You're making the assumption that the goal is to make the student population representative of the population of the state. The universities argue that diversity in the student population is necessary for developing a culture of tolerence and exposing students to different points of view. By that measure you'd probably want people from outside the U.S since since these individuals tend to have far more varied experiences and are less inflicted by 'american culture'.
Ma-ti won't be happy that you just slashdotted his site:

really? Microsoft seems to do it well enough. Just look at netscape. All it had to do was buy another browser and integrate it into the os... and boom! nescape is gone. I hate to say this, but, Google is not even close to challenging microsoft. Keep in mind: linux is a better OS for techies, MAC is a better OS for user-friendliness.... yet windows dominates. Why? Because they have the mindshare. Think about what a webplatform would entail. Would non-tech people even understand it? Big businesses would have to have their own servers (to ensure that the content is always availible). Obviously thats going to cause a ton of problems as well: "Oh shit I fogot to back up the server... now EVERYONE'S content is gone"... as opposed to "Oh shit I fogot to back up my computer, now all MY data is gone" (one kills the entire business the other only harms a small section of it).
I completely agree, infact one of the biggest problems in raising concern for this issue (in my belief) is that: because the public at-large doesn't understand what computers are, how they work... etc... they think than anytime the riaa has a lawsuit it means that the individual being sued is completly guilty (they don't think about things such as your children's best friend using your computer to download stuff...etc)
"Maybe I'll send my 10 year old intto Fry's to try to buy an R rated DVD and see what happens."
...and may i be the first to congratulate you on your brilliant parenting.
neither does this one (IMHO). the only time you're required a special monitor is for drm protected content (which by-the-way, you don't have to buy). If you think about it it's the same way w/ all kinds of drm... ie: portable music players only support certain formats, so if you want to play files (on a portable player_ from the itunes music store you HAVE to buy an ipod.
the same "piece of crap" that apple is switching to?
face it: microsoft may suck, but intel (and amd) has given a pretty nice performance/price ratio compared to apple hardware. Maybe it's cause the power pc wasn't manufactured in massive quantities? I don't know.
"Do that and you start denting the profits of the record companies who, in turn, stop financing the RIAA because they're not achieving anything."
Most likely they'll just blame the loss of sales on downloaded illegal music, and fund the riaa even MORE!
I have to say that I prefer microsoft desktop search (via the additional msn download) over GDS2 for the following reasons:
1. GDS has tons of bugs (ie. for some users it doesn't even index all of the files......look at the google desktop group for more info on this)
2. Google provides very little control (ie. there is no option to reindex the system, and it doesn't even tell you which files its currently indexing)
3. Clumsy interface, this is because they rely heavily on the browser (ie. when your serch results are presented you are not allowed to view the file/move the file/delete it/rename it... only open it). Microsft's plugs in well into the os.
4....there are plenty of more reasons but i'll stop now.
Because of this, I believe they can pull off better search capabilities (along with fast searching) in longhorn/vista.
depends, for example you wouldn't want the police to get all excited about false alarms and such......if you really want that feature though, I'm sure you could just insert the police phonenumber instead of your own (and ofcourse tell the department about it, so they know hwo to react)
What exactly are you trying to protect?
Your right to privacy in a public place?
That sounds kinda stupid seeing as how other passengers are constantly violating that 'right' anyways.
I agree that if they started installing cams in your house/other private property, then you'd have something to rant about. But it seems kinda silly to do so otherwise.
Example : Walmart is allowed to have cameras in it's property for security, why doesn't anyone wail about their right to privacy there?
In the same way I think the subway is owned by someone (most likely the govt) and the fact that they want to install cams on it, seems fine to me.
Also while it may not prevent suicide bombings, at the very least it can help us find those who plant bombs and leave the spot (also may act as a detterrent to those who are less faithfull to their cause).
I agree that privacy is important, but that doesn't mean its the only thing that is important.

What ads? I don't see any ads!
Did I mention that I have the adblock plugin for firefox installed?
"Especially since they have the minimalist interface which doesn't suck."
Last time I checked, Google used that interface... infact Yahoo copied it from them.
Hiroshima was a civilian city: filled with innocent children etc.... In the very same way New York was a civilian city. My point is, if we let the ends justify the means, we can end up doing tons of stuff we ought not do. The arab world sees the atrocities in palestine etc, and a feeling of desperation overcomes the people, and soon enough suicide bombing becomes rational because its a great tactical strategy. If I hear one more person ask me, "why do they do it", I think from now on i'll just point out hiroshima : because they're desperate to end strife that is occuring in their part of the world.
what does dell have to lose? they can just maintain a premuim brand, and if in the future everyone switches to linux: just bundle that in isntead of windows (making software cheap and hardware more profitable).
In my view you're kinda right, except IMHO I would argue that if there is a demand people will supply it. Meaning that these games only exist BECAUSE the market demands games like this. Meaning it's a social problem that society wishes to consume such items. Therefore: yes it is a problem that the primary entertainment is a game centered around crime, but it has nothing to do with the corporations who make these games instead the people who consume them
"yes? No? You mean tolerance and diversity don't work the other way around?"
Yes. Tolerence and diversity work the other way around.

IE was alot better then netscape at the time (it didn't take soo bloody long to load) plus it was free.

Mr. Lee is actually a MS spy, this is all a ploy.
Ok maybe that's not true.... I agree with the parent post....
