  1. Because it is a big deal, IMHO. on Vista Gets Official Release Dates · · Score: 4, Informative

I'm looking forward to DX10, lower CPU usage (because the UI is run on the GPU), the ability to prioritize I/O (no more 10 fps in games if you move big files around on your computer at the same time), SMB 2.0 (transfers should survive now if the network is disconnected for a moment), virtualized registry (programs run in their own little world = less fudging around with regedit to clean up broken stuff), improved windows APIs (this is mostly for us programmers), improved audio system (ability to mute/adjust sound per application instead), multitasking of GPUs, general bugfixes and improved stability. This was just off the top of my head.

A better question would be why some people (excluding mac & linux users :) are not looking forward to Vista? Aside from the DRM (which will be promptly cracked), that is.

The word "know" was poorly chosen, as we can never know the exact conditions that existed back then, but we already have a good model on how e.g. amino acids can spontaneously appear in the right environment. After the organic matter reaches a sufficient complexity, it starts to operate under the principles of evolution. Theories that life could have come from somewhere outside Earth have no bearing on this, as the same models apply to life from other planets as well.

Overly simplified? Yes. But good enough for the purposes of a slashdot post. :)

But there's a lot more to "the algorithm of life" than what Spore has to offer. From John Conway to Will Wright, you're not going to find 0.00001% of the algorithm in any one place.

While I agree that Spore is a simplified view on the "algorithm of life", I don't think one needs to exaggerate and start talking about that kind of percentages. Life isn't that complex in all honesty, and we already know how it came to be which surely accounts for more than 0.00001% of the "algorithm of life".

This is what the GP meant by 'enemy combatant'. Note the addition of 'unlawful', the GP and a lot of other people seem to mix them up.

There are scene releases for all steam games so they can't completely die off, and if Valve ever closes their service they'll probably put out one last update to steam that allows everyone to play without steam being logged in. I think that if Valve ever closes it's doors there will be bigger problems to worry about than how your going to get your old steam games to function. Also, how many of your old games work today? There's a lot of classic games from the nineties that just refuse to function with WinXP and/or newer hardware, and Vista will only break even more games. This could be solved with emulators/virtual machines, but they don't support hardware 3d acceleration AFAIK, so that's not an option yet.

Looks like me giving Microsoft the benefit of doubt has backfired, as I'm now looking forward to SuperFetch a lot less. I apologize for bashing you, I was the one being silly here.

  10. Re:SuperFetch uncool... on Samsung's Hybrid Hard Drive Exposed · · Score: 2, Informative

Preloading applications into memory is called caching. And suggesting that these preloaded applications would be swapped into the page file when they could simply be discarded and reloaded from the HDD when more RAM becomes available is silly. The act of swapping running programs and their data into the page file is a different thing altogether, and has nothing to do with SuperFetch. SuperFetch won't prestart the applications, only copy their data into RAM, and then if you happen to start the application in question the cached copy will be loaded instead of the HDD copy.

AFAIK, the flash is only used for caching small files and for faster booting, all the data will eventually be stored on the HDD. Also, they assumably use algorithms that check the flash for bad sectors and marks them unusable if they stop functioning. HDDs also use similar methods, but a flash drive will be able to die more gracefully, as there is no mechanical parts that can fail abruptly.

When I said "we", I meant all "serious" gamers, I don't really think casual gamers are gamers, and when people talk about games being an issue in switching, they do not mean casual games, because casual games are plentiful on Linux.
