  1. Terminal on Iain Banks: Extremely Ill With Cancer · · Score: 1

I do hope that he gets to enjoy an adequate amount of time with his family and friends.
His books have given me much enjoyment over the past 20 years. I thank him for that.

  2. Confusion, on Florida House Passes Bill To Ban "Internet Cafes" · · Score: 4, Insightful

What I don't get is why the USA is so uptight about "gambling"? If they were really serious about getting rid of big-time gambling operations, they really should ban the stock market and insurance.

Given that there are pedestrians (not in a vehicle) killed crossing streets by an automobile, seemingly every day, it isn't working.
By that logic, they should ban pedestrians from walking within 20ft of any road.

Some things are dangerous and should be left dangerous. Just educate that they carry risk and responsibility.

Actually, the story I've heard from fairly authoritative sources is that what Google wanted was the text "Google" on the Maps display so that people knew that the data was coming from Google.

Apple did not like that and it was a deal breaker for them.

  13. Why I still have Windows XP licenses. on Microsoft Urges Businesses To Get Off XP · · Score: 4, Insightful

XP Pro has more functionality than Windows 7. To get equivalent function for which I currently use, I would have to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate. The price tag for it is more than the cost of the machines that it would be running on.

It is simply too expensive for little-to-no gain in functionality.

Some individuals would probably be just fine drinking 2L of sugar soda from plastic bottles if they're active enough to burn off the extra calories.

We actually have the technology today to source almost all our needs for natural gas in environmentally sound ways. That there are crazy subsidies on continuing the status quo means that the environment loses.
