Look, for the last fragging time. I worked for best buy, store #323 in Chicago on North Avenue.
I will state, in a goddamn court if I have to, that not a single non managerial retail employee of bestbuy is on any sort of commission. If anyone has ANY =reliable= information to the contrary, I would like to hear it. Until then, put your money where your mouth is or shut up.
AS for Jareds411. I stopped working for best buy over 2 years ago, so I can't speak as to whether my store ever used winternals, but there was more than enough pirated software floating around. However, I can also attest that store #323 used a reformat whenever it was the easiest solution. It wasn't the fix that was always used but if it was going to take more than about an hour, the machine was reformated 90% of the time. Customers were charged $90 for up to 2 DVDs of their data to be backed up. Now to me, that sounds like a push for more really high margin back up costs. "Hey, ya, we have to erase everything, can we interest you in our overpriced backup service?" Scared Customer, about to lose all their data: "Um..yes..please! how much is it?!"

So maybe Jareds411 just happened to work in a slower store, but I can tell you, we were directly instructed by our area manager to do this every time it would take more than an hour. And being the busiest store in the country, we had a ton of times where this would happen every day. We reformated maybe 15 machines per day. Also note that they refused to let us even take the time to put back the customer's drivers. I can't count the number of times I had to write a little text file on the desktop, trying to write out to some poor guy how to get his sound working.
    The line was
"they don't pay enough to have us do all the driver work"
Then the same customer would come in the next day "the sound doesn't work!"
to which we would have to charge them for an hours worth of labor (it was a minimum) to install the drivers.

Oh, by the way, I thought I might say who was in charge of all this stupidity.
The General Manager for store #323 is currently (as of a month ago anyways) Kevin Dahm. He has his head in the sand.

This is entirely true. We were often told to "solve the problem however you can" by managers. Why? Because there pretty much =wasn't= a "geek squad" budget. It is treated as an extension of the PC/Home Office department and basically is used to placate customers who have had their machines screwed up at the service centers. We weren't technicians, we were negotiators. We HAD no budget. In fact, Store 323, North Avenue in Chicago uses pirated software for its diagnostics, on every machine that comes in. It is copied and distributed to the technicians, the other employees, their friends, ANYBODY. The passcode to get it to work, is, ironically "323". The "Geek Squad" agents have shitty jobs, utterly shitty. It wasn't "we're provding you with pirated software to do your job because we're cheap" it was "find your own pirated software to do your job because we're too cheap to buy any AND too lazy to even do the pirating"

Although excercise does, obviously, keep you in better health, the problem for most geeks is that it is so tedious and boring. A lot of the discussion here has been on how to make excercise more enjoyable for the (if you'll pardon the pun) overclocked mind of your average geek.

    Some suggestions.
    1. Read a book while you excercise on a stationary machine.
    2. Listen to an mp3 player (preferably in conjunction with #1)
    3. Some people describe excercise as a "mental vacation". Some geeks (including myself) don't want a mental vacation, we =like= our brains churning at full speed thank you very much. So take this time to look at some problems you're dealing with in your job, personal projects, personal life etc and reevaluate them from the beginning. You'll be suprised how often this can help solve whatever problem you're facing.
    4. This may seem horribly fundamental, but make sure you're breathing deeply. If you don't breathe properly, you're just going to be in a lot of pain and the whole experience will be miserable.

All my father would give me was the tech support number. So at the ripe old age of 8, I was calling tech support, learning to speak clearly and concisely describe problems, learning to curb frustration and work with the person on the other end of the phone to fix my problem (this is back in the day when tech support would stay on chatting with you about other problems, chat about tech, they were just general great guys) Computers made me love learning, they taught me a love of creation and of solving new problems with innovative ways, a desire to learn.

I see so many posts on this topic about not getting a kid a computer until they are in their teen years. That isn't a solution in my humble opinion. Start them young, but teach them! Be there with them! Don't turn something like a computer into a babysitter or another "magic box". Take them under the hood, show them how it all works. A computer is a tool, it is neither good nor bad, it depends on how it is presented, and whether or not it is described as a profound tool, or "it lets you chat online". Here's to hoping that there are more parents in the world like I see on this topic, people who really want their children to shine.

You completely misunderstood what the poster was referring to and went off on a sort of "You're an ignorant American" rant regarding "US Values" and the idea that Americans think that Europeans are all "Socialist Cheese-Eating Europeans".

Several things. First of all, look around in Europe, they have some of the most socialistically set up economies around, so that's a valid point. Also, the internet has nothing to do with values, or America, so please stop trying to turn this into an "Americans think they're so good, blah blah blah" argument. The simple fact is, it ain't broke, so stop tampering with it.
WE NEED DISTRIBUTED DNS. No government should have a control over DNS at all due to the threat of censorship. This especially applies to China, Governments with Religious Law sets (Sharia, et al) and other authoritarian regimes. My personal vote goes for Switzerland.
As for Europe, here's my issue. Just what have your countries contributed recently compared to the US? Not a threat, not an insult, just a simple question. I really do think you have it all wrong here. First of all you can still spank kids depending on the severity of the marks left (in almost all states) Second of all unless you really go off the deep end no one is going to charge you with psychological abuse. The Klutztown 13 aren't "defiant children", that conjures up 8 year olds who are running into the street when they are being told not to. They are teenagers with minds of their own who are probably never given an explanation for anything by the administrators. Think about this, they are rational human beings, so they expect rational reasoning for decisions. Now, if you remember high school, you probably remember that it was almost all bullshit. Or at least if you had gone recently you'd know that it has become entirely bs. You can simply use logic with teenagers, most of them WILL actually follow it give them a damn chance instead of just chalking it up to "defiance". Yes one needs to learn to respect authority, but one also needs to learn how to react when authority is acting like a bunch of special olympics finalists. Granted their actions were wrong, but what does it say about the admins that the children were able to spy on them without their noticing? I'll say this, the school system stores important documents, student information, teacher information, pay information; and unless the kids had proved these admins incompetent NO ONE WOULD HAVE. That's the way these school systems work, all the administrators and higher-ups protect each other in a strange polygarchy. These admins would NEVER have been exposed. Better now that Kutztown High has to learn how to secure the network that assuredly has valuable information on it. If we make examples out of these kids it will most assuredly NOT change the path for millions of other kids out there. Well, at least not the way you're thinking. It will instill in the kid's minds that adults are a group of heavy-handed assenine individuals that respond to questioning of their authroity with legal charges. Also, if you've noticed, most kids don't read or follow the news (a problem in itself), so in reality all one is doing is ruining the lives of 13 children. So in the end let's be logical with our teenagers (I'll admit that children can not often follow logic as well...heh) And not just expect them to blindly follow authority. As for your children, and I'm not making accusations here, how often do you lie? To them? To your spouse? To Authority figures? I'm not accusing you of it, just trying to show the point that children practice what they see. And it's not fair to say "well I don't lie now" but what about when they were growing up? When they were so young, you thought they didn't notice but they did. And of course I'm not saying that leading an exemplary life will lead to exemplary kids, just that it helps. Sir, the final line of your post sums up the reason why I find your line of reasoning unsuitable for anyone. "Respect, in general, should be restored as a key value in our culture and at the core of respect is fear of what might happen if you don't." If I recall correctly the quote went like this "Do not rule with force but with the fear of force" If you rule with fear, enjoy your sheep.
