You're correct, of course. But sometimes one gives up a little economy for the sake of velocity.
Also, I like the girl who works there in the mornings.;)
(Time and weather permitting, I prefer to take the bus instead of the Tvärbanan -- I can get better coffee even more cheaply at the other end, plus a nice walk over the Liljeholmsbron.)
Yes, and I bought a coffee lattè yesterday at Coffee By George at Gullmarsplan Station here in Stockholm, and the girl said, "That's 37 crowns, please". Just like virtually every other Swedish person I've met in 2+ years here says when speaking English (which virtually all Swedes do). So please come over here and tell them that they've all got it wrong.
...Windows still doesn't have multiple virtual desktops like Linux has had for decades. I've come to rely on that feature for day-to-day use, and using Windows is downright painful for me these days. Sure, there is software that can add that functionality to some extent in Windows (and Mac OSX, I presume) but that isn't the same as having it available out of the box...
Amen, brother.
In the 4+ years since I switched to Linux full-time, having multiple desktops has become absolutely essential to my workflow. Let me repeat that: Having multiple desktops has become absolutely essential to my workflow. There is simply no way that I can be anywhere nearly as efficient or productive on any Windows machine that lacks it. (Which is basically any Windows machine.)
I've tried various add-ons that provide this functionality for Windows, but none of them are as useful or reliable as what any of the Linux desktop environments have from the instant they're installed. And none of the non-gratis Windows add-ons have seemed worth spending money on, especially given that all Linux desktop environments have this as an integral feature, and it's gratis and libre in all of them.
I read the first 3 or 4 books thinking "This just has to start getting cool soon. It's got too much cool potential not to".
Silly me.
I think the only reason the later volumes even sold was because people didn't want to admit to themselves that they'd been persuaded to waste the time and money on the earlier ones.
What you're describing is just a variant on trolling. It's very blatant.
What I'm talking about is much more insidious. It's more akin to those who pretend to agree with you while pushing an opposing agenda, trying to make it look like you "really" agree with theirs.
People trying to pull that kind of crap on me are one of the few things that evoke a genuine desire in me to smash someone's face.
I've noticed an increasing number of posts moderated in this fashion -- that is, they offer perfectly valid insight and/or analysis and/or information, but are modded Funny.
I am beginning to suspect this is an attempt to belittle or discredit such posts on the sly, by trying to get others to see them as jokes rather than as something to be taken seriously.
Much less obvious than simply modding something as Troll.
I hope I'm wrong about this, because the thought that someone might be doing this in a systematic fashion makes me seriously want to wipe a knowing smirk from someone's face with a shovel.
I've never used Skype on anything BUT Linux, and the OSS version has _just worked_ for me without fail (on several different machines) since I followed a friend's suggestion that I use a USB headset.
I honestly fail to see where expressing the view that people ought to be held accountable for their actions equates to vigilantism.
So please don't try to tar me with that particular brush. (Check my posting history; I think you'll see I'm no fan of mob rule.)
In Lori Drew's case, I think she's already got her just desserts, since she's outed herself as a callous and manipulative bully to half the people on the planet. However, if it could be done in an appropriate legal way, I wouldn't shed any tears if they locked her up and threw away the key.
The issue here is not "oh, MS is getting screwed on a baseless patent", it's more "we need the patent system fixed (removed from software)" as this is another reminder.
I agree (and have always thought) that software ought to be covered by copyright rather than patents, and that this particular patent offers an example of why software patents are stupid and wrong.
However, you said earlier that
...there wasn't meta data at allin the 80's,...
Which is demonstrably false.
Your post also implied that all markup = XML, when in fact (as I pointed out above) that markup not only predates XML, it even predates electronic computing.
Arriving at the "right" confusion is not useful if it's based on invalid premises. It's sloppy thinking that, for mine, shows that you don't really understand why software patents are a bad idea.
If somebody screams "FIRE!" in a theater and causes a stampede, only the stampeders should be blamed for any injuries or deaths that occur. After all, they're the ones who panicked and caused the harm, rather than acting responsibly and leaving the theater in a civilized manner.
Anyone who believes this is unthinking at best.
I'm more inclined, however, to deem such a person "seriously fucking disturbed".
If you hang a noose in front of the house of a black person, and it hurts their feelings, should you be charged and go to prison?
I think a much better question is, "Why are you (and lots of others, apparently) so interested in getting away with being a mean-spirited shit to people most likely to suffer real emotional hurt from it under the guise of 'freedom of speech'?"
Whatever happened to the notion that others' feelings ought to matter to us as much as our own?
Religious beliefs should be irrelevant to government since they cannot issue a decree that affects the existence or otherwise of any god.
Having just re-read I, Claudius and Claudius the God, I couldn't help but chuckle a bit at this. I'm sure the Roman Senate could have benefited immensely from your sagacity.
You're correct, of course. But sometimes one gives up a little economy for the sake of velocity.

... Note also that the only Mono-using apps I've seen on Linux are aimed directly at GNOME, de Icaza's little "love child."
Yet another reason why I stick to KDE (or WindowMaker).

Tack för att du spelar!
Those of us who actually do use Swedish kronor couldn't care less what you Ausländer carry around in lieu of hard currency. ;)
According to Wikipedia, it's more like 25% of men and 15% of women. What studies provide figures that differ by that much?
You should give Belenix a spin. Pretty damned desktop-friendly for an alpha.
Bzzzzt. That was Grammarmofo #1.
It's smite - smote - smitten.
Nice way to totally miss the point (and the "or whatever").
Imagine a fork of Open Office...
Oh, you mean like this one?

Just a big honking Flash app. Took about a 3 minutes to load on my 18 Mbps connection.
Ran fine on FF/Linux, but I too stopped it once it asked what my bank accounts etc. added up to.

Perhaps, but I think not.

If you AHTFWFALLTROU* maybe you wouldn't have time to make up acronyms out of thin air and write in something resembling English instead. ;)

And if somebody throws you a left hook, you should let them. Better yet, make it really easy on them and just lean into it.
Just because the US turn the word "defence" into doublespeak doesn't mean that Australia shouldn't be able to defend itself if the need arises.

Not a good feature but we were still a free society as long as you were in the mob and not targeted by it.
This is spot-on.
Whoever modded this Troll ought to think really, really hard, and then be ashamed of himself.
