average citizen towards their government. Time will tell though. We can have something like another American revolution or a fascist dictatorship like Nazi Germany.

I alternate between a motorcycle and a bike to commute to work. A solid steady single red light is almost invisible to the average driver who is always looking for two red or white lights. People just completely zone out. When I brake on the motorcycle I flash my tail light 3-4 times before actually braking. That little blinking red LED tailight on my bike is the only thing that will get through the mindless zombie driver's thick skull and let him know I exist from a distance. They're meant to be annoying. I think a constant pattern or color changing jacket would work great. People would figure out which pattern and color combos work the best.
